Not exactly. Patents can be mistakenly awarded for technology already
being used by others. For example, the use of technology to easily check out
a shopping cart, which amazon claims they invented. Patents have been
awarded for "found" technology, as in the case John Moore, who donated
his cancerous spleen, and then discovered his own *DNA* had been
patented.... by somebody else. He had to take them to court to claim
ownership of his own DNA!. (An example of how absurd the US patent
system has become, ownership or originality is no longer required...
there are currently 38,034 DNA patents)
The current system is a far cry away from the fair governing body you
make it out to be. It has problems, indeed, *Beezos* notes that there are
problems with it. He has said that he thinks patents like his should only
be enforceable upon for a "much shorter lifespan than the current 17 years
-- I would propose 3 to 5 years", which means he should have given his patent up
*already*.
Appl. No.: 928951
Filed: September 12, 1997
That was over three years ago.
This smacks of the lowest form of hypocrisy to me.
> If you don't agree with the patents that were awarded you should have
> complained with the patent office. Before a patent is awarded there is a
> comment period.
No, not really. Beezos has suggested one, but patents are usually issued
without all affected parties knowing about it. Did you know that if you
manually adjust color on your monitor, to match your inkjet printer,
you are violating a patent (Owned by Radius, Inc.)? How about storing
a shopping cart in a cookie, that you use as part of your web pages?
(Sun owns that one, #5,745,681). Go take a look through uspto.gov. (I
wouldn't be surprised if their own site could be accused of violating
several patents....)

> http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/subst/misc/patents.html
That's "argued" case by case. Amazon has to prove that their patent is
applicable, and they will most likely loose. Often. The prior art is
out there, in early point-of-sale systems.
> To me this means that they will only sue direct competitors that are

So: Don't make a PHP website that may sell books?
Amazon owns the patent to buy things, with one click, over the internet,
Patent #5,960,411.
Really.
What else is owned? Using the internet to track customer info so you can
offer rebates, Patent Pend. #783372, using URL's to cross-link sales,
#6,029,141...
The US patent system hasn't kept up with current technology for years.
#6,029,141, which basically means that banner ads are now patented, came
a _long_ time after banner ads were in public use....the problem is
that they are abusing the system, which was designed to protect innovation
of small business, of home inventors, so big, monolithic, companies
couldn't steal their ideas. Not so big monoliths could use legal strongarm
tactics to suppress valid competition.

Question,
I was wondering what the best way to completely destroy a Discussion group was, Oh never mind I'll ask Joni. ;-)
Is my email down or something I haven't received an email from the PHP group in ages.
I do have a serious question.
Does any one know when the MS SQL Server Library for PHP4 will become available. I know that mySQL will communicate with PHP4 with ease but some of us still have to use the systems in place which in our case is MS-SQL 7. As PHP4 is at release candidate 1 it wont be long before support for PHP3 will be gone so it would be nice to know.
Thanks in advance.
Andy.

We use freeTDS to connect to MS SQL 7.0 we have it working from
PHP Version 3.0.15 & 4.0b3 (soon to try with the newest), on Redhat
Linux 6.1 the URL is:
http://www.freetds.org/ Check it out, I'll recommend it, I have to use
the sybase functions but what's in a name.

Does anyone have some expirience with PHPLIB and sybase ? I installed it on RH6.1 but I can't get example to work. The only I receive is:
Warning: Uninitialized variable or array index or property (sid) in /home/httpd/php/session.inc on line 397
Warning: Uninitialized variable in /home/httpd/php/session.inc on line 97
I did what is mentioned in documentation. I customized local.inc and setup.inc. Where should I look for errors ?

attached mail follows:
Hi, I'm compiling php on RH 6.1 Intel and I choosed to use sybase library. I compiled using:
./configure --with-apxs=/usr/sbin/apxs --with-xml --with-pgsql=/usr/lib/pgsql -with-sybase-ct=/usr/local/sybase --with-ftp --with-gd
(ctlib is installed in /usr/local/sybase)
the compilation works fine and also the installation but when I start the http daemon to load the new module I get:
Syntax error on line 247 of /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf: Cannot load /etc/httpd/modules/libphp3.so into server: /etc/httpd/modules/libphp3.so: undefined symbol: sybaction
well if I do ldd on the module I get:
ldd /etc/httpd/modules/libphp3.so libgd.so.1 => /usr/lib/libgd.so.1 (0x4013b000) libttf.so.2 => /usr/lib/libttf.so.2 (0x40172000) libpq.so.2.0 => /usr/lib/libpq.so.2.0 (0x40187000) libgdbm.so.2 => /usr/lib/libgdbm.so.2 (0x40193000) libpam.so.0 => /lib/libpam.so.0 (0x40199000) libm.so.6 => /lib/libm.so.6 (0x401a1000) libdl.so.2 => /lib/libdl.so.2 (0x401bd000) libcrypt.so.1 => /lib/libcrypt.so.1 (0x401c1000) libresolv.so.2 => /lib/libresolv.so.2 (0x401ee000) libc.so.6 => /lib/libc.so.6 (0x401fd000) /lib/ld-linux.so.2 => /lib/ld-linux.so.2 (0x80000000)
and if I use nm I get:
nm /etc/httpd/modules/libphp3.so | grep sybaction U sybaction
any suggestion? it seems that sybaction _is_ in the module...
thanks, Blackdir

Hi, I have my Oracle server running in Sun Solaris. Now I want to setup Apache Web server running on Windows NT system with PHP. How I'm going to using PHP to access remote Oracle database from Sun Solaris ? What component I need to be installed in my Window NT other than Apache and PHP ? (May be ODBC ?)
As I know for Apache web server where running in Redhat, in order my PHP can accessing to remote Oracle database, I need to install Oracle client on my Linux server and then recompile PHP. But how about if I running on Windows NT environment ?
Thank in advance.

Hi List..
I am back again..
Had a small break..... Just using php with Ms access for a change in Windows NT platform. I am in a Windows box where I have to use Ms Access for the database interactivity with PHP.
Just need of small odbc help. That's all. Just write me about the syntax and how far is it realiable with System DSN and File DSN. I came to know that I can't have a File DSN for using Ms Access with PHP. So I have decided to use only System DSN.
I have the machine (windows 95) with PHP and Ms Access. Just write me how to proceed and I shall be great to proceed with my works...
Thanks in advance..

Hi
Thanks, I actually already found that and was planning on incorporating it somehow. I now face the problem of converting .wmf files to .gif files. What would be great would be to do this as the file is uploaded (i.e. pipe the upload through a converter somehow) so the final result would be viewable immediately. Can anyone help me on this one? ----- Original Message ----- From: systems To: Jesper Hess Nielsen Sent: Wednesday, March 29, 2000 9:10 AM Subject: Re: [PHP3] Ideas for RTF/PHP3/HTML upload

I haven't tried it yet, but it looks cool! (html-mail = easy for mailnewbies?) Have you considered submitting a copy to http://phpclasses.upperdesign.com , to ease the search for phpclasses for addicted class users like myself? I know they already have some attachmentclasses etc, but I reckon they allow competing classes ;-)

G'day, I'm fairly new to this and I'm trying to get the current date from the MySQL server so I can seperate different dates into different tables. I have a fair idea of how to accomplish that but am having trouble getting the current date value out that I need. I'm probably doing something wrong that is really simple but have thrown myself in the deep end with MYSQL and PHP3 so I'm not so clued up on the easy stuff! :)
Below is my current code...
<? require("ini.php3"); $sql = new MySQL_class; $sql->Create("rirwin");
$result=MYSQL_QUERY("Select NOW()"); echo("Date is now $result");
?>
What I get back is
Date is now 2
Any help is very appreciated as I've already spent a couple of hours trying to get this out and it all seemed frustratingly simple when I started! :)

I seem to remeber reading somwhere that if MS IE gets a 404 header and the body that it retrieves is under x number of k's (i forget how many) it displays it own custom file not found page.
Also i wouldn't trust a meta tag for redirection as it is very client specific (as you may be finding)

My understanding is that the server has issued a 404, your script runs
ok, but the particular browser you mention has received the 404 error
header and decided not to display your custom output.
If you modify the header with:
header("HTTP/1.0 200 OK");
each time you want to display valid output, things may go better.
I don't like your idea of using the meta tag to call up the desired content as once again you are relying on the browser to do the right thing. Probably better to do, for example, header("Location: $go"). Though I am a bit hazy on exactly what happens in this case and am very much a novice in these matters, so beware!

Hey,
I am over these problems now... if youre doing it on your own server you can just change permissions for directories and your webserver can do everything.
But if you go and host your site somewhere you wont be allowed to use mkdir and many of other commands just like that. You will need to do it through cgi-bin scripts (and su-exec probably)... at least where I am hosting my site, they are very careful about permissions.

php works with all the servers you mention, so it depends on which one you have installed or want to install, for me it's easiest to install it on IIS (4 or 5 - they're almost the same) under windows NT/2k, but it's not much harder to make it working under Apache/Win (follow the CGI installation guidelines from the distribution) or PWS (the regfile for IIS 3 from the PHP distribution should do the trick here as far as i can remember). If you just want to begin learning and don't know Apache I'd suggest you to start the MS way. The recipe for IIS 4 and 5 follows:
Windows NT and IIS 4 To install PHP on an NT Server running IIS 4, follow these instructions:
1. In Internet Service Manager (MMC), select the Web site or the starting point directory of an application.
2. Open the directory's property sheets (by right clicking and selecting properties), and then click the Home Directory, Virtual Directory, or Directory tab.
3. Click the Configuration button, and then click the App Mappings tab.
4. Click Add, and in the Executable box, type: c:\path-to-php-dir\php.exe %s %s. You MUST have the %s %s on the end, PHP will not function properly if you fail to do this.
5. In the Extension box, type the file name extension you want associated with PHP scripts. (You must repeat step 5 and 6 for each extension you want accociated with PHP scripts. (.php3 and .phtml are common)
6. Set up the appropriate security. (This is done in Internet Service Manager), and if your NT Server uses NTFS file system, add execute rights for I_USR_ to the directory that contains php.exe.

And I thought there would be a simple answer...
The interval between successive new moons, mean value, is 29.53059 days, the actual value can vary between 29.25 and 20.75.
from: Norton's 2000.0 Star Atlas and Reference Handbook.
This might be pretty close...
$Phase = ((( time() - 938355283 ) % 2551443 ) / 1275721 ) - 1;
$Phase will be:
0 = new moon 1 = full moon
+ = waxing - = waning
For example:
New moon = 0 march 6 at 12:17 AM EST or 17:17 UT
waxing qtr = 0.25 around march 10
waxing half = 0.50 around march 13
full 1 march 21 at 11:39:00 full -1 march 21 at 11:39:01
waning half = -0.50 around march 28
Next new moon 0 april 5 06:39 UT
or from the mysql command line:
mysql> SELECT ((unix_timestamp( 20000122100000 ) - 938355283 ) > % 2551443 ) / 127572;
will return 1.00 because 2000-01-22 at 10:00:00 UT was a full moon.

Hi Folks,
Just out of curiosity, if you can generate a $Phase variable that represents the fraction of full the moon is, how would you then go about tying in this value to the fraction of a disk image generated?
I must admit I've not looked into gd at all; would this be a valid case to use it, and how?

I don't know whether it's possible, but does anyone have a solutions to this:
We have a mailinglist, in stead of inserting every mail hand by hand into the databank, we want to automate this.
Suppose I've got 1 emailaddie from the list, can I let all the mail that comes to that address be handled by a script which directly puts the mail into a MySQL database?
How does it happens in the PHP Mail Archives?

since strlen returns an integer you should compare it with another integer not with a char, do it this way:

I would do it like this
if(!isset($email_error)){ $len = strlen($password) ; if(($len < 4) || ($len > 10) ){ $error = "1"; $error_password_length = "<font color='#FF0000'>Passwords must be longer the 4 chars & less than 10 chars.</font><br>"; }

since strlen returns an integer you should compare it with another integer not with a char, do it this way:
if(strlen($password) > 3 && strlen($password) < 11){

You should know what you're asking. Javascript is client-side, so you can determine mouse buttons and mouse movements and other stuff like that. PHP is strictly serverside, so there's no way of determining wether the user farts during the time he views the webpage.
So yes.. you "can call javascript into php3" but you can only see the results of the scripts. It's like doing a dropdown which autosubmits.. you can see the submitted data, but not wether the user moused over the dropdown 15 times before he finally clicked it.

I saw few posts in the archive about the subject while I was strugling with it myself.
Below is a code snippet which works for me in both IE and Netscape. I haven't tried any other versions but IE 5 and Netscape 4.7 but this SHOULD =) work with other browsers too.
Here goes:
header('Content-type: application/RFC822');
if(ereg("MSIE", $HTTP_USER_AGENT)) {
header('Content-Disposition: attachment;filename="'.urlencode($filuname).'"');
} else {
header('Content-Disposition: attachment; filename="'.$filuname.'"');
}
readfile($filuname);
exit();
(sorry about poor alignment..)
Hope this helps some of you.

I have finally set up my PHP environment to run under windows NT workstation, with Apache. However, I don't know how to connect to the database of Interbase.

I have no really experience with IB under Windows and PHP, but AFAIK you should reference your database by this way
localhost:c:/km/km.gdb
Because IB library must know network address of server to connect.

Well my old host allowed this, but my new host doesn't. The old host was on an Apache server, while the new one is on NT. I chose the new host so I could develop ASP and PHP apps, but now I'm finding that alot of the things I could do on the old host I can't do now.
I haven't heard of this index.php3 issue before, and found it odd that there was an issue at all!

Well, the truth is I use my workstation as my server (no business sites, just some personal stuff). Depending on the httpd.conf you could / could not be able to set the DirectoryIndex directive in .htaccess.

Hi Andrew! Now you can really close this case, since I've found the solution. And it's a very funny one, heheh! First, I found the solution via Altavista, looking for "odbc_connection and example and DSN". One of the pages returned was: http://www.openlink.co.uk/info/docs/rel15doc/inglite/constring.htm This page has the solution: DSN=MarketingDB;INGNET= Marketing::mrktg; UID = Admin01; PWD=Admin01
The funny part is that you must put all this stuff in the first parameter of the php ODBC_CONNECT function, leaving the other two in blank, as in odbc_connect ( "DSN=database;UID=Username;PWD=Password" , "" , "" )
Very funny, isn't it? That's why programming is not for anyone, but for those who really love to mess around ;-)))
See you in the problem!!! Best regards, Andre' Felipe

Use that instead.You may need to change the sendmail'spath or the OS if you are in Windows:-)

Well, my setup is PHP 3.0.14 / MySQL 3.23.12 / Apache 1.3.11 on Win95.
Originally, I installed and configured using the php3.ini file. Now, I'm wondering exactly what needs to happen. Can you point me in the direction of what exactly I need to re-do or what is involved at this point? I couldn't find recompiling in the Manual, and I need step-by-step instructions.
(Hmmmmm, now I'm wondering if I should wait for php4...)
At any rate, I'd like to get going again with PHP / MySQL.
Thanks, Margie

Well, first of all, it may not matter - I don't know much about compatibility between the various versions of MySQL, but the first question is - does everything still work? If so, then you may not need to do anything. Unless your older libraries that PHP was compiled with are incompatible with the new version, then you probably can just use things as-is.
In any case, since you're using a precompiled binary distribution, and since the dev team has just completed Release Candidate 1, you may want to move to PHP4 at this point. Recently, they started including MySQL support into the base PHP package, so it should already be compiled with the latest MySQL libraries.

Ok, this is the same question I asked before, this time I'll include code and hopefully someone else can point out the problem..
$sCommand = "/usr/local/bin/grep -cr \"". strtolower($sRsearch1) ."\" /search";
exec($sCommand, $aGrep);
/* Executing this command on the command line returns well over 13,000 lines. OPnly 9000 are stored in the array for some reason */
reset($aGrep);
print "size before" . count($aGrep); /* This prints 9000*/
array_walk( $aGrep, 'test_alter' );
print "size after" . count($aGrep); /* This also prints 9000 */
The test_alter() function, it appears above the code listed in the script :
function test_alter( &$sTemp, $key) { print "foo"; }
"foo" is never printed, indicating to me that test_alter() is never run...
So. Can anyone see a problem that would cause array_walk to fail? I get no errors or warnings of any kind.
Thanks!

Hi
Has ne1 solved this question about eommerce : I'd like to sell everthing in a ebusiness web site... everything from cars to drinks. I'd like to have only one table to store these articles.
The problem is that each item has its own properties ! How to make something generic enough to manage every items/properties a store can contain ?
Thanx

I would advise against such an approach because it is unlikely that you will do a good job of retailing items if you try to force everything into a one-size fits all template. Many items have unique information fields that need to be associated with an item in an easily scannable manner. Real Estate for example requires that you tell us whether the house is 1 or 2 bedrooms, house or condo, etc... Cars require that you tell us model, make, year, color, etc... The presentation of this information is generally easier if you have specific fields highlighted with their values next to them. Your approach would require that this be done in a roundabout manner for each item.
If you really want to persist in this, then generic fields like title, picture, description and price will suffice for most item.

Good Day,
I am trying to create a script that will allow me to select multiple options (radio buttons). and display them in the new page.
This is the page that should show what ever I have selected on the previous page. This code works for one only.
<? reset ($HTTP_POST_VARS); while (list ($key, $val) = each ($HTTP_POST_VARS)) { $number = count($HTTP_POST_VARS); if ($number) { echo "<center><table BORDER=\"-3\" COLS=6 WIDTH=\"100%\"></center> <tr> <td><center>Hostname</center></td> </tr>"; mysql_connect("127.0.0.1","nazark"); $result = mysql_db_query("test","select * from chk_outages where\\ hostname=''$key");
for ($i = 0;$i < $number;$i++) { $a1 = mysql_result($result, $i, "hostname"); } reset ($HTTP_POST_VARS); while (list ($key, $val) = each ($HTTP_POST_VARS)) { echo "<tr> <td><center>$key</center></td> <td><center>$a2</center></td> </tr>"; } echo "</table>"; } } ?>
attached mail follows:
radio buttons do not allow multiple selections.

I recommend everyone in PHP to download plain HTML files with PHP documentation. Its a simple, very readable format. You have topics like: string functions, math functions, etc. You click one and you get all functions. Every function has a short description and sometimes even an example.
A must have!
PHP documentation online: http://php.net/manual/html/
You can download same documentation in TAR or ZIP: http://php.net/docs.php3
