Googling this a little bit more thoroughly, it seems a lot of people are
having trouble with 5.8's PerlIO. I guess that should have been expected
on my part; supposedly rolling it back to 5.6.1 helps for everyone (at
least with the messages I've found). I'll post this to a perl mailing
list in the next few days, but I'm going to wait to see if maybe I get
a reply here with a little more information that I would be able to post
    along with it.

    Some references:
    http://www.mit.edu:8008/bloom-picayune.mit.edu/perl/21973
    perl.org/msg77627.html">http://archive.develooper.com/perl5-portersperl.org/msg77627.html
    k242.linux.bogus">http://mathforum.org/epigone/modperl/glongsnaysimp/m3u1nsvfes.fsfk242.linux.bogus

I'm sure there's plenty more problems posted with PerlIO out there, but
I'm lazy and I don't need to search them _all_ out. I'm guessing there's
not really anything that can be done until Perl gets it all together; if
possible, though, I'd appreciate a pointer as to what maybe I should be
investigating now, before I make a jack-ass out of myself on yet another
    list.

    Sanks.

    k.
