I'm certainly not the final authority on this, but testing the packages right
now tests 1) the programs themselves, 2) the way they are packaged.
Testing a port means you're exercising both. If you have the spare CPU
you can get into the package building business yourself for testing, but
that can be a multi-day event. Especially now, test the packages, to help
ensure they are robust for the upcoming release.
