Originally it's a lower case Greek letter mu. This tends to run
into character set issues. I approve of "mu-law".

ITU-T G.711, which defines these encodings, uses "A-law" and "µ-law"
(lower case mu). I'm holding a paper copy in my hand as I'm writing
this.
