Hi all...

I'm tring to build mod_php3 (3.0.12) on Linux Mandrake 6.1 with Apache
1.3.9, MySQL 3.22.25 and Oracle 7.3.3.5.0 support (using Oracle 8.1.5.0.2
client libraries). Make seems to fail on internal-functions.c. Here are the
options that I fed to configure:

./configure \
        --with-apxs=/usr/sbin/apxs \
        --prefix=/usr \
        --with-gd \
        --with-mysql=/usr \
        --with-oracle=/usr/local/oracle/8i/u01/app/oracle/product/8.1.5 \
        --with-zlib \
        --with-dbase \
        --with-filepro \
        --with-config-file-path=/etc/httpd/conf \
        --with-fdftk=no \
        --enable-debug=no \
        --enable-magic-quotes \
        --enable-debugger \
        --enable-bcmath \
        --enable-track-vars \
        --enable-safe-mode \
        --with-exec-dir=/usr/bin \
        --with-system-regex

Here is where it starts to fail...

gcc -g -O2 -O6 -fomit-frame-pointer -fno-exceptions -fno-rtti -pipe -s
-mpentium -mcpu=pentium -march=pentium -ffast-math -fexpensive-optimizations

-- snip --

It also looks like it's trying to use OCI. I have the Oracle 8.1.5.0.2
client but I need to connect to a remote Oracle 7.3.3.5.0 DB. Is this going to
work?

P.S. this is the first time that I've tried to compile php3. Usually I use the
rpm versions. The config options that I used (with the exception of
--with-mysql and --with-oracle) came from the mod_php3-3.0.12-12.src.rpm file.

Need assistance please; Require the html form to search mysql table for varing Nos of days. When this is typed manually to Mysql the Results for past 7 days appear: current_date - period < 00000008

Whats required is to get this query from html to mysql via php.

Any corrections offered for the php script???

Hey all,

I'm rather new to the list, and I'm not sure of the proper list-etiquette yet. Is there a FAQ somewhere that might answer some simple or general questions?

What I'm trying to do right now is convert the TimeStamp from MySQL into a read-able Date/Time. I've tried a few solutions offered on the php.net website, but they were not successful.

I'm running MySQL 3.22.21.

TIA

Adam Israel

attached mail follows:

good idea asking about the faq's. there are none, but i was thinking of writing some since it seems the same questions are asked every week at least once.

to convert timestamp you will either have to regular expression it, or make the date/time with a bunch of substrings.

Thanks Mark. I used date_format on the field, and it works great.

It's linked rather promiscuously under the "Documentation" button from the PHP web-site.

I would assume there is a MySQL FAQ somewhere at http://www.mysql.org

The problem in my virtualhosts wasn't because of a bad configuration.

The problem is that I use SetWWWTheme, a perl script to insert HTML code to HTML files automatically (a way to insert banners on-line).

The wayto execute the script is:

<Location /somewhere> SetHandler perl-script PerlHandler Apache::SetWWWTheme PerlSetVar CONFIG_FILE /WWW/Configuration </Location>

So if I use it in my VirtualHost, PHP doesn't work :(

Anyone has any idea of how can I fix this problem?

Thanks.

Finally I found a way to fix it:

<VirtualHost 194.224.200.60:80> SSLDisable ..... # Mete el banner <Files ~ (\.htm)> SetHandler perl-script PerlHandler Apache::SetWWWTheme PerlSetVar CONFIG_FILE /home/httpd/themes/Config </Files> <Files ~ (\.html)> SetHandler perl-script PerlHandler Apache::SetWWWTheme PerlSetVar CONFIG_FILE /home/httpd/themes/Config </Files> ..... </VirtualHost>

It only affects to .ht* files, so .php files work OK :-)

I read the section for the "mysql_fetch_array()", that's where I got the idea for the code in my original post but it didn't explain why both the "numerical key" and the "string key" are both displayed during that "while" loop.

The reason I'm inquiring about this is because I need to extract the contents of a specific MySQL table and incorporate it into a HTML form with only the name (the string key) and it's value. I want the specific PHP code to be generic code for all of the specific MySQL tables.

Ex.

The MySQL table contains the following information:

id <---- the ID number of a graphic for example Img_data <---- the binary data of the image Img_Name <---- the name of the graphic (i.e. image.gif)

The PHP code in the form would then connect to the DB and retrieve each row (mysql_fetch_array()) and display it in HTML. The code might contain something like:

<img src="<? getImg_function(); ?>" name="<? $Img_Name ?>">

or something along those lines. The "getImg_function()" would get the binary data and return a variable to display the image. That's the reason I want to just get the "string key" from the array. I want to be able to use the same function call for any table without having to look up each and every column name from each table.

Is this possible or am I trying to accomplish something that I should use PERL for?? I know PERL but I'd like to do this in PHP to broaden my programming horizons ;o)

From the manual:

"The optional second argument result_type in mysql_fetch_array() is a constant and can take the following values: MYSQL_ASSOC, MYSQL_NUM, and MYSQL_BOTH. (This feature was added in PHP 3.0.7)"

The default is MYSQL_BOTH.

That means you'll get *both* ASSOCiative and NUMerical indices.

If you only want one or the other, just ask for it.

If you use the sleep function the net effect will be that your page appears to take longer to respond. If what you are wanting is for something to happen on the client side every X seconds you will have to use javascript or use the refresh header/meta tag.

For the JS solution look at the setInterval setTimeout function. They let you (or at least setInterval does) schedule a javascript function to take place in the future without halting the system (like sleep does).

Hope this helps.

Errrrr. Once the page is delivered to the client, the connection from the server to the client is closed.

There really isn't a whole lot of interesting uses for a function to fire off later that can't get to the user.

And if you want that, you can have a page that schedules a one-off at job.

I was thinking of placing one result on the left column and placing the 2nd result on the right, then forcing the table to change row; and repeat the process. Just have to figure out how.

I have seen several requests asking to know the MySQL row number, but have not seen a response. I doubt this can be done.

you could do a little recursion

like

while ($rowl = mysql_fetch_array($result)) { $row2 = mysql_fetch_array($result) ?> <tr><td><? echo $row1['name']; ?></td> <td><td><? echo $row2['name']; ?></td> </tr> <? }

i am unclear about 'row number'; i would increment a counter varible inside the while loop if you need to 'count up to' the number of records

First up, you can use "shift" to extract function arguments one by one, thus avoiding the dreaded _ variable in this case ;)

Secondly, the special variables and operators needed in most programs are few--you listed most of them. The rest of them are, admittedly, somewhat arcane, but at least the special variables have English equivalents for writing readable code (perldoc English).

The reason for all these syntactical elements? Convenience, I guess. I at least prefer writing $foo =~ s/bar/baz/ over $foo = preg_replace("/bar/", "baz", $foo).

Also, I have found that Perl exposes (or exports) a much larger part of the underlying system than PHP3, which I find somewhat lacking in a few key areas (the filesystem interface, to name one).

Not to mention the vast amount of add-on packages for Perl (CPAN).

> Also the object oriented implementation of perl is just.... well... very > odd. The php object implementation is just...well...very clean.

I can't really comment on that since I haven't used the PHP3 object oriented interface (and rarely codes object oriented Perl).

I expected no less. Note that my original mail wasn't entirely negative towards PHP3 (or I probably wouldn't be on this list at all). I find PHP3 useful for web applications in spite of some shortcomings, but I wouldn't dream of choosing it over Perl for day to day scripting.

The problem with the Perl approach is that someone new to the language has no idea what =~ does and it is pretty hard to look up =~ or $_ or any of these cryptic symbols in a manual. At least with the more verbose and precedural approach PHP takes you always have a legible keyword to pop into the quick-ref and you can figure out what the line does. > I expected no less. And that pretty much describes where PHP fits. It is a web scripting language targetted at web scripting. The fact that a Perl fan like you uses PHP for web scripting at all shows that we are on the right track.

Perl has always looked to me like somebody sneezed on the screen. I find it unaesthetic, inelegant, and unmaintainable. IMHO the fact that the "Obfuscatory Perl Contest" used to be a primary pasttime of Perl programmers says it all. But of course, YMMV. :O) I have a friend who writes all his web stuff in ANSI C. It runs very fast, of course, but...

Programming is the only "engineering" discipline I can think of where the practitioners write prose instead of drawing pictures on computer screens. I've long wondered why that is. Of course, that's less true now than it used to be.

Hello.

I've found the module Apache::ASP.

It is supposed to understand ASP programmed files. Do I need it to execute ASP code or PHP4 can already do it?

Apache::ASP is a mod_perl thing. It has nothing to do with PHP. And yes, it can be used to execute ASP code, but only if this code is written in Perl which most ASP code tends not to be.

There is an asp2php utility that will convert the bulk of the code for large sites.

You'll still need to hand-fix a lot, but it can do the bulk of the mindless conversion.

There is a ChiliSoft ASP for Linux, which was last benchmarked as "Couldn't even run the damn thing" but I heard through the grape-vine that there's a new release, so maybe it actually works now...

If by "code" you mean files written in php and used in webpages, there is a real problem with using php as a server module, unless I'm overlooking something.

In this case, all files must be readable by the webserver. One user then could write a trivial php that displays another's php. I'm not too familiar with using php as a CGI though, and there may be a way to use suid (as in apache) to protect private php files.

That's what safe mode is for.

Read the security section of the online manual.

OK, I've finally figured out a way to just get the "string" keys from a MySQL table. I've noticed that each "even" number contained the column heading from the table so I put on my PERL hat and remembered that the "modulus" worked for both PHP and PERL.

I then implemented an "IF" statement (if ($x % 2 == 0) then next else ...) and that printed EXACTLY what I was looking for so now it's just a matter of incorporating it into my actual code.

I appreciated all the responses and I believe I can now TERMINATE this thread :o)

Below is my original test script and the same script with the additions if anyone wants to see.

Hello everyone...

I have a related question. I have n application which uses apache http authentication (htaccess file) to grant access to several users. I would like to know if there is some way, using php code to know which user is accessing the document. I tried $HTTP_AUTH_USER (is that the correct name? ... anyway), but I think that only works if the authentication is don using php code as well. If it is done through apache, then the variable has no value at all. Is this right? Does anybody knows if this can be done?

Thanks a lot

Not entirely, the http authentication protocol does not have a logoff feature, but it can be 'faked'. All you need to do is deny a user once, and generate a fresh realm and the user will be effectively logged off. I created a skeleton script some time ago, you can find it at:

Sure, IE is tied to the OS. But that's just the reason for IE starting up quite fast. But IE also renders pages faster than NS. And it happened more than once to me under Win, that because of a crashed NS or some other app, I had to restart the system. Why does everybody say that IE is that bad? Just because it's from M$?

Yes.

If that isn't enough reason: It crashes. A lot. It allows sloppy HTML. It crashes. A lot. It has too many non-standard extensions to HTML. It crashes. A lot. It's rushed out to market without testing. It crashes. A lot. It's from Microsoft. It crashes. A lot.

I don't know what your talking about.

Ever use Netscape with a lot of tables? Its slow! (And tends to crash a lot - more than IE - under anything but windows) Tables also don't always align properly (with the width settings) this is pretty pathetic concidering netscape was the 1st out there to support tables! Or, ever load 500+ images with netscape on one page? IE handles it fine on my celeron 400, but Netscape bogs down majorly, and don't resize the screen whatever you do! Netscape will refresh the entire page!

As with the non-standard extensions to HTML, netscape barely supports the ones that are standard.

Ever load a page with multiple textboxes with Netscape. Yah fill them out, and hit enter, nothing happens. you have to actually tab to the submit button or physicly click on the submit button (what for I don't know) where IE will do what you expect, hitting enter will submit the form (without the need for a bunch of jscript)

IE does have a lot of non-standard HTML extentions, however anything new isn't standard, it becomes a standard with use. Netscape stopped making new stuff a long time ago, so should all browsers stop there? No. They should forge ahead, put in new things into their browsers to make them better, and submit them to w3c for approval. I don't think jscript was exactly standard with it 1st came out on netscape and IE, both browsers are just as bad with unstandard HTML, IE is just worse at this moment because netscape hasn't had anything majorly new since 3.4.

And with the rushing out to market without testing I have got to disagree on, I have several friends at Microsoft, and in their perspective groups the testers outnumber the developers 2 to 1! (not counting Program Mangers, etc) take a look at IE's feature set compared to Netscapes, and you'll see that IE has a far larger feature set, this could be the reason for it being a little more unstable, and/or buggy. As a product gets bigger, theres prone to be more overlooked things.
