I am having a major problem. When you go to run the script from the browser
it will just sit there and continue loading but it does not finish it gets
stuck in the while loop. I have attached the code that is causing me the
problem. If anyone has any feedback I would greatly appreciate it. I am
connecting to a SQL server using the odbc functions.

If you need any other info please ask. Any help would be greatly appreciated
and thanks in advance.

It look likt you didn't change rownumbers $i in your while statement. so script always fetch same row records, dead loop appears.

Increase $i in your while loop!

Since joining this list, I have started getting *HUGE AMOUNTS OF SPAM*. Is the 'who' function disabled?

I also keep getting bounces from expired accounts when I post to the list.

The list is a valuable resource, but its becoming expense to use!

You may do

if ($colors) { for ($x=0;$x<count($colors)-1;$x++) echo $colors[$x]. ", "; echo $colors[$x]; }

so the last echo is out of the for, that's why you get out of it at count-1.

hope this works for you

Hello all,

Thanks to all for previous help. Now, I have just one more thing to fix in selecting multiple colors on my html form. On the results page this works nicely.

if ($colors) { for ($x=0;$x<count($colors);$x++) { echo $colors[$x]. ", ";

As you can see, all the multiple selections are nicely separated commas. However, it would be nice if I didn't have a comma at the end of the list because now it prints

Favorite color(s): Red, Orange, Blue, / / final comma

But I want

Favorite color(s): Red, Orange, Blue / / no final comma

I've fiddled around to try to make it work, but is there a not-to-complicated way to do this ?

TIA, Margie

Thank you, Jorge.

It is working as I wanted it. Thank you everyone for your suggestions. It is helpful to see different approaches to one problem.

I think you have the code mixed up or I gave it to you wrong :)

Here is what it should look like:

echo ( "<B>Your Favorite Color(s): </B>" );

if ($colors) { for ($x=0;$x<count($colors);$x++) { if(($x+1) >= count($colors)) { echo $colors[$x]; } else { echo $colors[$x]. ", "; } } }

Notice the open bracket after the else statement. That was missing from your code below. Also, I don't think I put a "$" before the variable x when doing the if statement. Sorry.

That should work.

instead of converting it to array, you can use ereg_replace function.

have a look at http://www.php.net/manual/function.ereg-replace.php3 Anyway, all string variables are already an array.

Unfortunately, ODBC isn't really applicable in my situation... I'm sure ODBC would work well, yes, but my purpose for needing to access PostgreSQL natively is so that I can develop locally on my Windows machine, and then copy the final result straight to the Unix Apache/PHP3/PostgreSQL server my scripts are destined for.

Anyway, I've hunted in the mailing list archives and found several old threads that seem to give the impression that all you need to do to use the pg_xxx() functions is to get a copy of libpq.dll from the PG Win32 client distribution (which I have) and enable it as extension of PHP3 in the .ini file. Is this true?

I don't know but I kind of doubt it, I would assume that PG has to be compiled into the win32 binary, like --with-postgres. An I don't know if there are any issues with doing that. If you look at phpinfo() it would say which things are compiled in.

But I don't know so try what you saw in the posts, change the .ini and get the dll.

Hello,

are there any security problems with php3? I mean - how secure is php? I heard someone saying its very unsecure??? Can you tell me more?

Matjaz

attached mail follows:

It's designed to be more secure than other common cgi languages. Because other languages such as perl were designed primarily for other purposes they do not have the safety features built in that php does. php was designed as a web scripting tool and it's security model was designed with that in mind.

still php can only be as secure as your web server.

whoever you overheard saying that php is 'very unsecure' either doesn't know what he/she is talking about, or is the kind of person who throws a fit over having to attach a computer to a network because of the all the security problems.

SSL will be handled by the web server, if the web server is a secure server. php traffic, like all other http traffic, is encrypted while running under a secure server.

I don't know what security benefits require() and include() give.

The security enhancements php offers are, unless I'm mistaken, all selected and configured at compile time. There's securety info at the php.net site.

Hi, I just posted this messages to have it archived. I found a solution for a problem with odbc. It was not possible to retrieve the primary key, dec point, default value, not null information and so on with standard php commands. I tried several things out, and I think that it´s not possible with an unified call to retrieve this info. Searching a lot in the Adabas Docs revealed me to do a select this way:

select pos,columnname,mode,datatype,len,dec from columns where tablename='$source_table' order by keypos

simple, not? that works with adabas, I do not know if other dbs will do so

greets, andré

Hello,

I am just learning PHP, but seem to have a good grasp on the the concepts and I want to use PHP to program a new project in our office.

We want to setup a database to be our rolodex for clients, track our time sheets, and tally up all of the time spent on a client among all users that have worked on that client and print out a "Total hours worked" sheet for each client.

I know this is a simple database, but it is kind of like combining 3 databases together. Can PHP do something this?

How can I use what we have to achieve this type of database.

We have a NT 4.0 server and will be running everything off of it. We have MS Access as a database on there now. Will PHP work with Access or will we need to use other software?

Suggestions welcome.

How can I use what we have to achieve this type of database.

We have a NT 4.0 server and will be running everything off of it. We have MS Access as a database on there now. Will PHP work with Access or will we need to use other software?

Suggestions welcome.

Your help is appreciated.

PHP can do this no problem. You should think about looking into projects people have already started that are similiar to yours. Check out the http://www.php.net/projects.php3 page on the PHP.net site.

All,

I have just started using the Wrox "Professional PHP Programming" book and have attempted to run some of the intro/simple scripts both on the server at my job and on another server I have access to.

In both cases, my attempts to run the scripts yield an error 405, method POST not allowed.

What would the reason for this be, and can I remedy it w/o having to ask busy sysadmins for favors? If not it isn't a big deal, since I'm running Linux/Apache/MySQL at home.

Thanks for any insight or advice.

Hi all,

I am running into some database difficulty and am in desperate need of assistance ... !

I am trying to run a stored procedure from Sybase using an ODBC connection. The SP has two output variables. When I run the same SQL code (obviously with the appropriate values) from an ISQL window, I receive two results, one returns no rows, and the other returns the desired values. When I try to run the SP using the following code, I can only retrieve the result that returns no rows. I am guessing that I need to use the odbc_prepare function, but I cannot find good enough documentation to tell. Maybe I need do this as a transaction ??? how ??? Any help would be greatly appreciated ...

<% $connection_id = odbc_connect("TEST", "user", "password");

$query = "DECLARE error_hdr varchar(50), error_msg varchar(255)\n". "EXEC sys_com_err_msg_sp\n". "err_key = \"$error_key\",\n". "err_code = $error_code,\n". "err_level = \"$error_level\",\n". "hdr = error_hdr output,\n". "msg = error_msg output\n". "SELECT error_hdr, error_msg";

$result_id = odbc_exec($query); odbc_result_all($prepare_id, "border=1 width=90%"); odbc_close($connection_id); %>

Hi, I need some basic help with filemtime(). Just for background, I am running the PHP 4.0b4pl1 as an Apache module on a RH 6.0 Linux machine. I call this routine and print the result with the following code fragment:

$last_backup = filemtime("/sysback"); echo "The last system backup was performed on $last_backup";

The output that I see is:

The last system backup was performed on 952631687

My problem is that I don't know what format filemtime() returns (it is obviously not 3/2/00 9:55:11), and I cant find this info in the PHP documentation. Can anyone tell me how 952631687 relates to a human-readable date/time stamp?

It's a unix time stamp. It represents the number of seconds since Dec. 31, 1969.

Look up the date() function to see how you can output the results how you want.

I dont know mysql but the SQL statement to create a view is

create view MYVIEW (MYCOL1, MYCOL2, MYCOL3) as select COL3, COL9, COL23 from MYTABLE where COL7='abc';

Enter that in your sql monitor or whatever, where MYVIEW is the name of the view, MYCOL is the name of the columns in the view. The select statement can be any normal SQL select. Cheers Tyrone

I believe in the very latest version of mysql you can create a temporary table. The table is only visible by the connection that created it, and the table is destroyed when the connection disappears. I guess that would be a cursor, right? not a view. as far as I know mysql has no support for views, but this cursor could be a very good half step in that direction.

It's done with the create table command. a select clause has been added to the end of the create table command also, so the table can be populated at the same time it's created.

I think this feature is more for sub selects. Views are more permanent structures. You can read in the manual 5.4.6 that mysql doesn't support views but it is on the TODO list.

Hi folks,

Does anyone know how I would go about creating a CRC of a given string and a given file?

I would like to be able to save a CRC of a URL and a CRC of the page represented by that URL to my mysql database. This can then be used to determine if the URL has changed and if the file contents of the webpage have changed. I have not found a function for this, and do not know the algorithm that would be required to do this. I understand that CRCs can be calculated at varying levels of detail - I would prefer the greatest reasonable level to ensure that it is least likely that I will end up with duplicate values on different pages or URLs.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

I am using PHP v3.015 with Apache 1.3.9 on FreeBSD 3.4 if that has any bearing on the issue (at least without checking I believe these are correct - I did not set up the server).

Hi all,

I'm using PHP 3.0.14, Linux 2.2.13 and Apache 1.3.9.

Configuration: ./configure '--with-apxs' '--with-shared-apache=/home/httpd' '--with-apache=/home/httpd' '--with-gd=no' '--with-oracle=/home/oracle/product/8.0.5' '--with-config-file-path=/tmp/apache' '--enable-safe-mode=yes' '--with-exec-dir=/tmp/apache' '--enable-track-vars=yes' '--enable-magic-quotes=yes' '--enable-debugger=yes' '--enable-force-cgi-redirect=yes'

Oracle is in WinNT4.0 Server. PHP is using OCI8 to access Oracle.

When selecting columns that have more than "X" chars on its name, the result is truncated. Sometime nothing returns in such column.

Executing the same query in PLSQL all works fine...

What is the best way to work (in PHP) with the result from a Query?

OCIFetch/OciResult, OCIDefineByName or OCIFetchStatement?

Thanks in advance,

Anybody know if it is possible to call a predefined function from a hypertext link? onClick or something of the sort?

I think I am just going to have to put the functionality in a new php document...

Thanks.

Hi all,

I finaly could compile php 3.0.15 with mcrypt support and get it running without core dumps. I followed a note on the PHP site's mcrypt reference where it says to compile php 3.0.15 with libmcrypt 2.2.6 it should be compiled with --disable-posix-threads.

Thanks, Roberto.

Anyone tried this configuration yet? Any opinions on how well (or not) it works? I just got an Oracle8i CD-ROM (Developer license) and am itching to try it out. Thanks! Geordon VanTassle, MCP
