That was from your message to me :-) Note the first line.

Now, if you look at the headers of a message from the list to you, you'l see a Return-Path line like (for me):

Return-Path: <php-general-return-43438-huntsman=www.nisu.flinders.edu.aulists.php.net>

which will tell you what the subscription address is. Armed with this information, you can then send a specific unsubscribe request

php-general-unsubscribe-huntsman=www.nisu.flinders.edu.aulists.php.net

but substituting whatever is in your Return-Path. You _should_ then get a confirmation request for your unsubscription.

If I am not wrong, there are over 5.000 subscribers to this list, while it only sends 200-300 emails a day. (I took this data from my own 80.000-emails mailbox, so don't judge my previsions)

The "big boys", or better say these who do not write because of being busy but always read because there's always something to learn, ARE HERE.

If you look at archives you'll find a lot of advanced help messages, as well as generic ones.

I think - there's nothing bigger then php-generallists.php.net, that's where I, and most of my team learn and update ourselves.

Has the worst memory management of any software I've ever used. I have to reboot at lest 10 times a day when I use it. The support forum on their site is filled with complaints on this issue. Their response to this issue was not to fix the memory leak (or whatever it is) but to issue a warning when resources are getting dangerously low to give you the opportunity to save all your work before you reboot. Beyond that, their stance is "Well, if you don't like it, return it and we'll give you a refund". If this wasn't the only piece of software that handled projects the way we needed, we'd have thrown out this piece of garbage software a *long* time ago.

Running under Win2K I can have HomeSite 4.5.1 open for weeks, working on 10+ files, without any problems whatsoever.

However, I used to run it under Win98 and it would crash 1-2 times per day...

Yes I use it with NT and run into occasional memory management problems as well. It is a great editor but has small issues that really can annoy a person. Also the FTP engine blows. It can be most unpredictable.

The main feature I need of any editor is project management. Of all (and there have been *alot*) the editors I've looked at, Homesite is the only software that works the way we need with respect to projects. :/

Yup. It sure does. However, it doesn't work as we need it to. When I looked at EditPlus last time, it had a flat project structure. Meaning that you could add files to a project, but when you opened that project, all you would see is a list of all the files. This is irregardless of where the actual file exists. We need projects to be set up in a tree layout so that it basically looks like the directory structure of the website. So you'll end up with:

-home --news -software --features ---v1.0 ---v1.5 --screenshots -contact --asia --europe

etc with the relevant files in each of the folders/subfolders *in the project* with access to each when you click on the same. EditPlus, as far as I can recall, just lists out all of the files:

/home/home1.php /home/home2.php /home/news/news1.php /home/news/news2.php /software/software1.php /software/software2.php

and so on. If you have 100s of files in your project, you'll be scrolling and searching for a while to find one particular file...

Initialize the counter before your loop, like so: $counter = 1; In the loop, print out the value of the counter and increment it by 1: echo $counter++;

The "++" added to counter instructs PHP to increase the value by 1 AFTER the operation and is a shorthand way of saying echo $counter; $counter = $counter + 1;

If the second way is clearer to you, and you feel more comfortable with it, do it that way.

It will be well worth your time visiting www.thickbook.com and doing Julie Meloni's tutorials. She covers a lot of basic principles very clearly. You can also pick up a LOT of useful information on PHP at phpessentials, devshed, zend.com and so forth.

If the ACTION attribute of the form points to your PHP script, the variables should automagically appear, i.e. $result would be "1", $age would be "23", and $name would be "john". Failing that you could investigate the explode() function.

However, if the form isn't controlled by you, how come is it sending results to your script?

I'm passing the ID in the url, as recommended, and then having other problems that may or may not really be pertinent to this list:

1) The mySQL text data ($description) won't populate my form. I'm using <textarea> input, and it just won't accept and display the value of $description. It's empty, and when the form is re-submitted after editing, it empties the $description variable.

2) I also have image uploads in my form, and the <type=file> inputs will not accept values, either. Same problem as above .. the empty input areas cause the image names to be deleted from my database when the form is edited and re-submitted.

I can think of a few kludgy workarounds, but I'd rather have a way to get these <textarea> and <file> inputs to accept values. Any help would be wonderful!

I've been successfully uploading graphic files to a directory on my php server for more than a year. Suddenly, it no longer works, and after a lot of probing, I'm at a loss to determine why.

I run PHP4.0.4pl1-3 as an Apache module on RedHat7. Files upload as expected, but PHP no longer provides the content-type as it should following the upload, in the variable: $HTTP_POST_FILES['file']['type']. In case anyone wonders, I ended up recompiling php with the pspell and aspell functions. These functions will return pluralized versions of words, along with possible spellings. I will probably try to customize the dictionary that comes with the programs, but other that that it appears to be what I am looking for.

Beyond that. Anything to suggest?

The requirement is for a peer-peer agent-based situation-theoretic backward-chainer with quasirealtime browser feedback. A functional paradigm is indicated, with monads and all that. All the rest of the site is PHP-driven, so it could make sense to do as much as possible (on the server side) in php.

It looks on the surface that if we stay away from arrays. and we make all functions side-effect free (essentially no overlapping internal variables) and we center the state of results on the browser (a natural for php), then we will be much of the way there, especially if we carefully limit scope as much as possible.

Since we have language heaviweights on the list, thought perhaps there would be some insights into this. Thought also, that the list would appreciate a different question than the same old, same old, same old...

Yes it will work. we've used it in the past to do millisecond timing - had to use jscript for that because vbscript internals don't have any timer mechanism that accurate, but jscript did. it's the same computer, same OS, but each language had different capabilities.

I am able to assume that all of my logged in users have cookies and what ever else I need turned on.

I have added my own function session_isvalid() which checks for the existance of the cookie based on the above code which will be sufficient as a work around for my small application.

This defeats the purpose somewhat of the session module however. I thought that the objective was to some extent hide the underlying implementation from the programmer. A non invasive check requires that I know which cookie is being used(assuming the use of cookies at all). The assumption is not very difficult to make, but the session handling would appear to be more complete with something like "session_isValid()"....

This would not help really anyway as the handler only replaces the storage mechanism (I hope I have understood this correctly!). We could however check the session id in our DB without having to call session_start(). If I have gone to such bother though (reading cookies directly and looking up in DB), I would be better off starting from scratch and ignoring the session module all together!!

This may soon depend on what Cellco you are sending from/to in the UK. They used to pass on messages between themselves for no cost but I understand that they are going to change over to charging each other per message. This may effect their own free email gateways but it certainly will effect the 'independent' ones.

If you want to use an SMSC to do this rather than via an email gateway, and you don't want to set up a link to a real SMSC, you could always use a mobile phone with an 'AT' modem interface (eg, Nokia 7110, 6210) or a GSM modem (a bit more expensive but dedicated to the task) as a virtual SMSC and link the software into that to send the SMS messages for you. There are a few SMS gateways around that will do that - quite a few are free. One example is 'Kannel' - its a WAP and SMS gateway. A nice thing about that one is that you can recieve SMS messages and have them be processed via PHP scripts - to process, respond etc.

the passwds in my systems /etc/shadow all start with $1 which i believe is standard for MD5 passwords of 32 length

any one have any ideas ?

The "$1$" is the start of a 12-char salt (as described in the manual entry for crypt ()).

Probably. You could check the manual's page on preg_match (the user annotations often have very useful code examples), phpbuilder.com, hotscripts.com, etc. A quick, oversimplified example:

Let's say your complete text was (no laughing now <g>) "Mary had a little lamb, its fleece was white as snow." where "Mary had a " and "fleece was white as snow." are always consistent but whatever's happens to be the portion of the text between them is what you want to extract. You could do something like--

$search_string="Mary had a little lamb, its fleece was white as snow."; $status=preg_match("/^Mary had a(.*)(?=fleece was white as snow.)$/i",$search_string,$match_text);

In which case, $status would evaluate to true if a (case-insensitive) match was found, and $match_text[1] would contain " little lamb, its ".

From a quick look at the array functions, it seems like array_splice might do the trick. It's PHP4 only, though.

Everything works fine when I use these two files with Apache running on Solaris, RH, Windows 98, Windows ME and Windows NT 4.0. The main objective is to test if the browser supports cookies of course. But... If I use Microsoft IIS with these two files it never works! The cookie is NEVER sent to the browser (this was verified using Netscape's option to warn about new cookies coming in) and obviously I always receive the error message stating that my browser doesn't support cookies! We had NASTY problems with cookies on different servers. I've even seen code work on one linux/apache machine and not another. This is usually due to the fact that the server's clock is off from the browsers clock (or vice versus) and the browser sees that the cookie has passed and destroys it without setting it.

I am trying to do some fileuploading.. but I am running into a problem with escaping spaces.

Basically, I have this directory that includes spaces and I need to be able to change the spaces to "\ " so for example..

my directory is: Fun Documents I need to change it to: Fun\ Documents

That way when I copy.. I wont get errors! Plus, there is always the potential that the filename might have a space in it.

So how do I escape these spaces?

I have tried this.. and it doesnt work: $copyto = strtr($copyto, " ", "\ ");

That basically just replaces the spaces with a backslash. I tried this as well: $copyto = strtr($copyto, " ", "\\ ");

Didnt work.

I am sorta clueless.. any ideas?

OK, seems I have created some unintended results in PHP. A few weeks ago I was trying to split some common code out into an include file. I was running into problems with an image when the calling file was not in the root of the web directory and was experimenting with various ways to ensure that the image was found no matter where the scripts were included from. Since then, I have noted that I seem to be getting some strange error log entries in Apache:

[Fri Feb 23 08:17:02 2001] [error] [client 10.11.30.13] File does not exist: /home/sites/site3/web/b&w-outline.gif

In an unrelated issue (actually verifying GD support in PHP) I ran php_info() and noticed that in the environment section there are a bunch of REDIRECT_* and SCRIPT_* variables that point to this image including the same 'File does not exist...' message that has been appearing in my logs (REDIRECT_ERROR_NOTES)! Obviously in trying to specify an include directory, I have messed with something that was GLOBAL and has 'stuck' even through a reboot.

Additionally, it is affecting all v-sites on the box. There is no ill effect on the user, however a visit to any page on any v-site seems to trigger a call to this 'script'. I quote that because the 'script' is actually the URI/URL to the above mentioned .GIF!

How do I get PHP to stop trying to pull this file?

Any help would be most greatly appreciated!

I am not sure if there is a way to do this. The only thing you could do is determine level of encryption by browser version. This might work in some cases.. but obviously if they have an old browser version (whose encryption level is low by default) and they install like an encryption_pack (IE example).. it will increase the encryption and you wouldnt have a way to tell.

Ok i'm new to this tanya, but I think i did. Here's a link to php site were I found how to set it up. But tried this way and it still down not work. Regarding the folder, I have a folder called ticket with alot of php files.

I pointed my browser 192.168.2.119/ticket. What i get is a tree directory of everything inside the folder.

You are going to have to work with row pointers. If you are using mySQL, look at the function:

mysql_result();

Umm if you are talking about records in the sense of a table.. you could do something like "SELECT record_id,record_date FROM table" and then go through the array and compare the dates. You only do one query from the database and then you know which records match by hanging onto their record_id.

I would assume that you need to 1) make sure you install it in the same place :) 2) if you already compiled a Apache binary you need to copy the new binary over.. or do another make install.

I would just follow the steps you did when you first installed it.. and it should overwrite everything you did before.. assuming your --prefix is right and what not.

I am trying to set my script up so that when a person clicks on the link, that the page will prompt for a download w/ the filename in the File Name field in the Save As prompt. I can get this to work in Netscapse but when I try to do it with Internet Explorer I encounter problems. It either says there is no application to read the file (I have acrobat reader on the computer.) or it displays the prompt with either [variable's name passed to script].htm or download.php. And the file I am trying to download is a PDF file. If anyone can help me with this I would greatly appreciate this, and thanks in advance.

My problem is that I can't load PHP scripts (.php extension) with my personal server. My OS is Windows 95B (but MSIE 5 update), and I use PWS for Win 95 (not 4.0 for Win 98). My PHP version is: 4.0.4pl1 for Win32

I've already done this instructions, I've found in the manual:

- Updating DCOM - Copying "php.ini" into "c:\windows\" directory - Writing correct path for "extension_dir" field (my path is "c:\php") - Adding ".php" registry key in "HKLM/System/.../W3Svc/Parameters/ScriptMap" with "c:\php\php.exe %s %s" value - Adding ".php" extension in "HKCR" registry key (with correct parameters, I've tested it, there's no running problem)

I don't understand why PHP doesn't run on my server. Maybe "ScriptMap/.php" registry key value is wrong... I'm waiting for any answer...

A few people seem to have this PWS problem - and the only cure seems to be to reinstall PWS. The symptoms seem to be something like PWS is ignoring the scriptmap directive and no end of fiddling around with the registry will make it behave.

You could always ditch PWS and use Xitami if you have a simple setup, or Apache if your needs are more complex. Either way you'll have less bother than with PWS.

I'd like to search inside the text file for my name, then pull all the info from that point till the next name which is Fred.

The text file would be called names.txt

So I'm trying to

preg_match("Peter",names.txt,$myname)

then do the same for Fred, and grab all the stuff in between.

Is this the right way to do this? Or is there something easier?

How can I search names.txt? Can I load it into a variable somehow?

It seemed a cool layout at the time, but I'm thinking this isn't easily possible and I might just have to incorporate a section title on the section screen... But before I rewrite it, I thought I'd ask here.

Not that I am a php expert.. but it doesnt look like you ever assign products to anything.

Shouldnt you be doing something like $products["$prod_id"] = $row["prod_id"]

Also.. if you have more than one rows.. it would overwrite the array. Do you want a 2-d array?

There payment services are going to run the same as always. They just didn't have enough money to complete the merger so they filed for Chapter 11 protection so that they could have finacial protection while they arrange the purchase of the company and to be able to keep the services un-interupted during this change. If you are worried about your payment processor going down (which to me would be a very serious concern) you might want to look at www.opayc.com which is a standardized way to talk to about 30 or so payment processors. So say C$ goes under, instead of having to redo integration to your app, you just switch drivers and voila you can use a different processor. You need an account with the new one of course but the integration needs no work.

It isn't a payment processor it is an API to payment processors such as CyberCash, Authorize.Net, Signio/Verisign, iBILL etc... Basically you make an SQL call to a driver instead of a database and that makes the call out to the payment processor. The eliminates the complexity in dealing with the payment processors. Sometimes the integration with them is easy and sometimes it is a royal pain. This makes the integration the same for all of them so you simply switch drivers to switch payment processors. You could build a failover system so if the one you mainly use goes down for some reason you could build in logic to switch to another one quite easily.

hmm, yes but you're still relying on them for the driver updates, I'm sure all the payment processors change their system every once in a while.

The failover system sounds like a good idea if you don't mind signing on with 2 payment processors, but otherwise it seems like all you're doing is adding an extra layer where things can go wrong.

I'm leaning towards verisign/payflow pro. has anyone had trouble with these guys?

I just reformatted my computer and reinstalled:

Apache 1.3.14 Win32 r2 PHP 4.03pl1 mySQL 3.23.34 - Win

I copied over my mySWL database and my PHP files and I get the following error:

Warning: Undefined variable: Titlesearch in d:\apache\htdocs\bkhtml\movies.php on line 22

This is line 22 of movies.php:

I also get this error:

It still displays what it is supposed to, so it is connecting to and accessing the database, I just get these extra warnings that I never got before.

Check the level of error reporting in your ini file - looks like you may have warnings turned on.

If the connection is persistent pg_close() instructions are ignored (this is also true for other persistent connections and their respective close() instructions).

You can do it in the shell sending USR1 to httpd (killall -USR1 httpd) or by restarting apache (apachectl graceful). The above is true for apache, of course :)

i'm appreciating any comments on this idea:

I'm about to create a completely database driven site (mySQL). Almost all of the output is generated from database data.

A big part of the data is rather static of nature, eg. updated once a month. A smaller part is quite dynamic, e.g. content is added daily.

Now the problem: My webhoster's database server (not the webserver!) is nearly breaking down in high-traffic-times. While static sites are performing fine, my site is almost down :-((

Here my idea: I thought of creating a cache-mechanism where each php-page checks for the existence of a static html-cache-page that holds its contents. When the page is there it is read and echoed out to the browser. If it isn't there, it shall be created automatically.

To create the HTML-cache page i need to build the whole HTML-page content in memory, instead of echoing it back to the user's browser, and finally write it to disk. That means, i have to write all HTML in php-code. I can't just embed php-parts in html tags.

I'm not sure, whether this is the right way to go, as i can see some major drawbacks of this approach, although my general php-architecture is template oriented, which would make the approach practical.

I would really appreciate some comments on this.

There are already some caching packages out there, I'm not sure how they perform with CGI (look into Squid). Having each page check for a cached version of itself sounds like a complicated approach. Another idea is to generate portions of your site as that don't change often from perl scripts, and run these from cron. Using server-side-includes can make this a much easier process.

I'm running 4.0.4 with two patched files from CVS to fix the gzhandler memory leak.

I'm using 'output_handler = ob_gzhandler' in my php.ini to compress output, however I notice that it usually doesn't work.

I'll load a page, which will be uncompressed.. then reload it and it comes back compressed. This happens everytime I load a new page. The first time it's loaded, it's uncompressed. Each time after it's compressed.

Anybody else have this problem?

I'm having an interesting problem. I'm running on an NT machine. I'm using the function:

system("F:/full/path/program");

I've tried it using all kinds of forms of forward and back slashing, doesn't seem to matter... oddly enough, if I copy the text out from between the quote and paste it into a command window it runs fine. I also tried using the exec command, but no luck. The intiger return variable is -1, which I assume to mean it failed...

I'm completely lost now so if anyone has any ideas, input, or longshots, I'd be happy to hear them. Thanks
