The file would have to have a .php3 extension to be able to execute PHP
scripts (But, that said... A .php3 is just HTML... And can be edited as
such)
>So, I'd really prefer to have the code written on a different file, and

To be able to include the script in the helpers.php3 file (Formerly
helpers.html), use the following:
<script language="php">
include("/php3/helper_day.php3");
</script>
PHP will parse the script tag like its very own tags, and DreamWeaver
(Whichever version) won't shred them.
Alternatively, do the include at the top, and call the function inside
helper_day.php3 (May need a rewrite)
So, you would need to do:
<script language="php">
fetchDay(6);
</script>
For saturday, if your function was called fetchDay...

There were some earlier conversations about DW on this list. As I recall:
- One person had DW set up to use PHP macros or functions or something.
- DW3 supposedly supports PHP, if so then get the designer to upgrade.
- You might try using ASP-style tags <% echo $foo %>
- or script-style tags, <script>echo $foo</script> - I'm not sure of the
exact incantation so you'll have to look it up.
Gary B
attached mail follows:
Joao,
If you look through the archives there is something called PHPweave so you can easiliy use PHP in DW. Also i've been told that if you use ASP <% %> tags DW handles it just fine (there is a setting to turn this on in your php.ini)

Hi!
I'm fairly new to this and although I know how to write code, I'm still not
pretty sure about the way .html's and .php3's are treated by the web server.
Therefore, let me first explain what I mean:
Say I have a file named helpers.html, which contains (actually much more
than!) the code below. I want to execute one external .php3 file named
"/php3/helper_day.php3" ONLY inside a particular cell of the table. The
reason why I want to do this and not having a single file named helpers.php3
displaying both html and php3 built in, is because this file is constantly
being "edited" by a web graphics artist which does not have a clue about
php3, but masters for instance, DreamWeaver. The php3 code gets all mixed up
by DreamWeaver making it unusable, and I have to keep tidying it up,
everytime the graphics artist adds an icon or changes a bit the layout.
So, I'd really prefer to have the code written on a different file, and
somehow executed only when required!
Below is a description of where I would require the code to be "called"
from, marked in comments with ***!
--- File: helpers.html ---
<html>
<head>
<meta http-equiv="Content-Language" content="pt-br">
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=windows-1252">
<meta name="GENERATOR" content="Microsoft FrontPage 4.0">
<meta name="ProgId" content="FrontPage.Editor.Document">

<td width="80%">
<!-- *** Code to fetch Saturday - for example
/php3/helper_day.php3?day=6 -->
</td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td width="20%">Sunday</td>
<td width="80%">
<!-- *** Code to fetch Sunday - for example

Any kind help?
Thanks,
Miguel

I have Core PHP Programming as well...
Just picked up PHP Programming for Professionals which is published by WROX
and MySQL which is published by NEW Riders.
PHP Programming for Professionals is excellent from my newbian prospective.
It uses clear language with understandable examples. I am 180 pages into it
and going strong. I am really begining to understand what the heck I am
doing in PHP and what I have done...arg!
MySQL has gotten great reviews everywhere I have looked (Amazon, PHP Classes
Repository - Reviews)
http://phpclasses.upperdesign.com/products.html
-though I haven't started into MySQL yet.
Both books are $50 in the book stores - you may find them for less on the
web. So far, it has been money well spent.
Hope this helps,
Kevin

For PHP, I like Professional PHP Programming, Wrox Press, ISBN
1-861002-96-3.
Seems well-written, especially for a newbie (me), though I'm only through
1/4 of
the book. Also, they're using a combination of PHP, Apache and MySQL
throughout
the book, which is the same setup I'm using.
For MySQL (newbie here too), I too have the O'Reilly book which I like
(other
than the book's spine falling apart after too short a time). Another one
I've
been fingering but haven't bought yet is MySQL, by Paul Dubois, just out in
the
past month or two. The author is one of the writers of the MySQL manual,
and a
few minutes browsing through it gave me a very good impression. It too
delves
into
PHP, Apache, etc.
Lotsa luck,
Curt

On this note.. I've made it through the important mysql chapters in the mysql 'ora book.. can anyone recommend a good database design/modeling book?

The MySQL.com site recommends a couple in their FAQ. It's more germane to them than to PHP.
I picked up one of them and it seems pretty good: _The Practical SQL Handbook_. Not a gradulate-level textbook, not a Dummies book, but more concept-oriented than the Mysql/Msql O'Reilly. Explains normalization and such right off and goes from there.

There is a new MySQL book by Paul DuBois. I wrote a review for this and other books of interest for PHP users here:

Hi,
I newbie of php and mysql. I want to add the users to access the database. Do I need to create an user table? I new that in mysql there is user() table . Thus, I inserted the values into that table, it stated database.user doesn't exist.
I knew that you are doing password and encryption so that you might give me some ideas to start.
Thanks in advance,

I went to that URL and there was no mention of database searches. I did a search for 'intermedia search' and got no results. Do you know of any sites that use Intermedia for searching DB fields? What other products do you know of?

Inside the print_page_ar.inc file, in the first reference to one of the variables that uses the check_day() function, a closing } wasn't there.

Subject: [PHP3] redeclare a function
I have a few functions defined in the main script, ar.php3. One is print_page() which does an include(print_page_ar.inc);. Inside print_page_ar.inc, I have some forms...the text ones work fine, but when it gets to parsing the checkboxes, I get an error saying I can't redeclare an already declared function.
So I searched php.net and found the same error in the mailing list archives. So I tried renaming the function that is giving the problem, check_day(). But this didn't work.
When ar.php3 is loaded, it first defines some functions (the two above and a few others), and then has two logic tests: if(!$submit) and if($submit). When I commented out the functions in problem (check_day() and check_season()...both of which are 'related' to checkboxes in print_page_ar.inc) it seems to be going through a loop and displaying the page numerous times (nested tables).
There aren't any loops of any kind any where that could be making it do this over and over. I have some other scripts that work in the same fashion (a print_page.inc file is called from within a function, the function is called from within if(!$submit)...the print_page.inc file generates the forms/variables) and they work just fine, but this one doesn't seem to want to work like the others.
Thanks,

Hm. I got me one o' those. Qube2.
From /, as root/admin: find . -depth -name "php3.ini" -print ./etc/httpd/conf/php3.ini
I got my php3/apache from cobalt, precompiled, as rpm's... you might have only the apache rpm for MIPS (or whichever cobalt product you have), and need to get the php3 rpm's.

Do you have any info of the exact page fault.. Where it is occuring? This could be todo with doddgy HTML, make sure all your html is upto w3 standards and is not ambigious as this can cause problems, also is this just happening on one script with one computer or on lots any time you run it, is the bug reproducable, maybe you can give us a URL where is script is running? The problem is it could be one of many things so its hard to give you an answer.. One final thing clear your cookies if its on one comp only and start again as they could be corrupted, this is unlikly if it is happening on a wide range of computers though

Hi Doug,
Sorry to say but I am fairly sure to say that PHP3 is not the source of your problem. PHP is only running on the server side and is parsing plain HTML Code. I think the error should be in searched in that direction. Do have use Javascript or CSS code on the page??
Kind Regards,
Jerry

Doug,
Is this a PHP problem? Or just a problem with your HTML output? Try saving the output and open it on another PC with IE5 and see if you can recreate the problem.
The thing that will catch you is using unclosed tags like large tables which dont have </TD> and </TR>'s or bad Javascript.

Hi,
Has anyone experienced problem with IE5 when running PHP3 scripts?
The problem is the IE5 page faults occasionally when running PHP3. Doesn't happen on IE4. Doesn't happen all the time. Does happen while displaying html generated from a particular script. Nothing has to be actually executing (i.e. you don't have to be pressing a button or anything). It can happen as I merely move the mouse pointer across the window.
Any clues? This is irritating a lot of my users and I don't know what to tell them at this point.
Thanks in advance for any help,
Doug

There isn't much to this book. It is just a quick reference with a couple of introductory chapters and a few examples scattered throughout. However, it is small, cheap and portable and good for people who like to have a small hardcopy reference.
And yes, I'll do one for PHP 4 sometime after PHP 4 is released.

This is probably also duplicated in the latest edition of the "Webmaster in a Nutshell" book. This book collects the reference chapters of their books on HTML, Javascript, Apache, Perl, and others; I've found the first edition invaluable. The latest edition claims to add CSS and PHP.

I too am trying to return helpful diagnostics to upload users. I have 50MB limit in the php.ini file and in the HTML upload form set MAX_FILE_SIZE to how much disk quota they have left to prevent them from exceeding quota. If they upload a file which is larger than this size, PHP sets the temporary filename to 'none'. But there are a number of conditions which can cause this:
if ((loc - ptr - 4) > PG(upload_max_filesize)) { php_error(E_WARNING, "Max file size of %ld bytes exceeded - file [%s] not saved", PG(upload_max_filesize),namebuf); bytes=0; SET_VAR_STRING(namebuf, estrdup("none")); } else if (max_file_size && ((loc - ptr - 4) > max_file_size)) { php_error(E_WARNING, "Max file size exceeded - file [%s] not saved", namebuf); bytes = 0; SET_VAR_STRING(namebuf, estrdup("none")); } else if ((loc - ptr - 4) <= 0) { bytes = 0; SET_VAR_STRING(namebuf, estrdup("none"));
you can see the message emitted if you enable all warnings to be displayed in php.ini
; error_reporting is a bit-field. Add each number up to get ; desired error reporting level. DEFAULT=7 ; 1 = Normal errors ; 2 = Normal warnings ; 4 = Parser errors ; 8 = Notices - warnings you can ignore, but sometimes imply a ; bug (e.g., using an uninitialized variable) error_reporting=15
and you can get the text of that error message in php.ini with:
track_errors=On ; Store the last error/warning message ; in $php_errormsg (boolean)
but it's kinda harsh on the user:
Warning: Max file size exceeded - file [UserFile] not saved in [no active file] on line 0
I've had to fall back on a generic message like "Upload failed, you probably exceeded your quota". Ick, sounds like something unhelpful that WinDoze would say. :-(
PS: Is there any way to tell the *browser* not to upload files bigger than some form-specified value so they don't waste time uploading a 40MB file only to find out their remaining quota only permitted 39MB?

The only hints i can give you so far is look at something called jGantt (try www.gamelan.com) which is a fantastic Java app for displaying Gantt charts. How do you make a function in a class private? Seems like all functions in a Class are public. I have a lot of functions, but only a few that should be "public" and the rest are just supporting functions for these "public" functions. I want to minimize confusion for someone using my class so they know that they only have to look at these few functions to do anything they want.
The only thing I can think of is to put function B inside the public function A, but then I can not use function B inside Public function E without retyping it. I could also use includes, but I wanted to keep the number of files down to one.
Greg

I don't think there is the public/private concept in PHP's implementation. I use a nameing scheme to get around it. All private functions are given a leading _. Example --
class xyz { function foo { ... } function _bar { ... } }
This way the programmer knows that the leading _ functions are private and thus off limits. Not the best situation, but workable.

There is no public/private function system in php, in fact, your next suggestion: > The only thing I can think of is to put function B inside the public > function A, but then I can not use function B inside Public function E > without retyping it. I could also use includes, but I wanted to keep the > number of files down to one.
won't work either... defining functions inside functions defines them globally. There is no name spacing for functions other than defining a function inside a class. So if you define a function inside function A, it will also be available to function E. The problem is that if you call function A for a second time, you will get an error 'can't redeclare alreadey declared function'. So it won't work anyway. Your best option is probably to document your class carefully and as somebody else suggested maybe adopt a naming scheme for public/private functions.

PHP is not an OOP language; it simply borrows a couple of OOP keywords and concepts. 'private' is not one of them :).
One way to tell the users that these functions don't need to be used outside the class is to put a big honkin' banner comment above and below the 'private' and 'public' functions, explaining it.
Another way could be to use a prefix of some sort on the 'private' functions; for instance $this->__getattr().

Hi Mårten,
If you mean how much memory a script can use, look in your php[3].ini, for the line:
memory_limit = 8388608 ; Maximum amount of memory a script may consume (8MB)
and modify it to your needs. by default i believe the php[3].ini goes to /usr/local/lib. and that is if you are running unix of some sort. in windows i have no idea. good luck.

Hi Thomas,
Both php3 and php4 (on NT) has the same mssql_* functions to connect to MS SQL Server 6.5 or 7.0. Both versions are basicaly running the same code and the systems are stable. Php4 is changing rapidly at the moment so the current cvs version might not be stable. Remember that php3 only runs as a cgi and therefore persistant connections are not supported even though the function is in the module.

It won't matter what web server you run - the behaviour you're seeing is expected simply due to the nature of a http request. The cookie is sent back to the browser in the headers when the final page is sent back, not earlier. The http connection is stateless - there's no continually open socket that you can constantly read data from, and send data back down. The client makes the request, the webserver fulfills it, and the connection is closed.
I don't understand why you need to read the cookie further down in the same script that you set it anyway, because you already have whatever value you stuffed into the cookie, and can thus get that value later on in the same script in the same way you got it when you put it into the setcookie() function.
$variable = "value"; setcookie("mycookie", $variable);
/* instead of trying to check for cookie further down, just use $variable */
echo "See, I don't need to read the cookie at all, I already have it's value right here, it's: ". $variable. "<br>\n";

PHP knows nothing about the browser; it sends only HTML to the browser. This problem is entirely due to differences in the browsers. You didn't say what browsers/versions you were using, but Internet Explorer tends to be faster at page rendering than Netscape - particularly if the page contains lots of tables.
As far as platform differences go, perhaps you're trying to compare a fast Mac system with a slower/memory-constrained/busier NT machine?
Once again, this has nothing to do with PHP or MySQL.

Browser code between OS's tends to be different, which shows up more often when using anything dynamically rendered/processed. Such as Javascript or Java, flash (or any other plugins), etc. I've noticed IE users tend to whine about page loads more often than NN users, but like the redraws. NN users like how fast the page draws, but complain about load times... it's two sides of the same coin.
looking at your page, (which loads pleasantly under NN 4.7 on RH6.1), you might want to do a few things: 1.Actually time the load/draw. IE and NN handle loads/draws differently on different platforms, so time from empty cache to completely drawn page. 2. Compare the hardware/running services between platforms. Is the NT box just a client, or is it running server software in the background? Are you comparing a fast 400Mhz G4 to a dog-slow 333Mhz PII? SCSI caching to IDE caching? 3. Strip out the javascripts, to see if that's slowing the Wintel browsers down. 4. Look for any platform specific coding habits...ColorSync on the images? Are you shoving out Quicktime on page loads? 5. Maybe windows is cranky about the frequency of the word "navigator" on the page. :-) 6. Try a different browser on NT/95/98, like opera, to see if it's -all- browsers, or just the two biggies. 7. Check for other TCP/IP services speeds on the machines... are ftp speeds equal?

I found some Mac specific sites (such as www.iconfactory.com) to do similar things. I think it comes down to really horrible use of tables for layout.. but this is a guess.

Then everything should be fine... YMMV

yes, just creat a file containing all the password-user informations in /user/local/etc and in the main document: <? inlcude("/user/local/etc/file") ?>
The user which is run by the web server should have read privileges on this file.

Make sure you have one, and only one, php3.ini file on your hard drive.
Then move it from Windows to next to php.exe to various random locations until phpinfo() shows what it should from the php3.ini file.
You did uncomment the php3mysql.dll in the php3.ini file, right?
PS The idea that PWS will work better than Apache is ludicrous, imho. IIS, maybe...
Perhaps if you checked an Apache mailing list (or even here) with your specific troubles, you'd have it fixed.

Hi,
I have *lots* of pages each with a help button that at the moment is a link to nowhere. What I want to do is for PHP to say "ok wherever you find help.gif, add a <a href="link.htm"> tag to it".
Otherwise I am going to have to edit each and every page (lots!) to change the code. Surely I can add some code in an include file somehow?
Any help appreciated.

Step through your files and do this: $input = "This is some text, help.gif and another help.gif oh yeah"; $input2 = str_replace("help.gif", '<a href="help.html"><IMG SRC="help.gif"></A>', $input); print $input2;
or if you already have the images then: $input = 'This is some text, <img src="help.gif"> and another <img src="help.gif"> oh yeah'; $input2 = str_replace('<img src="help.gif">', '<a href="help.html"><img src="help.gif"></a>', $input); print $input2;

Is your JavaScript all cut&paste, or did you ever write new functionality?
If you can write new functionality in JavaScript, you should have no problem with PHP. In many ways, PHP is less complex than JavaScript.
Even if you've only debugged other people's JavaScript, you'll probably be okay.
ColdFusion would be fine, until the boss wants something ColdFusion doesn't do easily, and then you'll be smashed into a brick wall.

What I do is use " ...LIMIT $start, 6"
Then I show up to 5 entries, and check if the 6th one is there or not. If not, there should be no "next" button. IE
list($id, $name) =
mysql_fetch_row($result, 6);
if (isset($id) && $id){
echo "<A HREF=whatever.php?", $start + 5, ">Next</A>";
}
The test for "prev" is easier. If (($start - 5) < 0), then there is no "prev" button.

Please turn of html-enabled email.
In PHP3, you need to get an intermediary temp object to access. $temp = $myobj->subobject[$iter]; echo $temp->id; Note that PHP3 does "copy on assignment" so you are really getting a *COPY* of the object.
In PHP4, it should just work, I think.

The file is actually called '.my.cnf'; if you saw '.m.cnf' on the web site, could you tell us exactly what page, so we can fix it?
The file doesn't get created when you install MySQL - since MySQL can run without it (using the default values). You have to make it from scratch.
Look in the manual at the ``Option files'' section. MySQL looks for an option file in several different places, and it depends on your system where they are. The manual describes this in detail. It also gives some examples of what you can put into the option file, and how to do that.
Each user can have a private option file - this is what you want. On Unix, it is called .my.cnf and you put it into the user's home directory. You might want the option file to contain:
[client] password=th3p4$$wd
Make sure that the .my.cnf file is readable ONLY by the user who it belongs to, since it has their password in it!

Is it possible to have animated Gifs as output when using ImageGif? It doesn't work the simple way, but is there another way to create animated gifs with the help of the single images ?

In my opinion, PHP is faster than perl. With the PHP4/Zend combo, this is even more of an increase. PHP has native db drivers too. Don't get me wrong, perl definitely has it's advantages especially in system administration but I find PHP much more suited for my web needs.

Subject: [PHP3] php vs pearl
Hi..
I've been at PHP for a few months now. Prior to this it was only html.
While I am sold; I've bought the Core book, talked my isp into installing php and a few other things but they are still giving me hassles about "why" I don't go with pearl... I don't know pearl enough to answer. I've seen a list or two of comparative reasons a while ago but don't have them now...
Can I hear some?
Thanks..

Perl +----+ Far widly used (ATM) Lots of Prewritten Scripts Its a programing Lang
PHP Easy to pick Up Powerful for db connections Easy Gif Creation Its a Hypertext Preparser rather than a programing language.
Perl and PHP are here for different reasons sorta. Perl is actually a programing lang that has been used for CGI where as php has as far as I know been developed for the web only
