What version of php are you using?

I am using 3.0.12 and 4.0RC1, in both the semicolon before ?> is
optional.

From the php manual:

   php4-manual/language.basic-syntax.instruction-separation.html

================================================

Instruction separation

Instructions are separated the same as in C or perl - terminate each
statement with a semicolon.

The closing tag (?>) also implies the end of the statement, so the
following are equivalent:

<?php
    echo "This is a test";
?>

<?php echo "This is a test" ?>

This still doesn't work!!

The point is - all the other fields DON'T have a ; in this line and they all
work fine!!

The only one that doesn't store the values is when it is a text AREA and not
a text box!

Any other ideas??

THANKS

Andy

Try adding a call to phpinfo() in your program. This will include a list of every variable that is currently available to you from the web server. You should be able to find something in there that will work.

I tried to make work php with apache.

I have php-3.0.16.tar.gz and Apache-1.3.12-2.i386.rpm( devel and manual packages also I have). I'm using RedHat Linux 6.2. I compiled php in following way: ./configure --with-apxs=/usr/sbin/apxs --with-mysql --with-xml --with-ldap make make install

I enabled httpd.conf all necessary loadmodules and addmodules.

But when I tried to start httpd, it seems starts but when I see status it says "httpd is dead but subsys locked"

What should I do in this case? Also HTTPD complains in where mod_php and mod_perl are loading and adding.

thanks in advance,

Ganbold system engineer

Hello People,

Is there any other way to pass a variable from one file to another without using form or attachment to url? For example, I have a variable $array in file1.php3, which is an array, and I want to pass it to the next file called file2.php3.

How would I do this?

Thanks in advance,

Tony

One way, sit to make an include file, like common.inc, the extension can be anything, and put most anything that your other files can use in it. Check out your php3.ini file for and include path, adjust to your liking. Then use 'include' or 'require'

<? include ("common.inc"); .....

in your other files to share the content of your 'common.inc' file.

I get the willies having to open an attachment just to read mail. I image others just don't.

But, take a look at the v3.23. It has a RAND().

From cyclops ORDER BY RAND() LIMIT 1

not in previous versions.

Well, the easiest way is to do whatever you need to do with databases and stuff and then just send a header pointing to the original file.

If the user was trying to DL http://thisis.myserver.com/files/myfile.zip and you redirected it with dl.php3?file=http://thisis.myserver.com/files/myfile.zip you just send off a header like:

header("Location: http://thisis.myserver.com/files/myfile.zip");

and the net result should be as if the user clicked on an actual link to the file. You can't use 'Save link as...' tricks from the browser this way though as the PHP script will end up being saved (I think).

Hi, all:

I need to solve the following problem. The code receives from a form (or other source) values to compare and comparing relation as strings, say

$a = "0"; $b = "1"; $rel = "<=";

Following execution should be branched according to comparison (0 <= 1 with this input). The naive way to implement this is:

if ($rel == "<=") { if ((int)$a <= (int)$b) { // true branch } else { // false branch } }else if ($rel == "==") { if ((int)$a == (int)$b) { //........ } //............. } // ...........

and so on. Older interpreting languages like FoxBASE permitted the following trick with variable variables: construct

$co = $a.$rel.$b;

and calculate

if ($$co) { //............

Interpreter would substitute the value of $co BEFORE execution, so the approrpiate line

if (0<=1) { //....

would be executed. However this does not work in PHP3, probably because substitution leads to

if ("0<=1") { //...

which is obviously false. I wonder if there exists a similar substitution trick in PHP3 that would properly work.

Thanks in advance.

Arcady.

Try eval() http://www.zend.com/manual/function.eval.php

You could probably eval() the result of your concatenation in the if() statement and get the results your looking for. I think, I haven't tried it myself.

One approach might be to build your comparison string into a statement that could be passed into eval() - http://www.php.net/manual/function.eval.php3

Perhaps something like (untested)

<?php $string = "if $a $rel $b then \$resultistrue = 1 else \$resultistrue = 0"; eval($string); if ($resultistrue) { // true branch } else { // false branch } ?>

attached mail follows:

This might work

$co = intval($a) . $rel . intval($b);

but I haven't tested it.

But eval() is probably the way to go

K: Yeah. I have valid query result in blah (from what you have written here). But what difference it makes anyway. Before the while loop itself, I have assigned $ar like this: $ar=mysql_fetch_array($blah) and then how do your while loop makes difference. I don't understand your way of writing / concept at all.

> I also do not know why you're fetching individual cells using mysql_fetch. > Strange code :)

K: Yeah. I also wonder about it. But again I can't fetch the row with mysql_fetch_row and it doesn't works well with mysql as it's working with odbc (ms access). Then what do I do here ?. There's no way for me except fetching the individual cells using mysql_fetch.

Have anything else to say here ???.

I'm not sure why you would, but you would need to run Zope behind apache to pull it off. Zope's internal server is Medusa based which doesn't run php, except maybe as a cgi and the Zope/Medusa code is modified from the original Medusa code.

You need to use {}'s arround the name of your variable variables... ex. $Ret{$j}[$ct]

To prevent it from confusing it with $Ret{$j[$ct]}

Also, it seems to me, that on the version of PHP I Normally work with, you need to have the variable part of the variable name at the beginning of the variable, like ${$j}Ret, or do a $varname= "Ret".$j; ${$varname}[$ct]

odbc_execute($res,&$array);

but not exactly sure of the syntax for the Call bit

odbc_do($connID, "{call my_sp($a, $b, 'foo')}")

You can't get return values and it only seems to cope if one result set is returned.

I believe the Sybase drivers are usable only if you use MSSQL Server 6.5.

I have not been able to get FreeTDS running correctly either. A SELECT query will work just fine. Any other query, like DELETE, UPDATE or even INSERT will cause the PHP script to die and return nothing to the client (the database is updated though).

Tried with both PHP3.XX and PHP4-XX...

(please mail me if you decide to use FreeTDS and are more successfull ;))

btw, never tried ODBC as I grew sick and tired of MSSQL ;)

MySQL has nothing to do with the browscap.ini .

With which browser do you look if it works and which OS? because I don't get anything to see if I look with Netscape 4.61 under Linux, but if I look with IE or NS under Win98, then I get a lot of information.

If I know the timezone for a user (i.e. its in their account profile), is there a somewhat elegant way with PHP of showing dates stored in mySQL database that are store in a different timezone (e.g. EST).

It would be real nice to have a gmdate equivalent where you can specifiy a timezone other than GMT. Currently I use a combination of mktime and date, where I subtract/add in the delta of the user's timezone and the timezone of where the system/database is kept.

Are there PHP scripts out there that could take a timezone name such as 'PST' and adjust a timestamp to that timezone, and even handle daylight savings time?

Well, actually, it is doable, and I've posted some code to do just that. You see, you don't have to keep track of all used domains, you don't even have to 'know' when to change the realm. All you need to know is when the users is 'logging off'. If the user does a logoff request, set a status bit in that users field that says 'logging off' or something. At the next hit from that user to a 'protected' page, the browser will send that users id and password, the authentication subroutine checks the user data and finds the status bit set to 'logging off'. It then sets the status bit back to normal, and sends a access denied header (404 if I recall correctly) with a realm including a _timestamp_. As this header is only send when the user either hasn't logged on before, or when he/she has explicitly logged off, it doesn't matter that the realm is different each time. But because the realm is different, no browser I know of 'remembers' the users password and id. There is a problem with this approach though. If you logoff from the system and then close the browser, your next login will be denied once. This is because the algorithm expects one automatic/invisible login from the browser, but once that browser is started fresh, it has no data to do that. So the first 'access denied' will be because the user hasn't entered his/her id and password, the second will be because the logoff status bit was still set, only the third will succeed. This means that the user will have to fill in the id and password twice. Oh well, nothing is perfect. I've put some code that does this on http://px.sklar.com/code.html?code_id=297

It would be much nicer on Linux, at least for the server. It runs much faster and is more customisable.

> Does anyone know if IIS 4 will install and run on NT workstation? I have a dev > machine at home with NT server but I can't see my employer splashing out on NT > server just to "mess around on" :-)

Yes but it is a cut down version, a lot less you can do with it. Don't know if PHP can be set up on both or not though. Why IIS though, not much reason to using this if you are no longer using ASP pages, why not use Apache.

Well on Workstation IIS is about the same as this.

If you can this would be the best thing you could all do. It would be massively faster and you would learn it soon enough. Start with something like redhat. Also XEmacs is a good programming editor but will take some learning.

If you feel that the workstation version of IIS is not enough I believe that there some registry setting that will convert it to a Winddoze NT workstation into a server.

best way to find out if IIS will work on NT Workstation is to try and install Option pack 4 or whatevr it's upto now.. as for linux.. have you tried Mandrake ? personally i prefer slackware.. but I saw the new install for mandrake.. and it's really nice.. you should be able to play with that.. I'm not going to get into if NT is better than Linux or vice versa.. .. but if You can't afford server, and IIS doesn't work on workstation remove workstation and try mandrake :).

Hi,

since I absolutely love ODBC at the moment, i'd like to know what other PHP developers think of it as a way of abstracting database interaction. I use it intensively in our Intranet, and it's nice to be able to build a quick and dirty system in Access and PHP, and then when everything is ok'd by the bosses, to upscale it to for example MS SQL or another ODBC compliant database like Oracle, Postgresql etc. We develop the httpd stuff on the Linux platform , and use mostly MS SQL on WINNT for the database stuff, but it gives me a secure feeling to know i'd be able to switch to other databases in a few hours work, mostly spend on translating queries which are too much MS SQL like. Any opinions on this?

AFAIK, there are 2 different return receipts: the first is read by the destination mail server and is triggered by the header Return-receipt: (or similar) this is transparent to the user and hence not annoying at all

the second is really annoying, the user is notified, I hate it and I will never use it and is triggered by Disposition-Notification-To:

I know, and I've still to understand completely that before starting to coding something I should check his http://phpclasses.upperdesign.com (free ad here!)

Hi all,

I have to decide whether to put certain data in a XML file or a mySQL database. This is for medium sized site with about 2000 hits an hour.

Though there are many factors to consider, I was wondering

1. how speed is affected. 2. if there is a difference in the server load factor (Linux RetHat 6.1)

and also please add any other comments you may have.

Thanx,

You should treat XML as a mechanism for representing data and not for storing data.

I would be inclined to say, store your data in mySQL and use PHP to represent it as HTML/XML/WML....

With regards to scaleability, how many SQL queries does 2000 hits (or is it pageviews) translate to? My site easily handles 100K SQL queries (50% SELECT 50% INSERT or UPDATE) a day without breaking a sweat. I'm running on a PIII500 with 128MB RAM, PHP4RC1, MSQL, Zend and Apache.

(FYI uptime 5:13am up 5:49, 1 user, load average: 0.03, 0.07, 0.09)

Cheers, Shri

I have a PHP/MySQL Database setup with information in which the user can search on

Can anyone point me in the right direction or provide sample code etc on how to do the following

The database holds job details

I want to set up a facility where the server will email the user if any jobs match certain criteria.

I could probably do this by running a script manually - but if I want to automate this so the server runs maybe once ot twice a week - how do I do this??

Thanks in advance!

Javascript. Probably the best way is to create a simple function with an if statement. The syntax is something like:

if ( var == whatever ) { document.formname.elementname.checked = true; }

In the select box tag you would then have something like

onChange="function(var)"

The 'forms' section of javascript.internet.com is a good place to start for example scripts and syntax.

Yes it can be done with Javascript!

Use onChange in the selection box and write a function where you set the checkbox.checked boolean property to true.

I could be wrong (I often am) but it may not be possible to set a cookie and redirect on the same page.

You could use the 'refresh' tag to send users on to another page after they collect their cookie (e.g. http://apps.freshmeat.net/homepage/954251081/).

Hello Eugene,

I've used this technique successfully (setcookie and redirect). But the value of the cookie in your example, "user_id" is not a variable (no $) and is not a string because no quotes, so what is it?

Hi,

I just wrote a piece of code doing the same thing this morning which works fine.

The value of the cookie needs to be a string so it should read:

setcookie("user_id","user_id");

or if uesr_id is actually a PHP variable then use

setcookie("user_id","$user_id");

Hi everybody, I am experiencing with cookies some way of realizing a small cart shop...

my code is this:

<?php if ($action=="add"){ $total_items ++; setcookie("items[$total_items]",$art); setcookie("total_items",$total_items); }

[...]

echo "<FORM action=$PHP_SELF>"; echo "<BR>Add to cart : "; echo "<INPUT type=hidden value=".$myrow["codice"]." name=art>"; echo "<INPUT type=hidden value=add name=action>"; echo "<input type=Image name=Submit src='pics-layout/si.gif' border=0>"; echo "</FORM>";

[...]

echo "<P>You got the following articles:<P>"; echo "<UL>";

for ($i=0;$i<=sizeof($items);$i++){ echo "<LI>".$items[$i]; } echo "</UL>";

[...]

?>

The problem is that the first time I choose an object I , the page reloads itself and SHOULD add it to the array $items[]. But it seems to not happen. If I choose another article the "for" loop prints the article I selected for first, but not the second... Adding a third I receive an array with the first TWO articles (but not the last, the 3rd) and so on...

Why it is happening ?

Thanks !

I can't figure out how your system is working based on the code snippets but cookies aren't visible until the next time they're read. If you set CookieA in PageA.php and then try to read that cookie later on in PageA it won't work. The next time you load PageA the cookie will be there.

From the manual ( http://www.zend.com/manual/function.setcookie.php ): "Common Pitfalls: Cookies will not become visible until the next loading of a page that the cookie should be visible for."

best is to set a cookie with time and all its parameters setcookie("stuff","name","time() + number of seconds","site directory",".yoursite.com",0); basically first u assign value then name then time() + number of seconds site directory as if ur runing ur scripts out of www.mysite.com/mysite/pass/ the u have to use /mysite/pass then its site url so if u runing out of www.mysite.com just take out "www" which leaves u with .mysite.com and then its ither cookie transformed via secure or non secure server 0 is non and 1 is secure.. thats it...

i have a loop from a query that return multiple rows. for example. if i retrieve data from my customer database for the last name 'smith', i get 5 results. i want to beable to loop through each result and display a fresh page for each result. with a next button to go on to the next page.

i have

$gsql= "select * from info where name = '$dust'"; $result=mysql_query($gsql);

while($row = mysql_fetch_row($result)) { display data; wait till next button is pressed. }

how would i implement the next button to load the next data set from the query?

You can't do it in a loop like that as PHP is server side only.

You need to send a parameter to the script to load the next result, in a form or directly in an URL.

Well, I actually use the exec() command. The login via the web, their username/password is checked against the one stored in a db, then a session is started. The user/pass isn't stored in the session but is retrieved everytime a command is issued. I realize this could be potentially dangerous so I'm careful about how they login. I lock the web login after 3 failed attempts, the session expires if not active for 5 minutes, and root login is absolutely not allowed. Any suggestions?

Jason

Jason, out of curiousity, what sort of interface between PHP and PAM are you using?
