Ahh OK, so that changes the scenario a bit. I thought there would be
no speed difference on any arch.

I guess the whole issue is flamebait here because whenever someone
comments about stripping down a kernel some other people start
thinking about this too just for the added (and _very_ subjective)
"cool factor". Perhaps the developers are worried about the snowball
effect of this. More people comment on it -> more unskilled people try
it -> more useless bug reports.
