one of those posts you probably saw was mine (tyan S2469).

don't disable LTP int the bios - leave the default

oddly enough, my issue was solved by disabling fd* in UKC when
booting off any of the floppies/bsd.rd...once installed, GENERIC
boots fine.

obviously, due to the odd solutions, milage may vary ;)
