Signal strength measurement with wi and 1.8.0 Prism2.5 firmware

I've got a couple of machines with Prism 2.5 based wireless cards on
OpenBSD 3.6. The cards were delivered with version 1.4.9 of the
firmware, which seemed a bit old and had some known problems. I
recently upgraded the cards to 1.8.0 since that seemed to be the latest
version people were talking about, but the wi driver (or wicontrol)
doesn't report sensible numbers for signal strength any more.
With the original firmware wicontrol reported numbers like:
Comms quality/signal/noise: [ 78 140 7 ]
and now it reports the same thing all the time:
Comms quality/signal/noise: [ 0 81 27 ]
There is a link established, so it's safe to say that the signal quality
must be something better than zero...
Has anyone else seen this kind of behaviour with different firmware?
It's not essential, but it's handy to have an idea of how good the
signal is when setting up an antenna.
