For an end user, to learn the basic mobility and operation, this book is
great. It's short and to the point for logging in and using a shell to do
some basic stuff.
"Learning the Unix Operating System"
1565923901
(O'Reilly books - they've done a remarkable job on tech books)

If you need to install a UNIX operating system for the first time?
That's a bit more difficult to pin down.
If you can boot from a CDROM with fairly brand name, working, hardware I'd
look into buying RedHat Linux (INSERT flame war here), or getting the
OpenBSD CD's from the openbsd.org site.
Boot and try, boot and try, learn. Remember that reinstalling is okay as
long as no data really needs to be saved on the computer.
If you choose to use OpenBSD (not a bad choice, but be prepared to learn
on your own much of the time)
READ THE OPENBSD FAQ.
http://www.openbsd.org/faq/
It is *very* exceptionally well done. All of OpenBSD is well done and
documented.
Learning UNIX is great. You'll come to love it if you wish to learn and
be able to make your computer do what _you_ want it to.
