Hello!
How can I perform file uploads WITH safe_mode restriction still being in
effect?
I always get following error message when I try to upload a file:
Warning: SAFE MODE Restriction in effect. The script whose uid is 500 is
not allowed to access /tmp/phpgBtP6M owned by uid 0 in
/home/mb/public_html/upload.php3 on line 2
Warning: fopen("/tmp/phpgBtP6M","r") - Inappropriate ioctl for device in
/home/mb/public_html/upload.php3 on line 2
How is the PHP module able to write files as root anyway?
Using PHP 3.0.15/apache 1.3.9/Linux 2.2.14.
Thanks in advance!

Hello,
I've posted a basic form-to-mail PHP3 script (with a guide) here:
http://www.openconcept.on.ca/guide-mail2form.phtml
However, one of the users of the site gave me the following feedback:
"It is common in form-to-mail scripts to check the referer before sending, and only allow email from referers in your domain, otherwise the script can be hijacked for spamming."
How do I update this PHP3 script so that it can't be used for spam?
Mike
ps. I've written some plain language guides to PHP3 not because I am an expert, but because I'm definately not an expert (like most web designers). However, I know that many basic functions can be implemented by web designers who are not also programmers.
also, please respond to this message via email ( Mike

) as I am having trouble reading the archived newsgroup. Thanks.

Mark,

The only thing that springs to mind is that Page B doesn't produce any output other than headers, the last of which should be a redirect. I'm wondering whether the set-cookie header is being lost when the redirect is generated?

Hi,
If you hit reload then the result is still the same. Am just putting in some code to get at the "raw" apache headers to see if there are any clues in there but it doesn't look good. I may need to rethink my whole design strategy... (pain in the a**).
I'm still thinking that the set-cookie header is being clobbered by the Location header somehow. It could explain this... but why should it clobber under Linux and not-clobber under W98? This is the baffling bit!
Cheers.

No - I just left those out to make a shorter list-posting. Here's the actual select code for that variable:

I would assume that it is as ever: microsuck shits on standards and simply don't follow them. probably unix does it right.
to help you out of this prob, include the page where you wan't to redirect to. should make no big difference in use.

All -
I've jumped into a project that I need some help with. Let me see if I can illustrate my sticking point and then any help at all would be appreciated. Just a point in the right direction would be fine if you don't have time for a full blown answer. Sample code would be great too.
Let's say you've pulled basic info from a table with PHP:
$result = mysql_query
"SELECT finish_names.finish_name FROM model, finish_names, model_finishes WHERE model.model_id = $model AND model.model_id = model_finishes.model_id AND model_finishes.finish_id = finish_names.finish_id" ) or exit ();
This particular query would return " Oak, Cherry Veneer", a two row table with only one column.
Now I want to use PHP to build a page that reads:
Available in Oak and Cherry Veneer.
I know I can create an array by invoking " if($row = mysql_fetch_array ($result)) and I know I can loop that to print " Available in Oak" and the next loop prints "Available in Cherry Veneer"
Where I'm stuck is - How do I assign individual variables to each of the two rows so that I can "paste" those cell contents where ever I want on the HTML page?
I'm obviously new to this, and so I've been staring at the books for two days now trying to figure it out, but I'm supposed to demonstrate this to a client tomorrow and I can't make it work!-- Tim Fields RGB Studios, Inc.

My code my have bugs but we'll see what I can do...
how bout this:
$fnames = array(); while ($row = mysql_fetch_array) { $fnames[] = $row["finish_name"]; }
$lastitem = end($fnames); reset($fnames);
echo Available in " . current($fnames); //write the first item. while ($fname = next($fname)) { //skip to the next item if ($fname == $lastitem) { //if it's the last item echo " and $fname"; //print "and". } else { echo ", $fname"; //othewise print "," and continue } } echo "."; //end the sentense.
This should cover whether you have one item, 2 or any number.

You can use javascript to do this. javascript works on the client side while php is a server-side preprocessor.

I always use MYSQL for my unix accounts, but I'm setting up a site on a windows account and I don't have access to SQL server at this time.
Should I go with MYSQL for windows? (is it free).
Or should use ODBC code and point it to an access database for now until I can upgrade to SQL server 7.0?
Speed and reliability are the two most important issues.
Any help appreciated? dgoa

It depends on the usage purpose currently. Have a look at http://web.mysql.com/Manual_chapter/manual_Licensing_and_Support.html

For Access you have to use ODBC's DSNs. I also hear Access can only handle 25 simultaneous requests, so serious sites would be better off developed with something more robust, like MS SQL server if you're on NT or MySql if you're on *nix, both of which have direct support through PHP.

Ok, I _know_ I must be overlooking something dumb, but here it is. I have a short, ultra-unsecured authentication script that I want to use (it'll improve in the future, but I want to make it go before I make it good). I'm not terribly familiar with PHP, although I've done some work in other environments. Here's the silly problem: I have the script, and it works fine when called on its own (as a *.php3 file). But if I embed it inside an HTML document, nothing happens. So, I have this:
[auth.inc]
//Check to see if the person is already logged in
if(!isset($PHP_AUTH_USER)) { //unset user causes login dialogue header('WWW-Authenticate: Basic realm="CS Inventory"'); header('HTTP/1.0 401 Unauthorized'); exit; } else if(isset($PHP_AUTH_USER)) { //check for match on database $db = pg_Connect("host=localhost port=5432 dbname=dbname user=reader"); if (!$db) { echo "No connection.\n"; exit; } else { $checkauth = pg_exec ($db,"SELECT * FROM dbuser where uname= \ '$PHP_AUTH_USER' and pass = '$PHP_AUTH_PW';") }
$auth_result = pg_NumRows($checkauth); if ((!$auth_result) || ($auth_result < 1)) { header('WWW-Authenticate: Basic realm="Realm"'); header('HTTP/1.0 401 Unauthorized'); echo 'Authorization Required.'; exit; } else { echo "<p>Authorization complete.</p>"; exit; } ?>
(The backslash after "uname =" is just a word-wrap indicator.)
Now, if I put this into an html file, or call it with include() or require(), nothing happens:
[test1.html] <?php include ('/home/ajs/php/auth.php3') echo "Is there any effect at all?\n" ?> Is it getting this far? </html>
That returns only "Is it getting this far?" (I also did it by actually reading the contents of the .inc file into the HTML.)
Other PHP pages are working, it seems. Any suggestions? I'm getting bleary-eyed and mush-brained, & I'm really puzzled. RTFM is fine, if you can point me at the right section. I've read everything I can think of on the matter, but I've obviously overlooked something.
Thanks, A

Or better yet, renamed the main file (the one with the include code) to a .php3 file?

Doh! What a dope! Yes, I had, but the last time I let apt-get upgrade by apache, I must've let the script overwrite my apache conf files. Well, chalk one up to a stupid day for Andrew. Thanks.

Easy to setup depends on what platform you come from. If you're an NT type, Access via ODBC is probably the absolute quick and dirtiest way to start, or on a Linux flavor, MySql is proably your best bet. The advantage to using something like MySql is that it is also very robust, and capable of handling enterprise loads. Whereas with Access, you'd probably want to graduate to MS Sql Server or something a bit tougher if/when your site gets a serious amount of traffic.
The way I'm developing now is with IIS4/PHP on NT and Mysql/Samba on Linux. I use Access for doing the data entry and DB design, then construct the same tables on the MySql box and do a text file dump over the network and upload them into MySql. The best of both worlds.

the first method to come to mind is to have the web directory (i'm assuming that's what your doing) on one box, and then have the other servers nfs mount that directory..
or you could write a script to copy all the files from a directory over to other machines every few minutes.. where you'd have a .shosts file that allows unpassworded/unpassphrased (a host + in the .shosts file) logins, and have the script do that (you could do it with rsync & rlogin instead of ssh but i wouldn't recommend it)..
or write an expect script to do the transfers every few minutes.. or have the other machines run rsync and use rsync -asr (I think) to sync up the directory every few minutes.. you could also do this with an rsync server (having the machine yuo're going to be doing the changes to run the rsyncd program and have the other machiens every few minutes rsync to that host and automaticalyl get a certain fileset) .. a lot of ways..
personally I prefer havnig one box setup for raid (a netapp is nice if you've got the budget) and mount it all from there..

Hi,
For some reason, the values returned from the SELECT statement are not being displayed. I cannot seem to track down what I am missing in my code.
I have tried putting in a $row=mysql_fetch_array($result); after the
$result = mysql_query($query);
and then referencing the information as $row["$FirstName"]; but that doesn't seem to work either, I get a "MySQL 0 is not a valid . . ." error.
Any help greatly appreciated.

I believe, if it is the same problem I had, it is in your MySQL install. The problem lies with the socket file it is looking for.
You need to make sure that the /var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock file exsists.
Check the mysql FAQ's as this is where you will find the answer you are searching for.

Try using EditPlus which is a rather light weight editor that recognizes php code. You will have to download the extension files for that from the editplus web site at http://www.editplus.com
Hope this helps...

Both Allaire Homesite 4.0 and CF studio whatever recognize php tags out of the box. For some reason though, you have to manually add the .php or .php3 extension to the list of recognized extensions or it bugs you everytime you try to open a php file.
I hadn't realized how much I relied on the color coded function names until I tried to write a script with a plain version of vi. It hurt my brain debugging it.

Not at all. Here it is. In this example I use four images: empty bar, quarter full bar, half full bar, and 3-quarters full bar. They are all 60x4 pixels. I don't use a full-bar image because the completion is apparent anyway as the page is fully displayed.
You can also use the window.status in pretty much the same way.
As you may notice, it really doesn't matter where the code occurs within the data, as long as you don't output anything, because you just change the source of an already rendered image. Just in case anyone worried about disrupting the table structure.
------begin example------ <html><head> <script type="text/javascript"> <!-- // declaration of the Image objects load0=new Image (60,4); load0.src="blank_bar.gif"; load1=new Image (60,4); load1.src="quarter_bar.gif"; load2=new Image (60,4); load2.src="half_bar.gif"; load3=new Image (60,4); load3.src="3quarter_bar.gif"; //--> </script></head> <body>
<!-- display the image: blank bar --> <img src="blank_bar.gif" width=60 height=4 name="bar"><br>
<!-- start the table --> <table ...>
<!-- ...big part with data... -->
<script> <!-- // load quarter full bar document.images["bar"].src=load1.src; //--> </script>
<!-- ...another big part with data... -->
<script> <!-- // load half full bar document.images["bar"].src=load2.src; //--> </script>
<!-- ...still more data... -->
<script> <!-- // load 3-quarter full bar document.images["bar"].src=load3.src; //--> </script>
<!-- ...some more data... -->
<!-- close the table --> </table>
<script> <!-- // load blank bar document.images["bar"].src=load0.src; //--> </script>
</body></html> ------end example--------

I'm having a problem running PHP interpreted files as CGI's under Windows. I'm using Apache 1.3.12 and PHP 3.0.15. I have correctly set a cgi-bin directory under the root directory of the served webpages. .BAT and .EXE files work fine if called from under cgi-bin, ie: http://localhost/cgi-bin/script.bat http://localhost/cgi-bin/script.exe
Any other types of files should work as long as I add the interpreter's path at the top using #! . Perl files work as well if I insert #!/path/to/perl.exe at the top of the .pl files.
I have even created a simple parser of my own which outputs to stdout anything that comes on stdin and files using this parser as the interpreter work as well.
Files that use #!/path/to/php.exe as the interpretor don't work, though. I also tried the -q option, no dice. Apache always reports error 500, and error log sais "premature end of headers". I suspect a newline character is somehow inserted before anything else.
I tried interpreting the PHP file (the one with #! on top) from the command line. If I use -q or -f, indeed, the output sports a nice newline at the very beginning, while running without switches comes out with PHP's own X-powered-by and Content-type correctly displayed as the first lines (not through Apache, though, I still get the same errors).

Hi,
I appear to be experiencing problems with Date calculations, now that that we are in Summer Time in England (i.e. the clocks have gone forward by 1 hour).
The code I am using is shown below:
$JoiningDate=mysql_result($result,$idel,"JoiningDate"); $CurrentDate= date("Y-m-d"); list($year, $month, $day) = explode('-', $CurrentDate); list($year1, $month1, $day1) = explode('-', $JoiningDate); $timestamp = mktime(0, 0, 0, $month, $day, $year); $timestamp1 = mktime(0, 0, 0, $month1, $day1, $year1); $Remain=(14-(($timestamp-$timestamp1)/86400));
How can I get around this?
I would appreciate any comments sent direct to me as I am set to Digest mode.
Many thanks Alexis

I actually posted a really pedantic message about daylight saving time last week :)
The gist was this: That if you do any calculations that assume all days are the same length (i.e. dividing by 86400) you will potentially start gaining and losing the odd hour.
You have a few options, but in this case the simplest thing is to stick with good old dark nights GMT all the way. Use gmdate() to get the current date and gmmktime() to make the timestamps. It doesn't matter if both dates are actually in BST or any other timezone, as you seem to be only calculating an integer value/

Hello all,
I work with PHP + PostgreSQL and now I'm looking for a new database server (more faster then PG). I think I have two choices: Sybase ASE 11.0.3 (freeware) or MySQL 3.23 (freeware). Which is the fastest? Sybase or MySQL? Any benchmark available or any other database server else (freeware, of course)?

If you are using MySQL, take a look at:
mysql_insert_id
mysql_insert_id -- Get the id generated from the previous INSERT operation
Description
int mysql_insert_id(int [link_identifier] );
mysql_insert_id() returns the ID generated for an AUTO_INCREMENTED field. This function takes no arguments. It will return the auto-generated ID returned by the last INSERT query performed.

My questions is about the article in phpbuilder.com cached dynamic modules
My problem is about the file it gets to parse, i mean it uses $DOCUMENT_ROOT . $REDIRECTION_URL, what i would like to do, is get the file from the user home. (using mod_userdir from apache).
Ex. if you try http://www.domain.org/~user what parser looks for, is for example /var/htdocs/~user , instead of looking for /home/user/public_html , i'm looking for another way, sure not using $DOCUMENT_ROOT , to geat the real "physic path" of the file. I'm sure there's a silly answer 'cause i haven't found any questions about it anywhere.
PD: I'v thought about parsing the url sent, and looking for home user, getting user information or reading from /etc/paswd directly, but
i think there should be a more common solution.
Excuse for my english. Please , also reply me any mail you could send about it.

I asked them three years ago about a PHP syntax module - they said at the time that it was impossible for others to build modules for BBEdit, and they wouldn't do it. But they said they were looking at a way of opening up syntax coloring in version 4 or 5, so users could build their own.
I no longer use a Mac much, but I do use VIM which I believe also runs on Mac. The syntax coloring is better. Until today the major thing missing was "Find Differences", but I found gvimdiff in the vim install. :O) Of course, it uses an expanded form of vi syntax and vi's worldview, so things are different from BBEdit.
If I were on a Mac I'd probably end up using both.

well a common reason is bugs. It's often wise to wait 6 months or so for any new software before you upgrade unless there is such a pressing need that you cannot wait. A common policy I use is to wait 6 months, the exception being major security fixes aor if we need functionality A right now and cannot wait.
If your running a beta for a prodcution server your opening yourself up for problems. Also not many "official" support channels support any form of betaware, im not talking about php specifically here just in general.
For personal use or testing beta is fine but for the stuff where downtime equals lost money i wait. You don't want that bug to pop up and cost you a whole bunch of money because it causes something to not work, opens you up to an attack or simple downtime. The scary thing is something not working 100% might not crop up initially and only be obvious after the fact when you cannot recover really.
Discretion is the better part of valor and all..

Well, in general it's just not a good idea to run non-release software on production systems. However, on occasion I break that rule, and this was one of those times. I installed PHP4 on my production server over the weekend because certain functionality was much more mature than it is in PHP3.
The decision should be purely objective. If you are not having any trouble with PHP3, and are not desperately in need of new functionality in PHP4, then you should wait. On the other hand, if you cannot wait for new functionality, or a particular feature you use in PHP3 is broken, then go ahead and try it. As always, do it on a development machine first, and try your existing code on it to make sure it doesn't break.

Right. The trade-off, then, would be between PHP parsing the extra information (big file) and the access system (DB or filesystem) getting it in. Big files/records == slower PHP parsing, fast reads. Small files/records == faster PHP, slower reads. The reason I framed it as a DB/filesystem question is that a lot of PHP functions are going to be smaller than the filesystem block size (esp. if using a huge disk with 16k or more blocks). Thus the DB is more appropriate (perhaps, there are other considerations like you brought up) for some of this code. Is the crossover point somewhere interesting though, do you think? Or is it big enough that you'd want to split up the PHP library files anyway long before you got there?
Also of interest, will this change between PHP3 and 4? 4 looks like it parses more up front, meaning it'd be nice to sheild it from functions that aren't going to be used (although pre-compiling would solve this utterly :-))

if your imap is being executed thru inetd then you will need to increase the maxium number of server instances that inetd can spawn within an interval of 60 seconds. for example if your inetd.conf looks like:
imap2 stream tcp nowait root /usr/sbin/tcpd /usr/sbin/imapd
then you will need to change it to:
imap2 stream tcp nowait.400 root /usr/sbin/tcpd /usr/sbin/imapd
that 400 in my example is the max number of server instances that I was talking about.. and if you don't specify it , it will default to 40. (which is very low for an well-loaded imap server). Do not use 400, put whatever you may think is appropiate for your load.
I hope this helps you. if not, check your imap and inetd logfiles to see what's going on.

Is this possible?
This is the scenario: There is a machine running a webserver. In the directory "files" in the doc-tree there is no index file, so that the contents are displayed when viewing this dir.
What I want to do, is connect to this machine (possibly by fopen!?) to http://machine/files/ and then read the contents to a variable. And then to change to the different sub-dirs and do the same.
If this is really not possible: how can I do it via FTP?

I'm not sure if I'm following you but I guess you want to use list all files/dirs of a tree where there are no index.html's if that's what you want.. and you are using apache put something like this on your httpd.conf:
-------- starts here ------- Alias /files/ /usr/doc
<Directory /usr/doc> Options FollowSymLinks Indexes order allow,deny allow from all </Directory> -------- ends here ---------
that will allow you to "browse" the dirs/files within http://your.machine/files/ but if you still want to make it on php (there's no need since apache and other webservers have that built-in) you can ask for it and I'll show you some php script I made that does that.

I'm using PHP 3.0.15 in Apache 1.3.12 as a DSO module on AIX 3.4. I've configured my php3.ini file adding the line: browscap=/w1/local/php/lib/browscap.ini and this is reflected when do a phpinfo().
Whenever I call get_browser(), Apache doesn't send any data with the document and in the error_log I get a line like: [Mon Apr 3 15:07:42 2000] [notice] child pid 30060 exit signal Illegal instruction (4)
I've looked in the PHP bug database and noticed quite a few open reports of get_browser() not working on various PHP releases and various platforms. I've added a report for my OS and software releases. I've noticed some people in the list archives say that you need to specify the browscap location in the php3.ini file and not in the Apache httpd.conf file, though this hasn't helped me.
My question is this: Does get_browser() work for anyone? If so, are there any tricks that need to be followed to get it to work?

Anyone out there know of a real estate application created with php3 and mysql? I want to write one, but don't want to re-invent the wheel.
thanks

Hi, i have two quick questions. i have this login page asking for username and password. 1. When a user proceeds to another page and presses the browser's "Back" to get to the login page, I wanted the login forms to be automatically cleared.
2. On some pages, when the user clicks on the "Back" button, I wanted it that the previous page cannot be displayed. What i did was vanish the "back" button with javascript code but i feel it isnt a nice solution.

Hello Stan,

I have written a small introduction to XML in the documentation of Metabase. Metabase is a DBMS independent PHP package install and access to SQL databases.
Metabase comes with a parser manager class that is able to interpert descriptions of database schema objects (tables, fields, indexes, sequences) that are defined in a custom XML format. A manager class is able to take on the parsed data and create the dcescribed database schema objects in any of the supported DBMS (MySQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle, etc...).
The manager class is also able to dump the schema and the contents of a database to a XML file in the same format, so you are able to move databases between distinct and capable DBMS, eventually from different vendors, without any loss of data or context.
The documentation of XML comes with a brief introduction to XML and also SML (Simplified XML). Metabase is available here:
http://phpclasses.UpperDesign.com/browse.html/package/20
Metabase needs the generic XML parser class:

well, thanks a lot! but, while 'cyradm' do not refuse me any more, authenticating is often failed. I think it's because of the less of 'pwcheck' process(I user Unix Shadow passwrod). So I run several 'nohup pwcheck &' and now everything is ok. thanks! > imap2 stream tcp nowait root /usr/sbin/tcpd > /usr/sbin/imapd > > then you will need to change it to: > > imap2 stream tcp nowait.400 root /usr/sbin/tcpd > /usr/sbin/imapd > > that 400 in my example is the max number of server instances that I was > talking about.. and if you don't specify it , it will default to 40.
