3.9 amd64 using one core

Hi,

I've installed 3.9 from CD on an AMD64X2 dual core machine. When booting
bsd.mp the system seems to only see one core (no CPU1 shows up)

I've only installed the OS and haven't done anything with the other two
hard disks (to be mirrored when running)

(as an aside, when I tried bsd.mp from 3.8, the machine whined loudly
with a lot of IDE timeouts and would lock up during bootup soon after
the message about the second core popped up. I could transcribe by hand
if anyone wants)

I've googled but nothing of relevance seems to show up.
Any ideas?
