If I boot machine with monitor etc and without starting X then I start
videod. then there is only the occassional message.
"$ videod: fopen: No such file or directory"
but the jpg image is just noise ( and different noise picture every few
seconds )
If I start X and then ssh into machine and type
videod -p dev1 -f /home/mick/cam/video &
then picture is good.

It would be nice not to start X if it is not truly needed
