This is standard mysql port behaviour. Some other ports, www/php4 for
instance, can be configured to rely on mysql-client. That does not in
itself mean you'd need to end up with mysql-server installed aswell.
It's a breeze to install if you need it, as you've seen.

AFAIK, you followed the right procedure.
