If I have The apache1 and install the PHP4 binary, apache is already
configured to work with php and cgi pages?

Apache2 + PHP is not a supported combination under any operating system
that I'm aware of, due to thread-safety issues with third-party libraries.

Try Apache1 in the base install + the php4 binary package.
