The kernel used in OpenBSD is, unsurprisingly, the OpenBSD kernel,
which is developed and maintained as a part of the complete operating
system.

If I remember correctly, Banyan Vines was a proprietary, supposedly
UNIX-based system that had a loyal following in the eighties and early
nineties before sinking without much of a trace. There is no reason
to believe that any code from there was ever included in OpenBSD, but
to the degree that the systems share a common UNIX heritage, there may
well be similarities. Never used the system enough myself to have any
useful memories.

The most useful way to find out about OpenBSD is to point your browser
at http://www.openbsd.org/ and follow the links to the various parts
of the site and other resources such as mailling list archives. For
news sites, you mention DaemonNews, which in all honesty does not seem
to be too active. If OpenBSD is the main interest, the OpenBSD
Journal at http://undeadly.org is a much better choice.
