I need a customer to be able to upload a flat text table via a web form.

I do this with the <input type=file> on a form and the copy() function.
Then I use a php script to load the data into the MySql table:
mysql_query ("load data local infile '/file_directory/$myfile_name' into
table samename")

PROBLEM:
The upload works, and the load data script runs, but only one line of
the file is read into the table.

If I manually ftp the file up to the web server, then load data, all the
lines are read into the table.

The only difference I see is the ownership of the UPLOADED file.
Uploaded via web form, the owner is NOBODY; if I upload it, ftp, the
owner is in my name.

I use PAIR networks, not my own servers.

Any solution?

I pulled the file uploaded via the browser form up in vi editor. There is a foreign character at the beginning of each new line - ^M

Only the first line imports into the db with the load data infile command. I assume the ^M is ending it.

So why is the browser upload inserting the ^M (instead of newline?), and how can I prevent it with the browser upload?

I'm not sure. But.

It's possible that you can run a quick routine to read the file and find that character, I'm guessing it's a chr(10) and strip it out and leave the unix new line.

I run into this problem with translation issues from pc to linux and mac.

I can't quite remember which characters are for which platform and someone can correct me if I'm wrong here but Linux uses chr(13) for linefeeds (CR), PC uses chr(10)chr(13) (CRLF), and Mac uses just chr(10) (LF).

So, when you butt up against each other they don't work all the time.

the ^M character is a new line, remember old Modem Strings which had to end in ^M? the problem is the server isn't recognizing it so it's just putting in that character.

I have looked through every php site I know and searched through the newsgroups and mailing lists. I have found nothing having to do with this problem. The ONLY thing I can think of is perhaps bringing in the file and looping through it chopping each line (chop()) which may get rid of that character.

I'm sorry to give you no actual information.

If I think I understand your question, it's possible to "escape out" to HTML again from within an if-then-else:

<?php if ($foo == 4) : ?> <p>Foo is four. <?php else : ?> <p>Foo is not four. <?php endif; ?>

You are confusing the use of echo and the switch between PHP and HTML.

If I understand your question, then this does what you want:

<? if ($something_is_true) { echo "Bedankt ... ziens."; } else { echo "Something else."; } ?>

So does this:

<? if ($something_is_true) { ?>Bedankt ... ziens."<? } else { ?>Something else.<? } ?>

And this: <? if ($something_is_true) {?> Bedankt ... ziens <? } else { ?> Something else <? } ?>

There's another syntax using <? if(): ?> and <? endif ?>, but I never get that right so I won't show it.

Hi! how do I execute a program from within a php script. On the command line , I type in " itrans -v -i filename.itx -o file.html" which asks the program itrans to convert a .itx file into a .html file.

Now, if I want the same thing to occur from inside a php script, what do i need to do.

thanks victor

I'm looking for recommendations on which database servers work _WELL_ with PHP3. Cost not being an issue and can run on Linux or Windows NT. Does MySQL work as well on Windows as it does on *nix?

Not looking for religious wars just looking for comments on solutions people are running and have not had _ANY_ problems with.

Thanks, Jonathan

MySQL v3.22.32, released a few days ago, works great on UNIX and Windows. Just download it, forget anything else unless you're aiming for Oracle (you want to take over the world) territory, in which case go for Oracle. Seriously though, MySQL runs great, it's multi-platform, scales well for the most part, and is pretty darn secure with the latest fixes. As I said, just go download it.

attached mail follows:

This is a bit of an odd question. ALL databases have configuration issues when you get to a reasonably large size database (i.e. one that stores more data than can fit onto one disk). So, when you request to not have _ANY_ problems that's not realistic for a big database (regardless of vendor). If you just have a small database, then all of the databases you can think of have at least a reasonable solution. php supports most databases so almost anyone of them will do fine. Some however are easier to get running out of the box than others. My impression is that MySQL is the easiest to get running out of the box on a linux server simply because so many people on this list use that solution. They'll be lots of support and I believe MySQL has easy to install RPM packages for linux.

However, if your database is going to grow, then MySQL may not be the best solution. While I'm not trying to knock MySQL, I don't know of many instance of MySQL being used on terabyte size databases with multiple thousands of simultaneous connections. I do know that the commercial vendors (Informix, Sybase, Oracle) do have huge installs and ... yes ... installation and maintenance is non-trivial.

Some warnings about Linux. The file system does not yet (as far as I know) support raw partitions, this will impede performance of any database on Linux. Raw partition support is in the works, but I don't think it is there yet. Also, Linux uses an optimistic file caching mechanism that makes general usage appear very fast; however, in a database situation it may not be right choice. Solaris is my favorite when it comes to running database software.

Several months ago I began the long and difficult process of getting PHP and PDF to work together. I did succeed with version 0.6 but only after some difficulty and frustration....so when the need to load this extension on my test server came up, I was a little concerned but I jumped in and thought...It can't get any worse! It is actually a lot better....I got through most of it on the first try and even got the php_open_tiff function to work. I thought maybe sharing this information would be a good idea so...... Platform: Red Hat Linux V 6.1 and 5.2 (tried it on both) WWW Server Apache 1.3.9 PHP Version 3.0.14 PDF Version 2.01 Tiff Library 3.4 Jpeg Library Version 6b Zlib Library 1.1.3 GD Library 1.3

1. I compiled the Tiff,Jpeg and Zlib libraries first, no problems with those 2. I compiled the PDF Library with ./configure --prefix=/usr --enable-shared=yes --with-pnglib=no 3. Then I made the symbolic link in the /usr/lib directory from libpdf2.01.so >> libpdf.so 4. Next I edited the pdf.c and php3_pdf.h files...all I did here was to find any reference to JPEG then copy it and change that section to TIFF....do it in both files 5. Next I compiled PHP with this configure ./configure --with-apache=/APACHE SRC --with-gd=/usr/gd1.3 --with-mysql --with-pdflib=/usr --with-jpeg-dir=/local/bin --with-tiff-dir=/local/lib --with-zlib-dir=/local/lib An everything compiled OK...no warnings even....You can then compile Apache and get started with the PDF functions.

I just wanted to share my success with those of you trying to make this work..Hope this helped Mike Miller

p.s. Thanks Anders and Uwe for steering me in the right directions...

Does anyone have any ideas on how to do this. I have 30 fields and don't want them on one line.

Please respond to this.....

Best regards

First, I hope you did finish the $query properly by using a " (double quote), even though it doesn't show above.

Second, you could aways try:

$query = "create table holst_media ("; $query .= "id int(11) default '0' not null auto_increment, "; $query .= "field1 varchar(255), "; ... etc, etc $query .= ")";

That is, putting all the pieces together one by one until you have one very long string containing all of the SQL code. I do this a lot and it sure improves readability.

If this doesn't help perhaps you could describe the errors in detail. Messages, PHP code relevant to your problem etc.

If you are using mySQL, you can use the Limit keyworkd for the Select command. It allows you to specify a range of records (they call it 'offset' and 'rows'). Then include a 'next 20' link that knows the next row number and you're golden.

Why?

I'm trying to get php and mod_perl / mason to coexist and setting the handler back to the default-handler for a section of the site where php is needed does not seem to work.

<Location /> SetHandler perl-script PerlHandler HTML::Mason </Location>

<Location /horde> SetHandler default-handler </Location>

And yes I do have the php3 AddType line in the conf file.

php works fine if I turn off the <location /> directives.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

experience, but I have nothing to reference this by.

Does anyone out there have any hard and steady rules on when it is time to move your site to a new, faster server?

I have been working on my site (http://www.redhotsweeps.com) for 2 years now. Over time, we have seen a steady increase in traffic. As it is right now, we are seeing approx. 4,000 people/day. Over the last few months, I have started seeing more and more errors in my error_log file. 80%-90% of them are people just hitting the stop button or reloading a page before the original finished. But the rest are errors like,

'No more child spawning available.' 'Script terminated due to malformed headers' - The scripts that give this error are functional scripts. This just happens about 2-3 times/week. No known reason.

I have contacted my host about these errors and try and blame my banner script (WebAdverts). Only problem is that I have been using this for over 2 years and never noticed any problems like this before.

Can anyone point me to any relivant material or give me any usefull information?

Thanks in advance.

If your hosting company throws you off their servers, it's a good time to move on. Aside from that, no idea, sorry.

> I have contacted my host about these errors and try and blame my > banner script (WebAdverts). Only problem is that I have been using > this for over 2 years and never noticed any problems like this before.

Questions... 1. What version of PHP are they using? 2. What database and version of that are they using? 3. How involved are your scripts, could they have started messing up the database somehow from people not entering correct info, stopping their web browsers loading pages or going back to previous pages? 4. What web server are they using? 5. Have they updated any server software in the last few months?

well, if you're getting errors like that, you should be using Php! or at the very least, mod_perl.

Hey

We are having problems using the mail() function on Winnt 4.0 using php3.0.11 and 4.0beta3. We have made sure that the php.ini file is setup correctly in the [mail function] section specifying the mail server name, then we also tried just it's ip address, we have also made sure to include a valid email address for "sendmail_from= ". The only thing that happens is that php returns an error saying there was a "Server Error", after watching the mail server logs, we can see that php connects to the server, but thats it, it only opens a connection. Any ideas why. Our mail server is Eudora running on a Mac.

Anyone else run into this problem? I have searched this site and wasnt able to find any other info to help.

I know that my php code is correct, the mail() function is pretty trivial, but below is where the mail function is called

if(mail("gilfetherrpxi.com","My Test Subject", "this is the message body. message goes here. this is a message.")) print "<BR><B> Mail Successfully Sent </B><BR>";

You'll need to do something to get the headers and look for Content-Type.

Hi,

As you can see on the subject line we are using : Apache 1.3.9 Php 3.0.14 Oracle 8.1.5.0 Installed in client mode (OCI8) on Linux RedHat 6.1

We are trying to make running PHP with OCI8 and have no result ... We have choose the --with-oci8=/HOME_ORACLE at the PHP compilation, the compiltation is good, but when we try a phpinfo() we do not see Oracle, we only see MySQL, and when we try a PHP script with for example OCILogon instruction, PHP always reply : Fatal error: Call to unsupported or undefined function ocilogon() in /home/www/htdocs/oracle.php3 on line 5

Do you have any idea to solve this problem ... We have no trouble with MySQL ... but nothing to get any result with Oracle ...

Thanks per advance for your answers,

Are you sure you should be using --with-oci8? Try ./configure --help to see which switches are available and I think you will find that you should be using --with-oracle instead.

I should have said connection to database server, not webserver.

phpinfo() runs from the command line just fine. in fact it runs from the webserver just fine. (ie. calling a .php file with just phpinfo() in it through a browser)

both methods reveal that msql functions are compiled in. the tricky part is that somehow, the environment that is set up when the php binary is called from apache, is not allowing the msql functions to work.

Yes, php has been compiled with the support for the correct version of msql

if i create a file with msql_connect(); in it, (and that's the only thing in it.)

and pipe it through php from the command line,it works just fine.

If i add #!/usr/local/bin/php as the first line of the file, and chmod 755, and then execute the script from the command line as ./testphp.cgi it works just fine if i call it from a browser window (thus making it get called from apache) it doesn't work

Again, the only parts of my php binary that aren't working, are the msql calls. actually, i think the only problem is that msql_connect does not work. If i could get the connection to work, then the rest of the calls would probably work just fine. Lindsay Adams Dingos.net lindsaydingos.net

However, If the main gear weights are taken at the same distance from the nose of the aircraft (as they are in any plane I have ever seen) and the nose or tail wheel is the other one then the equation should be

distance from main gear to balance point = ($nmg * $dist)/($lmg+$rmg+$nmg)

in the obvious direction (i.e the direction towards the other gear. If it's not the plane will not be stable sitting on the runway, much less in the air).

This is of course assuming that the $lmg = $rmg. (the plane is balanced along the propellor's axis of rotation) Otherwise you'd have a pretty funny flying airplane.

Thus endeth the Statics 201 lecture for the day. Use at your own risk. I only design things that take people 120 feet in the air and we try very hard to keep all 4 wheels firmly planted on the ground. My employer does not endorse this email.

Hope this helps.

If you are working in PHP using any variety of MS Windows, I think you might find the best editor out there is Homesite from Allaire (http://www.allaire.com).

The Homesite editor does syntax highlighting (for PHP3 at least) and permits automatic FTP for the files you are working on.

I saw an example of this in a book. Don't have exact code, but this will give you an idea.

I believe you will need to reload the page and if an option for the first form menu was set, then query your database and get the options available for that option. Then let PHP fill in the next menu.

To fill in the form you can use this. For example to list the all the tables of a DB on a menu form, do this (PHP Programming pg250)

<FORM ACTION="mysql_test.php3" METHOD=POST> Please select the table you want to query:<BR><BR> <SELECT NAME=database SIZE=1> <? // and connect to Db //... $db_table = mysql_list_dbs();

for ($1=0; $i < mysql_num_rows($db_table); $i++) { echo("<OPTION>" . mysql_tablename($db_table, $i)); } ?> </SELECT><BR><BR>

This should help you get started and I am pretty sure, some similar commands exist for your query.

Here is the code I have <TR><TD align="right">Name: </TD><TD align="left"><input type=text name='name' size=75><br></TD></TR> <TR><TD align="right">Category </TD><TD><select name="cat" size="1"> <option value="linux">Linux</option> </option><option value="windows">Windows </option><option value="dos">Dos </option><option value="Mac">Mac </option><option value="misc">misc </option></select></TD></TR>

Assuming:

1. the Linux box has an IP address 111.111.111.111 2. you already have granted some minimal privileges to a user called "http" 3. user "http" does not require a password

something like this ought to work:

$DB = mysql_connect("111.111.111.111","http",""); mysql_select_db("DBNAME");

This is how I use the Linux MySQL database from our IIS (Win2000) server.

Simple, huh? -- thanks to the folks who designed PHP! --John

I would use vals[parent1][feature1] as the name, and then in PHP you can do not unlike:

while (list($k, $v) = each($vals){ $keys = explode('][', $k); //Is it always 2-D? $vals[$keys[0]][$keys[1]] = $v; //Or, if the dimensions vary: $statement = '$vals'; while (list(,$key) = each($keys)){ $statement .= "[$key]"; } $statement .= ' = $v'; eval($statement); }

hintlist:

1. use a while loop instead of combinations of "if" and do/while (it would be exactly the same result, but looks much better and is cleaner) 2. when you put a "mail()" into a loop, it sends one mail per loop (that should be clear in the moment you decide to use loops)

solution: simply use mail after the loop.

It would be fine if I can see the names of the authors. Links to "More detail" could be something more, than links to the reviews.

Have a look at http://www.php.net/books.php3.

Read the manual at http://www.php.net search for files.

This is some code from one of my programs.

To read a delimited text file:

if(is_file("$DoorQuoteFile")) { $FSize = filesize("$DoorQuoteFile"); // clear out $data each time... unset($data); $num = 0; $row=1; $ReadFile = fopen($DoorQuoteFile,"r");//Opens the data file

while ($data = fgetcsv($ReadFile,$FSize)) { //Turns the file into an array by looping... $num = count($data);

//The array... $doors[$row] = array($data[0], $data[1], $data[2], $data[3], $data[4], $data[5], $data[6], $data[7], $data[8], $data[9], $data[10], $data[11], $data[12], $data[13], $data[14]); $row++; } }//if is_file end

To write a delimited text file.

$ReWriteFile = fopen("$DoorQuoteFile","w");

if(!($ReWriteFile)) { print("Error: "); print("'File' could not be created\n"); exit; } for($Z=1; $Z<= $row-1; $Z++)

if($Quantity[$Z] < "1" || $Quantity[$Z] == "0" || $Quantity[$Z] == "") { //Do Nothing } else {

$Var1=($Quantity[$Z].",".$Width[$Z].",".$Height[$Z].",".$doors[$Z][3].",".$d oors[$Z][4].",".$A[$Z].",".$B[$Z].",".$C[$Z].",".$D[$Z].",".$M[$Z].",".$door s[$Z][10].",".$doors[$Z][11].",".$doors[$Z][12].",".$doors[$Z][13].",".$door s[$Z][14]); fputs($ReWriteFile, "$Var1"."\n"); }// if($Quantity[$Z] End........

} //for($Z=1; $Z<= $row; $Z += 1) loop End.......

fclose($ReWriteFile); // close the file.......

i think what's happening here is that my gd is linked against png, ttf, and Xpm, so if configure checks for gdImageCreateFromPng() against just -lgd or -lgd -lpng, it will fail. it needs -lgd -lpng -lttf -L/usr/X11R6/lib -lXpm -lX11 to successfully compile something to properly use gdImageCreateFromPng().

for example:

[rootweb99 /root]# cat testgd.c #include <gd.h> int main(int argc, char *argv[]) { gdImagePtr nog; nog = gdImageCreateFromPng(NULL); return 0; }

(yes the NULL is bad).

am i on the right track here?

unfortunately i'm rather configure-script-illiterate. if anyone could suggest the proper way to "fix" this, i would appreciate it.

i mentioned before about how i manually add -lpng -L/usr/X11R6/lib -lXpm -lX11 to my APXS_LDFLAGS so my apache doesn't fail to start post-configure, but i didn't catch before that it wasn't including the proper gd support because of this at an earlier stage...frown.

here's what i did to hack it to work:

perl -pi -e 's/LIBS="-lgd/LIBS="-lgd -lpng -lttf -L\/usr\/X11R6\/lib -lXpm -lX11/g' configure

and then:

[rootweb99 php-3.0.14]# ./configure --with-apxs=/usr/webservers/https-web99/bin/apxs --with-config-file-path=/usr/webservers/https-web99/conf --with-gd --with-mysql --with-pgsql=/usr --with-ttf --with-x --with-ldap --with-snmp --with-xml --with-zlib --with-gdbm --with-db2 | grep -i gd checking for gdbm_open in -lgdbm... (cached) yes checking for gdImageCreateFromGif in -lgd... (cached) no checking for gdImageColorResolve in -lgd... (cached) yes checking for gdImageGif in -lgd... (cached) no checking for gdImageCopyMerge in -lgd... (cached) yes checking for gdImageGifToSink in -lgd... (cached) no checking for gdImageString16 in -lgd... (cached) yes checking whether to enable t1lib support with GD... no checking for gdbm_open in -lgdbm... no checking for GDBM support... yes creating extra/gd/bdf2gdfont

i still need to append "-L/usr/X11R6/lib -lXpm -lX11" to APXS_LDFLAGS in the Makefile then, but after that and a build and install...it works!

woo!

that can't be used for everyone tho, since not everyone uses a gd built against ttf and Xpm. there must be a way to check for that somehow and adjust the configure script accordingly, no?

I want to distinguish between Man and Non Mac users to my site. And I know there has got to be a way to do it using:

getenv("HTTP_USER_AGENT")

But I guess I do not know how to compare the response so I can always tell the difference.

I tried searching the archive with no success, does anyone have a good if then type statement that will help me accomplish this.

Many thanks.

Brian

If it's just Mac/Not Mac you want to distinguish, just search for "Macintosh" in the user agent....

This is going to sound excessively stupid, but I'll ask anyway:

I've searched through the message archives and can't find anything, definitive. So would anyone know how php may/could access corba?

I've written a full ftp class that talks directly to port 21, and finding similar things for pop servers is also easy. Does corba run on a port that can be accessed similarly?

I'm lost here.

I know GNOME uses the ORBit CORBA library (see http://www.gnome.org). I have idly thought that building a PHP front end to ORBit might be useful, but haven't done thing one about it. Such an interface would allow PHP to, among other things, control any GNOME application, such as the GIMP.

ORBit seems the best tool from my casual glance, for the following reasons: 1. Open Source (of course) 2. Small - 30K footprint according to the GNOME folk. 3. Used by a fairly large no. of CORBA applications (the GNOME things, among others, so likely to continue to be maintained and used. Also probably actually usable.

I, of course, am an object newbie so nothing I say has much validity :O)

I am working on a web site where we are collecting/creating simple tips for linux users and we want to set something up so that on the front pageof the site it displays 4-5 random tips from the database (simple text field), but I can't think of any way to pull 5 random lines from the database.

Any suggestions would be great.

BTW php3 and mysql and apache

If you know the ids, select several random numbers, then pull those queries. If you don't know the ids, pick a random number, and pull a query from the database until you get however many results. It obviously helps if you know a range, and can get your random number to select from a smaller field.

Zip the files together into one big zip?

The whole point of persistent connections is that they hang around for the same user to use them again...

You only have persistent connections if you are using PHP4 and the ISAPI Module and you ask for them.

I have several questions regarding passwords with FreeBSD.

If I got a password file from Caldera and want to convert it to FreeBSD v3.4 i'm not sure what kind of encryption is used with Caldera if it's MD5/DES or whatever. If i had the password file and want to convert it to FreeBSD is there a way?

Is there a way to go from MD5 to DES or DES to MD5?

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi,

I have the following problem.

The query:

select * from table1 left join table2 on table1.Clientid = table2.Clientid where table1.Clientid = 2110

This works fine from the mysql client, return both tables.

But in php, it will only return the data on table1.

$strsql = "select * from table1 left join table2 on table1.Clientid = table2.Clientid where table1.Clientid = 2110";

$result = mysql_db_query($database,$strsql);

(For testing)

for ($z=0;$z<400;$z++)

{

echo mysql_field_name($result,$z);

}

exit;

Only returns the field names for the first table.

I know the mysql_field_name will not return the field name if it contains a NULL, but most of the fields contain 0 or other integers.

Even specifying with mysql_result($result,$i,$fieldname)

If I try to specify the fieldname on the second table I get the mysql error that that fieldname is not in the result index.
