Hi all
I'm trying to use the regular expression function eregi in php.
I'm trying to create a regular expression that will match all valid email
addresses, but just the name part. ie the bit before the
sign.
code shown
if (eregi("[0-9a-zA-Z]+\.?[0-9a-zA-Z]+", $txtEmail))
echo "passed";
else
echo "failed";
I want to allow names like
john.smith
johnsmith
jon12.smith
but not
john.
.john
Using grep under linux the regular expression appeares to work, but Using php,
I keep getting a false back. What am I doing rong?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Hi,
I'm a newbie and I have some problems to improve my first small script....
With some useful suggentions, I've written a small script in order to search
in a flat file where each rows is a record, and each record contains 4
fields...
This below is a small piece of the script:
if(!$arrtext=file("form.txt")) { echo("cannot open the file"); }
else {
$b=count($arrtext);
$tot=0;
for($i=0;$i<$b;$i++)
if (eregi($ricerca,$arrtext[$i])) { /* $ricerca is my query */
print $arrtext[$i] . "<br>\n";
$tot++; /* $tot is a val to count how many records I found */
}
}
}
It works fine, but my problem is I would like to print out the matches in
one or more pages (for example: the first 5° records in one page, the second
5° in another page, and so on), I have not idea how I can do it......
I mean: I think that, probably, I have to create another array variable
where its elements are the matches founded and then write a link on the fly
with the correct query string to GET the next records, but I don't know how
I can do it......
Could anyone help or suggested me an idea or a sample in order to solve my
problem?
Many thanks in advance.

There is a recent tutorial on phpbuilder on just this topic (well, it's
based on an sql dataset, not a textfile, but for your purposes should do the
trick).

>itself. The problem might not lie with setcookie() at all but with cookies in general. I've had very little success with them. Last fall, I worked on a project that depended on a simple, single-variable cookie being set. Was using CGI.pm in perl at the time. Everything worked flawlessly on every machine and browser I tried, both at work and at home. Trouble was, all those machines had permanent addresses. When we
turned the project on to dial-up users, the cookies didn't set. Never.
Thinking there was something wrong with CGI.pm, I rewrote things to use javascript to set the cookies. Same result. I don't know to this day what was wrong. The dial-up versus hard connection thing doesn't really
make sense to me, but it was the only consistent thread we could find. In any case, this was a time critical project and we missed the window, so we shelved it. I've posted about this on several newsgroups and lists without ever getting a solution or even a hint of what could have been wrong. Still bugs me. Anyway, I always expect problems from cookies.

I note that when I run a query from the mysql shell, it reports the time required for the query. Is there a way to get that data from the PHP interface to mysql? I'd like to have the number to assist in profiling my code. My alternative is to use microtime() around queries. G

I think my solution _does_ take care of the race condition. If you're very concerned with speed you should not use mine because it can potentially sleep() for several seconds before failing to get a lock. My solution is only about taking care of the race condition. Please help me determine how/if it fails at taking care of it. If it does fail, how do you think it should be changed?

I don't know, which one is faster, delete and check or open the file in write mode and write a record and close it. May be write would be faster, I don't know.

Hi Ben,
I use delete option in mysite and so far I haven't gotten any race conditions. The logic I used was
delete the file if delete successful update the counter else wait and repeat the step (random) end if
This will remove 75% of race condition in my logic. But I think, with the write logic I doubt the race condition at all. I agree with you, two people can not open the file in write mode at the same time, can they? But for the shake of discussion, Two users trying to get the file in T1 second, both try to open the file and the open fails. Now you wait for T2 seconds (here is where the race condition occurs) and since they wait for the same time period, both of them are back to square one. The solution here is, instead of using a constant value in sleep, use a random seconds in sleep. This will for sure will avoid any race condition.

I don't know, which one is faster, delete and check or open the file in write mode and write a record and close it. May be write would be faster, I don't know.

So, anyone care to share an example of shared memory being shared among processes in different languages? I can't seem to get my C code to talk to my PHP3 code's shared memory. I realize the data will be serialzed PHP variables (I can deal with that), but the data doesn't seem to end up in the same place, even with the same key! Perhaps the key_t values in C don't map to PHP's "key"s...?
This is going to be a major bummer if I can't do this. What we really need are some better shared memory manipulation functions... PHP4 maybe? For example, I'd like to at the very least, have a shm_(get|put)_byte($shm_identitifer, $offset) function. And an implementation of ftok() would be handy, too, to generate keys. And of course, this assumes the keys generated mapped 1:1 to the ones shmget, shmat, etc. use!
Any hope for this? Ideas? Example code?

it doesn't work. cause of my little experience in these matters I can't

anything. what commands should I be lookin for if I want the $array22

array(165.454,170.407,171.805,169.643,164.990,160.587) ); if I would use

any help, or was the question to difficult to interpret?

Hi Fernando,
Would be glad to help. Can you give me the error you're getting and also versions of other software installed - make,bison,flex, development system(if installed) ?
I suspect the --with-apache=/usr/local/apache/bin/httpd directory is not right unless this is where you have tar'd Apache source to, it should be the top-level directory i.e. /usr/local/apache. I'm also assuming you wish to build php as a module and not cgi.
I have attached a script buildphp3.sh which you could have a look at and modify - you'll have to add the --with-mysql bit in there. I usually compile with Informix but have taken this line out for you.
I have a directory /usr/src. in this directory is the buildphp3.sh script. Also I have the apache_1.3.12.tar and php-3.0.15.tar files. In the script, modify the first couple of lines to which versions you are installing, and the directory you wish Apache to be built to. It is set to /usr/local/apache at the moment(I think?) - it will tell you.
Make sure you're in the /usr/src directory and then run the script using ./buildphp3.sh (make sure you set the file as executable).
The script will tell you which versions it is about to install and the directory apache will be built in. It will also advise to shutdown your existing httpd if running.
It removes the apache & php directory (if previously there) to ensure a clean install. You can normally just 'clean' the install using if bison/flex are installed (As I learnt the hard way), but I use the 'delete everything' method just to be sure. It takes a little longer to build but it's not like you're going to run this often - unless you're trying to install php4, but that's a different story. Anyway, I'm babbling.
After removing the directories it un-tar's the source files into their respective directories.
It then configures Apache. Don't worry about any flash settings here it will be re-configured.
Php is then configured. (add the --with-mysql and --with-xml or whatever here).
Php is then made (I use the GNU make - gmake version 3.78.1, you can get this from www.sco.com skunkware section. Get the 'dist' version as it has been pre-compiled).
Php is then installed (copies relevant files to where they should be).
Apache is then configured.
Apache is then made.
Apache is then installed. You have the option to abort at this stage in case you wish to copy the binary to your apache/bin/ directory if you have it already set-up. I would carry on and install if I was you. If you already have anything of value in /usr/local/apache then back it up first!
The script will advise to copy the php .ini file to /usr/local/lib and configure /usr/local/apache/conf/httpd.conf where required.
To start your new toy, just run /usr/local/apache/bin/apachectl start
This works fine on my machine with gcc 2.95.2, gmake 3.78.1 SCO 5.0.4 + dev system(if you do not have this I think you need to install just the library files from the CD - you don't require a license for this).
If you still have problems, perhaps we can go through it step by step.
Regards, Paul

Hi Paul,
I wish you can give me a hand with PHP3. I've been desperately trying to compile PHP 3.0.15 on OpenServer 5.0.0 with no success at all. I'm on gcc 2.95.2 Though ./configure --with-mysql=/usr/local/mysql \ --with-apache=/usr/local/apache/bin/httpd \ --with-xml

Crashed MySQL or MySQL not started on this host, or MySQL server running on different socket from which PHP expects (on my system its in /var/lib/mysql - so could well be this).

http://www.freshmeat.net/appindex/1998/12/14/913658781.html ist a command line client driving a modem to deliver SMS to many mobile operators.
I tried that one yesterday and was able to call it from within PHP and deliver SMS into German D1 and D2 networks.

PHPLIB does no checks at all. Instead, the session id is a 128 bit random number. The session id space is extremely sparsely populated, and it is highly improbable that there will be a collision between two starting sessions.
PHPLIB is not using sequences at all, because sequence are predictable and a session id MUST NOT be predictable.

It depends on protocol supported by remote server. Usually is used HTTP protocol with POST method. Then you must send sometnig like this to remote server
POST /script/uploadxml.cgi HTTP/1.0 Host: remote.server.com Content-type: text/xml Connection: close
<document> ... </document>
It also good to include header Content-Lengt ans set it to the length of sended data.

I've already tried the command mysql_connect("localhost", "root", "");
But the browser showed me the same error.
I don't know if the problem is that, but in the file php3.ini the extension dir must contain the directory in windows format (for example: c:\php3\) or in the server format (//localhost/php3/)?

Hi there,
I am using PHP4 sessions but have a problem with session.lifetime. Previously I have set session.lifetime in php.ini but somehow my sessions seem to ignore this setting (havent really checked it since upgrading to PHP4 beta 4).
In the release notes for PHP 4.0 beta 4 it states "- Added session_set_cookie_params () function. (Andrei)", but I have been unable to find documentation for this function at www.php.net.
My question is: does sessions now ignore the session.lifetime setting in php.ini, and if so - how am I supposed to specify session lifetime through the session_set_cookie_params () function.

Hi everyone,
Have any of you compiled PHP4 on SCO Unix (5.0.4) ?
If so, could you let me know exactly how you did it (Software installed/version etc). I can compile PHP3 + Apache + Informix now very easily but PHP4 is breaking when I try to 'make'.
Any help/inspiration would be gratefully received.

Hi
I am trying to display a record from a table where an id num from two tables exist. All I want is what is in that record. From the following code the table1_field is displayed not just for that record which I want but is displaying the value of that field for the whole database.
$result = mysql_query("SELECT table1_field FROM table1, table2 WHERE table1.table1_id = table2.table2_id"); $total_rows = mysql_numrows($result); $counter = 0;
while($counter < $total_rows): echo "<TR><TD>"; echo mysql_result($result,$counter,"table1_field"); echo "</TD><TD>"; $counter = $counter + 1; endwhile;
I hope this makes sense!!!
TIA

This will display all entries whose IDs exist in both tables. To display only a particular record with Id='$id' add an AND clause
SELECT table1_field FROM table1, table2 WHERE table1.table1_id = table2.table2_id AND table1.table1_id='$id'

Hello, I have a problem:
My site needs an index.htm page to get started. any ideas on how I can get a http_referer to let me know where someone came to my site from?
I cannot put the http_referer variable on my index.htm page (it will not parse php) and if I put it on any subsequent page then I get the last pages address in the http_referer variable (which will be an address from my own site)
please help and thank you in advance... ramon. ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com
attached mail follows:
You CAN get php to parse the index.htm - there are two ways
In the Apache (I'm assuming you're using Apache) conf file you can setup the default document to be
index.phtml
and rename your file to
index.phtml
..or..
add .htm to the list of documents which are processed by PHP (again in apache.conf) The first method is preferable, as you may have some plain HTML files which DON'T need to be processed.
Hope this helps...

If you are running as an Apache module, you can't. You could install the cgi version of PHP and run it under suExec to do this.

Change the perms on the file.

But why? this is a very bad way to solve a problem on your system as it leaves your security wide open.

Try creating an RTF file.
Use your favorite word processor to create a template RTF file containing dummy labels in the exact format you want. Save as an RTF file, which is really just a fancy ASCII file with formatting encoded in. Bring up the RTF file in an ASCII editor like Notepad or vi. Hack away at it, adding PHP code until it generates your data. Send it out with Header("Content-type: text/x-rtf"); (or your favorite way of specifying RTF in MIME). Then the user can import the document into his favorite word processor and print away. It's not PDF, but it's good enough for many applications.

Subject: populating menus
Is there a way to populate options in one drop-down menu based on selected option from the previous menu?
-- Bojan Gajic NewsI*Net http://www.inet.co.yu
attached mail follows:
this comes up often, maybe it should be in the FAQ...
You make a javascript with a two dimensional array populated with what you want in the <SELECT>s. In the first <SELECT> you have an ONCHANGE tag that runs the script, the script reads the contents of the first <SELECT> and fills in the desired choices for teh second <SELECT>.
Note1: You must have as many <OPTION></OPTION> pairs as you will ever need in the second box. There is no way to resize a <SELECT> without reloading the page.
Note2: This only works with javascript browsers. And for that matter, IE4 (and probably 5) doesn't support all the properties and methods that javascript books say it should.

JavaScript. Here is a related article, it's dated, but still relevant. http://www.webreference.com/javascript/960902/select_boxes.html

I am writing a short script and everytime I run it I get the following error: Fatal error: Cannot redeclare error_handler2() in d:\webroot\php-bin\student_services\ftappt2.php3 on line 2

<? function Error_handler2($msg, $connection) { echo " $msg \n"; odbc_close($connection); exit(); }

if ( $Availible == 'Yes' ) { //Tests $Availble to = Yes before writing to the browser $ApptTime = odbc_result( $request, 2 ); // if Yes, then scans Slot field for record and assigns it to $ApptTime echo "<option value=\"$ApptTime\">$ApptTime<option>"; //Writes $ApptTime to the browser. OK, this was the my biggest PHP nightmare on final stage of a project. How did I solve it ?
The problem seems to be the type of the fields in the table you're accessing. Never use 'nvarchar' if the database comes from an Access migration.
You have 2 possibilities:
- Use varchar data type. - Create the database in your SQLServer and only import the data with DTS functionality.
This would have to solve it. Don't hesitate to mail me (in spanish or catalan if you want) and talk about this issue.
THANK YOU.

Over the last few monthes I have been using PHP with MySQL and it runs fine. Most of our production databases are oracleEE. If I run phpinfo() and do not see any oracle extensions..does that mean that Oracle support is not installed..?

You must recompile PHP with --with-oracle option.

First guess:
You are not escaping any potential dodgy characters and as image (I assume from context) is a binary field, chances are it may contain said dodgy characters.
You need to escape them with (and it's a good idea to do it for ALL text fields you are inserting/updating):
$field=str_replace("'", "''", $field);
and If I remember correctly - late in the day - no coffee :-/
$field=str_replace("/", "//", $field);
Hope this helps...

PHP4 will include support for this. (It includes it now, but it's in some flux at the moment.)

Hey php guru's
I need to create a chunk of code that will select a range of dates from a data file . My question is " Has anybody seen a sample of this done somewhere on the net, or is there a special module or function that I may have overlooked ?"
this is what the data looks like;
03/06/00 16:59:35 cisco4.dodo.com 1107.64 03/07/00 17:01:23 cisco4.dodo.com 1049.74 03/08/00 05:01:21 cisco4.dodo.com 1038.44 03/09/00 05:01:21 cisco4.dodo.com 1038.44
I want to be able to say "give me all of the data from 3-7-00 to 4-12-00".
It may take me week to write this so thats why I'm asking for a few beginning steps.

$fp=fopen($filename,"r"); $rec=fgets($fp,120); while(!feof($fp)){ $recs=explode(" ",$rec);
if(($recs[1] >= $from) & ($recs[1] <= $to)){ echo $rec; } $rec=fgets($fp,120); } fclose($fp);
I haven't check the code for any syntax error or anything, this is just barebone you can develop on this. What I am trying to do here is to check the dates as if they are string. String comparision of date work same way as the normal date comparision. Another option is not to use the explode' but use the sub string fuction.

I would write a little function that converts the dates/times into a timestamp field (for whatever database) as it is populating the database from the text file.
Then you can just use MySQL or whatever DB you're using's built in time/date functions to do you queries.
You could certianly write something that parses that field and checks to see if it is within your range, and it probably would only take you an hour or two... but you're going to run into performance problems probably if its a large dataset. You'll be better off letting the database do all the hard work.

Hi Dave,
I am not sure but I think, you can not use the fuctions on the where. Try the following query
select field_name1, now() from table where field_check => 2
or try this, if you don not want the current timestamp to appear in the selected columns,
select * from table where field_check => (select now() from dummy_table)
In the second option, there must be only one row.

Could someone with ASP experience contact me privately? I have a stupid question on ASP and I can't find any resources to help me out. It's a basic question on doing a query with a join, I can't output the results.

Ignoring the second function call, could someone tell me if I'm on the right track with storing a image in a MySQL DB??
Here's the link to the source: http://www2.CSUinternet.net/~brownj/test.phps
I can't figure out what's going on... (I've got the book "Professional PHP Programming" ordered). I've read the "PHP3 - Programming Browser-Based Applications" book but the MySQL sections are lacking a bit with regards to the relationship between PHP and MySQL but other than that it was good reading :o)
Here's how the DB is set up:
id INT(255) DEFAULT '0' NOT NULL AUTO_INCREMENT, Large_Image_Data BLOB DEFAULT '' NOT NULL, Small_Image_Data BLOB DEFAULT '' NOT NULL, Image_Name CHAR(255) DEFAULT '' NOT NULL, PRIMARY KEY (id)
One of the things I'd really like to be able to do is to display a retrieved DB image without having to write it out to a file but I haven't been successful with that yet :o(
Any help would be appreciated :o)
TIA

Has ANYONE gotten this to compile? There are no instructions, there is no README, the web site says nothing about it, and it's reporting unresolved externals that I can't find in *any* of the PHP source. I've been poring over it for four days, I asked on the list about the specifics two days ago, and since I've gotten nowhere and heard nothing -- I'm wondering if anyone has *ever* compiled mod_php under Win32. I've compiled PHP itself without the slightest trouble, and likewise Apache and the distributed mods, but the mod_php compile isn't working at all and I have absolutely *no* idea what could be causing it. Something is either getting left out of the link stage, or there are some #define requirements I missed. Has everyone else just given up and used the CGI version?
attached mail follows:
Caliban,
Just so you know that we're listening...
All my clients on NT are intranet/low volume only ... so I use CGI all the time. That and the fact that I'm not likely to carry around and install a VC++ install to all my clients ...
Just another reason why I like the *nix's, I know the tools are there, how to work them and while ./configure - make - make install is a *little* more complex than clicking on setup.exe things just work better when the code is built on and for your system. Anything serious, put it on *nix.
End of soapbox mode.

Hi all,
I am a newbie and would like help on displaying a LIMIT ed number of records. For example, I have 900 records that meet a query and only want to display 200 at a time so as not to discourage the users with slower connections to the net.
SELECT * FROM database WHERE field='example' LIMIT 0, 200 SELECT * FROM database WHERE field='example' LIMIT 200, 200
and so on.......
My questions is how can i make a link to query the next 200 records so the
user can click a
"next" link to view the next 200 records and so on and so on down the line.
Any help would be great.

I am attemepting to get a two dimensional array to work correctly and am having problems.
while( list($k,$v) = each($data1)) { $records = explode (",",$k); $rec = $records[0]; $fld = $records[1]; $myusers [$rec][$fld] = $v; printf ("record %s,elements %s, data %s<BR>",$rec,$fld,$v); } array_dump ($myusers);
The above code seems to only work intermittantly.
What happenes is that the $myusers '[$rec][$fld] = $v;' does not get the proper data put into the array. The printf line show me that all the elements are there and in the proper place. But the array_dump routine shows that many elements are missing. Its intermittant as to when which elements are missing.
The $rec is a integer ranging from 0-x, and $fld is a field name for a database. EG. first_name, last_name. $v is the contents of the data from a form.
NOTE: the probelms is not in the array_dump routine as this code has not failed me yet includeing the debugging of other parts of the page.
attached mail follows:
Hmm, it would be helpful to see how $data1 is contructed ... but right off the bat it seems funny to me that you are 'explode()'ing the key ($k) instead of the value ($v);
