This didn't seem to go through; I sent it last night.

Most people are unable to write because they are unable to think, and they are unable to think because they congenitally lack the equipment to do so, just as they congenitally lack the equipment to fly over the moon. -- H.L. Mencken

I guess I gave up and asked for help too soon again. The problem lies in the '--enable-libdebug' flag. I don't understand why it happens with '--enable-static-libpam' (although I have some suspicions), but the problem without was, in fact, because 'libpam.so' did not exist--only 'libpamd.so' (it took a bit to notice that).
Attached is a patch to change the -lpam to -lpamd when built with libdebug. I'm still looking at the problem when building with stats-libpam.
