Perhaps I am not understanding your situation fully, but from the way
you are describing it, your desktop has a private ip address, and your
laptop has a public one, which would explain why you can't ping the
desktop, you need to either alias your main NIC (if it's on the same
physical wiring) or setup another interface. That is, if I'm
understanding you correctly.
