With the string of security fixes that have cropped up in the last few days,
I'm getting off my lazy $$ and patching the hell out of my two servers.
When I tried to apply today's libc patch to my 2.9 box, though, make didn't
work, prompting me to think about the technicalities of patching older
    systems with the newest work.

Really, should I be patching a 2.9 machine with 3.1+ patches? I've been
meaning to upgrade, but the last time I did so, the whole system was
completely hosed, so I'm a bit loth to repeat the process. (On a related
note, is the Upgrade option from the CD a great deal different than
upgrading via a source rebuild?) I'd really hate to break my system while
    trying to fix it.

    Thanks,
    Alex Kirk
