This doesn't answer my question. What I was curious about was not
whether the code was in fact like that at some point (I'm sure it
was), I'm wondering about the reasoning behind the old version. Was it
intentional or was it (in particular, that comment) just a holdover
from the original code OpenBSD was forked from?
