    Hi,

can somebody explain what does this error message means:

Thu Jan 23 17:33:39 2003: [24416] pam_pass: pam_authenticate: User not known to the underlying authentication module
    Thu Jan 23 17:33:39 2003: [24416] unix_pass: pam_pass for "RADTEST" failed

    background:
I'was trying to setup a radius server on linux.
the system is redhat 7.2 , radiusd-2.1.va from
livingston that I compiled from the source rpm with
    default options.

    # /usr/sbin/radiusd -v
    /usr/sbin/radiusd: Livingston RADIUS 2.1.va.1 2001/7/5 NDBM NOSHADOW flat_users

the server then started with the following options:
    #/usr/sbin/radiusd -x -b -f /etc/raddb/radius.sdw

the intention is to specify -f , to use alternative shadow password files.

while this setup works fine on redhat 6.2 , for redhat 7.2i or redhat 8
I got the following error from log

Thu Jan 23 17:33:39 2003: [24416] pam_pass: pam_authenticate: User not known to thed underlying authentication module
    Thu Jan 23 17:33:39 2003: [24416] unix_pass: pam_pass for "RADTEST" failed

    some observations:
    1. checked /etc/pam.d/radiusd , they are the same as redhata 6.2
    2. if I have the user in the regular /etc/shadow file, the authtication for "RADTEST" works fine
