Serving Documents, Aliased directories, symlinks

Hello all,

I am trying to sort out the manner in which the virtual server accounts
I have elsewhere map /home/myacct to /var/www/htdocs/myacct

I can access my pages and images like this right now:
http://123.123.12.123/myacct/

but I would have to FTP as root to add files without mv'ing them all.

So I symlink from /var/www/htdocs/myacct to /home/myacct

But that did not work the way I hoped.

I also tried

UserDir public_html

And

Alias /home/myacct/public_html "/var/www/htdocs/myacct/"
<Directory "/var/www/htdocs/myacct">
    Options Indexes MultiViews
    AllowOverride None
    Order allow,deny
    Allow from all
</Directory>

To no avail.

Do I need to define v hosts for this to work? Oddly (to me) it does not
matter whether I store .profile in /var/www/htdocs/myacct or
/home/myacct.
It gets found either way.

Thanks for any advice.

DAvid
