I had similar problems under 3.5 stable.

I have never had this problem actually.

This can be easily fixed by checking the NetBSD driver, although I am not
sure if
this is a /* correct */ fix.

http://cvsweb.netbsd.org/bsdweb.cgi/src/sys/dev/pci/emuxki.c.diff?r1=1.9&r2=1.9.10.1&f=h

Not being technical, I simply went to the file /usr/src/sys/dev/pci and
edited emuxki.c
and that seems to have fixed the problem for now. When the system boots, the
volume
is maxed at 255,255 but you can easily set it by mixerctl and/or audioctl.
Aumix works allright for me.

as u can see, just change 4 -> 2

I think xmms 1.2.7 has some problems.
eg) XMMS would play songs ok for like 2 min or so but crashes all of sudden.
This does not happen with XMMS packaged for 3.6 BETA.

You can try using gqmpeg or mplayer or mpg123 or mpg321.

Cheers,

TK
