If you're doing this with text files, you'll probably want to read in the file, the write it back out again, with the information you want at the top output first.

Another approach would be to put the opinions in a database, which you could then sort however you wanted (most recent, oldest, etc.)

You could open the file, put the contents of it into a string ($file), prepend your info ($newFile=$myData.$file), then write out you new file ($newFile)

1. Open a file with r+ 2. read the contents of the file into a variable 3. write the new comment to the file (now the new comment is at the beginning) 4. write the old values to the file. (now the old comments are following)

I haven't done this before, but it seems like it should work.

Also Marian, why do you keep posting to the mailing list information about your editor product? I may be wrong, but I believe this is a general-help mailing list, not one geared towards advertising your products. If someone wants to know about your product they can go to the mailing list archive and read your past advertisements for additional information.

A visual studio is definately need for PHP. I use jEdit (which is in java) on Mac (which is not the best java implementation) and it is "almost" as responsive as a normal text editor (BBEdit). JBuilder is a visual tool and it is written in Java and works well. Also, with the next version of Java focusing on client enhancements (faster VM) and the work that IBM, etc is doing with Java VMs, I believe it will only get faster.

But on the KDE/gnome tip, does anyone know if you can run a gnome or KDE app if it is not you "desktop environment". For example, provided Mac OS X has the GTK, gnome libraries, etc. ported to the system. Would you be able to compile and run a gnome app in a none gnome desktop environment?

Hi,

Gnome and KDE can both be run without their environments,but both depend alot on libs that are used as a base for that envirenmont. For example, for KDE you need alot of KDELibs, altough it differs per application. Since KDE is built with QT, it's apps should be portable to windows, as long as they don' use X or KDE specific stuff too much. I don't know wether QT is also available for mac, you could check www.trolltech.com for that. I wouldn't be surprised if with the arrival of OS X alot of X apps would be ported to it, maybe even X itself? Stuff like that is already done on NT with cygwin, and OS X is more unix like then NT afaik. About the GTK/GNome stuff, i wouldn't know. It's approx the same story as with KDE i'd think, with the difference being that GTK is free, and QT is only free on UNIX afaik.

That is encoded according to RFC 2047. Here:

http://cvsweb.horde.org/index.php/horde/lib/package.Mime.php

... you'll find the mime package that the latest version of IMP (http://horde.org/imp/) uses. The function mime_decode() will take care of decoding strings like the one you mention. You also might find some of the other stuff in that file useful.

My $.02... I "grew up" in a Windows only shop and moved over to a Un*x oriented a company a little over a year ago. Culture Shock!

I really was convinced that the Microsoft way was the only way to do things. If your talking RAD then MS still has an advantage with VB...but not the Web.

I've learned a lot since then. Using Linux (or FreeBSD, my fav) is actually quite simple once you get in and use it. I sometimes get frustrated now when I inadvertently use sh commands on my windows box (I guess I need to get MS's SFU ad-on).

Everything I could do with ASP and more is possible with PHP, and Apache is simply better (all around) than IIS(PWS is just a stripped down version of IIS). It took me a little while to learn this fact.

The idea of OpenSource is inherently secure. I once took advantage of an IIS vulnerability that MS was slow to (a)acknowledge and (b)fix. OpenSource holes are found fast and patched hasta pronto!

As far as spec'ing a development machine, don't bother paying for your OS (or at least get the cheapest one and reformat), Linux and FreeBSD are FREE! Installation is simple too since it is menu driven. If you want to access files through your Windows explorer put SAMBA on the Unix box. Besides you can use a cheaper i386 box and have the same performance as a full-tilt machine running Windows. Unix can do everything better than Windows can. (although Microsoft makes "windowing" a bit easier for the end user...for now). You can also run many (if not all by now) windows apps on Unix by using Wine (www.wine.com).

For production I simply would not recommend a Windows box as a host...period! regardless of what proponents say... I've been there, done that, broke it. There are quite a few people closely studying MS byte code for holes. They put a lot of work into that and don't always want to announce it. With OpenSource (Linux, FreeBSD, Apache, PHP, etc) everyone has access to the source so new holes can be found and fixed quickly. These days they are fewer and farther between, too.

Note...Microsoft's Hotmail.com runs on FreeBSD! See for yourself at www.netcraft.com. If they were so confident in the power and ease of use of IIS then wouldn't they have converted by now?

Hope this helps "influence" your decision ;) Christopher DeLess c_delessefn.org

Yes I do. Banner advertisment revenue. Asking for a dollar. Links to money making sites. I have ideas for all kinds of "free" products, that I do not push onto development communities. I guess my frustation is that this is not the first time you have mentioned your "free" product on the list. I definitly don't intend personal offense, but if everyone mentioned their "free" products, then this list would be even busier. My inbox would be even bigger, and more time is spent finding the real information, and more time finding people who really need help.

Maybe you could form a mailing list of people who want to hear about your products, and send to them email about you products.

I -just- finished modifying some code I found in a codebase out there to get multiple select boxes while pulling from mysql into arrays. Some of the variables (store*) are still unchanged from the original code, but this will work. Well, here is a piece of actual Javascript code:

I think you will be interested in these :

1) window.document.forms[0].elements[i].name, loop to get the names of the elements of the first form in your page

2) (window.document.forms[0].elements[i].name.slice(0,window.document.forms[0].elements[i].name.indexOf('['))=='amount'), will be true if the name of the element is 'amount'. I think you should put 'list1'.

-Stathis.

<code> function update_totalprice() { // find the sum of amounts in form var sum = 0; for (i=0; i<sz; i++) if (window.document.forms[0].elements[i].name.slice(0,window.document.forms[0].elements[i].name.indexOf('['))=='amount') if (window.document.forms[0].elements[i].value.length!=0) sum += Number(window.document.forms[0].elements[i].value); } </code>

PHP gives you whatever Sambar gives it.

If Sambar doesn't break out HTTP_USER_AGENT from ALL_HTTP or whatever it is, PHP isn't gonna do it for you.

Configure Sambar to make it give that, or explode ALL_HTTP.

You're going to have to find a key-pair algorithm that both PHP and VBA know about...

If VBA only knows about XOR, well, that's what you're stuck with...

Not knowing exactly what XOR encryption is, but there almost for sure is some software that does it that PHP can exec().

What are you encrypting anyway?...

Hello, I have been working with PHP for years and never had this problem before... and it seems to be specific to Netscape 4.X I have apache 1.3.12 and PHP 3.0.16 configured with Oracle support and MySQL. OK... so I use PHP to connect to an Oracle server and Everything works fine in Lynx and MSIE. But Netscape really messes up. In the PHP script there is NO html tags what so ever.. I removed them all, including header, body tags etc. so the output come out messy but when I view source it is formatted by \n and \t The heart of the script is simply. $query = "SELECT * FROM pais where PAIS_NOMBRE like 'C%' order by PAIS_NOMBRE"; $stat = OCIParse($conn,$query); $nn = OCIExecute($stat); $ncols = OCINumCols($stat);

echo "($ncols)\n"; $i=1; while($i<=$ncols){ echo OCIColumnName($stat,$i)."\t"; $i++; } echo "\n";

while (OCIFetch($stat) == 1){ $i=1; while($i<=$ncols) { echo OCIResult($stat, $i). "\t"; $i++; } echo "\n"; }

Which in Explorer and Lynx produces (when I view source). (3) PAIS_COD ZONA_COD PAIS_NOMBRE 5 6 Z 3 C h i l e 5 7 Z 3 C o l o m b i a 5 0 6 Z 2 C o s t a R i c a 5 3 Z 2 C u b a

But in Netscape all I get is (when I view source) (3) PAIS_COD ZONA_COD PAIS_NOMBRE

Any one have any guesses?

If you are already running Webalizer, you could cron it every 5 minutes and rotate your logs, I guess...

Make sure there isn't another php.ini somewhere.

Mr. Trollboy,

You are assigning $stage a new value. Try:

if ($stage ="submitted") ^

probably should be: if ($stage= ="submitted")

Plus, I only read examples showing quotation marks around strings inside functions, so mysql_connect (localhost, username, password); mysql_select_db (home);

probably should be:

mysql_connect ("localhost", "username", "password"); mysql_select_db ("home");

Since the IF statement is always true, your lack of quotation marks is causing a syntax error.

also $commands = "insert into kb(title,date,article,keywords) values('$title','$date','$article','$keywords');

probably should be:

$commands = "insert into kb(title,date,article,keywords) values(\"$title\",\"$date\",\"$article\",\"$keywords\");

Usually variables inside of single quotations are not translated therefore:

<?

$joe = "blah"; echo $joe; echo "<BR>"; echo '$joe';

?>

will out put

blah $joe

Hope this helps, Robert V. Zwink http://zwink.levitate.org

Try either adding quotes or removing the semi-colon on line 11 like:

<? echo "$PHP_SELF"; ?>

or

<? echo $PHP_SELF ?>

and see if it goes away. That is just how I have always done it. I don't know if it is correct, or the only way. I haven't tested this either, just going from memory...

Missing a " at the end of this statement.

That means the Sybase stuff didn't really get in there.

Check config.cache and read the messages carefully.

I also have this vague feeling that you're supposed to use one of Sybase and Sybase-ct, not both...

In PostgreSQL it would be like this:

select blah from whatever order by substring(item, 4)::int4

You'll have to read the MySQL manual to figure out how to do substring and type conversion from text to integer.

Read the section of the manual devoted to types, including strings.

$data = "Here in need to include some \" in the var"; $data = 'Here in need to include some " in the var';

I think Sascha said on Zend.com Phorum that for security reasons PHP session vars cannot be altered by following pages, only on original page.

I don't really understand the issues involved though...

Seems to me that if you had a session variable that held an authentication value like

$session_variable = "1234DEdd444FD";

You wouldn't want someone to be able to append the key/value to the URL to modify it. This could be considered a security problem.

If you set a session variable, someone could change that value simply by guessing the name of the variable, then appending it to the URL.

http://www.somepoorsite.com/shopping.php?session_variable=OtherPersonsID

ASP allows you to change session variables because the variables passed in the URL are not available until you request them.

Its a trade I guess, if you want to change the session variable assign it to another variable with a different name. I don't know. Just a thought.

http://www.postgresql.org/ is probably the closest thing to MySQL with (not alpha) transaction support.

You should be able to translate most of the MySQL tutorial info into PostgreSQL without trouble.

PostgreSQL is OpenSource, free, fast, easy to setup (I found it easier than MySQL, actually)...

Dunno about the Windows port though...

If you have something already installed, might want to go with that, whatever it is...

FINALLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry about the caps, but i'm kinda tired of all the mysql support in PHP's community. Sure, MySQL is superfast, Sure, it's cheap on linux, BUT:

Postgresql is much more sophisticated (featurerich) It's cheaper (free on windows too)

My 2 reasons to use it for anything but simple page serving, because that is where MySQL is the star.

Please see the "File Upload Feature" of the PHP manual (or one of its mirrors if it's still down).

There is also the seminal example "Photo Album" of Rasmus' from 'way back when, still kickin' on devshed or somewhere like that.

Use your fav 'net search engine for 'rasmus lerdorf photo album'

Read your config.cache and search for mysql comments.

Is the CVS service still not working or are there other quirks. If I make a commit I just get this:

cannot open last file at /repository/CVSROOT/commitinfo.pl line 14. cvs server: Pre-commit check failed

If the MySQL server is down, this will take a long time to execute before it decides to give up...

I dunno what $dbErrorMsg is...

To build a dynamic web site you want to think data on a page. Theoretically you can build a 1,000 page web site with one page.

You say you want to display data that is supplied by someone else. I would build a data base that the others can access. They can add and modify the data.

You then build pages that will display this data. The others can change the data as often as they want with out your intervention.

You could use MySQL, text files or .csv files.

I've checked the archives back to the beginning of March and I can only find fragments of what I need to know. I have Oracle 8.1.5 running on a RedHat 6.0 box and I wish to access it from another machine that will be running RedHat 6.1, Apache 1.3.12 and PHP4.0. What exactly is involved? Apparently, I have to install Oracle8i Client on the PHP machine. Where can I find out how to do that? And I believe I have to configure php including both --with-oracle and --with-oci8 options. Is this correct? What else is involved? My experience to date involves installing php-4.0RC1 and Apache 1.3.12 on a machine and getting the whole thing to work. Sorry to trouble you and if there's anywhere that you know of that documents the whole messy procedure, please point me there.

Thank you.
