    Kyle,

    This has been covered exhaustively and every time it appears it burns up bandwidth. You can check the archives at www.php.net, I believe through the support link.

    Some has also set up a page which describes the various editors that people use; I didn't bookmark it, but you will find it in the archives.

    Remember PHP's a scripting language, so you won't get much visual assistance other than syntax highlighting; so editors may have a code completion feature.

    Hi,

    How do I make a Push Button call a PHP script? This is not a POST operation per say as I already have "Submit" and "Reset" buttons.

    What I'd like is to have my third button call a PHP script and process all the form data in an alternative manner to what the "Submit" does. As a FORM tag can only have one POST operation, I'm in a quandary here.

    Thanks, Don

    attached mail follows:

    if i understand your question correctly, this should help...

    name the buttons different things

    <INPUT TYPE="SUBMIT" NAME="action" VALUE="This"> <INPUT TYPE="SUBMIT" NAME="action" VALUE="That"> <INPUT TYPE="SUBMIT" NAME="action" VALUE="Other">

    then, even thought the form is posted to one place, you can determine which button the user pressed by checking the value of $action;

    It's a clone of the good old day dos WordStar. Very light, and once you master the hot keys, very fast. Much stronger than pico, but still very light.

    I'm looking for a way to have a url for a link "explode" into the actual url address. So for example, on a dynamically created webpage, I have a link called: Contact.

    When someone chooses to view the "printer friendly" version of this page, I want the link on the the printer-friendly page to change to the following: "Contact (http://www.web.com/contact.html)".

    Any ideas of how to automate this process?

    Thank you, Shawna

    attached mail follows:

    you would have to pass a page identifier when its the printer friendly page, then just parse for it.

    quoting your paragraph...

    ------------------------------------- ...on a dynamically created webpage, I have a link called: <?PHP if($page=='Printer Friendly'){ # this is the additional variable you wold pass to tag # as a printer friendly page echo 'Contact (http://www.web.com/contact.html)'; }else{ # regular page echo '<a href="http://www.web.com/contact.html">Contact</a>'; } ?>. ------------------------------------- replace the URL and "Contact" with variables as necessary if they are dynamically assigned.

    if that doesn't sound like what you were looking for, send the file as an example so it can be viewed in context.

    attached mail follows:

    You might wanna make a function for links:

    <?php function makelink($descr, $href) { global $printer; if ($printer) { $link = "$descr ($href)"; } else { $link = "<a href=\"$href\">$descr</a>"; } return $link; }

    To echo an link in a site, do:

    html above <?php echo makelink("Offical PHP-site", "http://www.php.net"); ?> html under

    contact.php will echo: <a href="http://www.php.net">Offical PHP-site</a>

    contact.php?printer=true will echo: Offical PHP-site (http://www.php.net)

    Hope this works!

    How about ...

    foreach ($keys as $key=>$value) $new_array[$value] = $vals[$key];

    Tim ---------- From: elias [SMTP:elias_bachaalanyyahoo.com] Sent: 01 August 2001 15:16 To: php-generallists.php.net Subject: Make associative array from two arrays

    Hello!

    I have two arrays:

    $keys = array("a", "b", "c", "d"); $vals = array(1, 2, 3, 4);

    I would like to get an associative array holding this: $aarray = array("a" =>1, "b"=>2, "c"=>3, "d"=>4);

    I know I can do it with a "while" loop...but I wonder if there is any builtin PHP function that can do that. Or a better method other than sort of this:

    $aarray = array(); for ($i=0;$i<count($keys);$i++) { $aarray[$keys[$i]] = $vals[$i]; }

    thanks!

    So as I understand it, it's Personal Home Page Hypertext Preprocessor. Rather a mouthful.

    Um, I think it's more of a recursive acronym.

    GNU = GNU's Not Unix PINE = PINE Is No longer Elm MINT = MINT Is Not TOS (for fellow Atari ST fans) EMACS = EMACS Makes A Computer Slow (for fellow vi fans) PHP = PHP Hypertext Preprocessor

    Damn, where's Rasmus when you need him? He *wrote* it....

    Which does not explain the php - stands for Personal Home Page, IIRC - there is an interview with Rasmus where he tells the whole story. Doesn't sound that good these days, but this is where it comes from: he invented it for personal use on his own homepage, to find out who looks at his resume. And I think it is really cute and significant for the whole open source movement - just like Apache comes from "a patchy" server. He continues that people approached him to get the code, whence they found bugs he didn't run across and had ideays he'd never have. So here it goes...

    That is a myth and it is not really right :)

    You might want to search for an interview with Brian Behlendorf in which he explains how the name was originally conceived.

    "PHP" is short for "PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor"

    ...neat, huh? a recursive definition!

    Anyway - it is a nice one, isn't it?

    BTW, it is found on http://www.linux-mag.com/2000-04/behlendorf_02.html

    I spent some time reading lots of interviews with him...

    Also, there is a nice game with MySQL and MySQL-Max - I do like that kind of pun.

    It's not. PHP stands for "PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor." It's a recursive acronym.

    Here's what i posted, if anyone's interested:

    Here is a sample class and some test statements to demonstrate how __sleep() is used.

    If you do not return anything from __sleep(), your object will *not* be serialized. You must return something from __sleep() to tell serialize what to serialize.

    <? // to test the class $x = new Scott(); print_r($x); $y = serialize($x); $z = unserialize($y); print_r($z);

    // Simple class to test __sleep() class Scott { // class variables var $error; var $svar = array();

    // constructor function Scott() { $this->svar['Hello'] = "World"; }

    function __sleep() { $this->svar['Hello'] = "Yawn"; // return list of instance-variables to be serialized return array('error', 'svar'); }

    function __wakeup() { $this->svar['test'] = "I'm here!"; }

    }// end class ?>

    The odd thing about PHP is sometimes you have to code backwards, That is your code is in a different order than the pages it produces. This is one of those times. You need to have the Successful login page first, and the login form second in an if statement.

    ie...

    <?php $auth = false; if (isset( $PHP_AUTH_USER ) && isset($PHP_AUTH_PW))

    /* Do MySQL Stuff */

    $num = mysql_numrows( $result ); if ( $num != 0 )

    echo '<p>You are Signed In!</p>'; $auth = true; } else { echo 'Sign In Required.'; }

    }

    if ( ! $auth )

    ?> <FORM ACTION="<? echo "$PHP_SELF"; ?>" METHOD="POST"> <!-- Rest of Form --> <?php } ?>

    Hope that helps.

    Hi,

    I have modified an authentication script to my own liking, but being new, don't know how to go about my next stage.

    Once the user has inserted the UN, and PW, it is campared against the MySQL database, nowm what i want to do is get rid of the login form which still appears, and is very annoying. I can't seem to see anything on this particular subject, but if their is any, can u point me in the right direction.

    It can be viewed at: http://www.stevewrightonline.co.uk/auth/auth.php UN: guest PW: guest

    Here's the code: <P> <FORM ACTION="<? echo "$PHP_SELF"; ?>" METHOD="POST"> <P>UserName:<br> <input type="text" name="PHP_AUTH_USER" size=15> </p>

    <P>Password:<br> <input type="password" name="PHP_AUTH_PW" size=15> </p>

    <input type="submit" value="Log In"> </form> </P>

    <?php

    $auth = false; // user is not authenticated yet

    if (isset( $PHP_AUTH_USER ) && isset($PHP_AUTH_PW))

    // Connect the MySQL Database

    mysql_connect( **************.net', '**********', '***********' ) or die ( 'Unable to connect to server.' );

    // Select database on MySQL server

    mysql_select_db( 'Demonstration' ) or die ( 'Unable to select database.' );

    // the query

    $sql = "SELECT * FROM users WHERE UserName = '$PHP_AUTH_USER' AND Password = '$PHP_AUTH_PW'";

    // Execute query and put results in $result

    $result = mysql_query( $sql ) or die ( 'Unable to execute query.' );

    // Get number of rows in $result.

    $num = mysql_numrows( $result );

    if ( $num != 0 )

    // matching row was found - user authenticated.

    $auth = true;

    }

    }

    if ( ! $auth )

    echo 'Sign In Required.'; exit;

    } else

    echo '<p>You are Signed In!</p>'; }

    ?>

    attached mail follows:

    That way people can type in www.yoursite.com/loggedin.php and bypass the Authentication completely. Great! =P

    At home I am using Win98, BadBlue Server, PHP 4.0.5 and 4.0.6. Here sessions (same example script I posted earlier) seem to work 100%. Must be a config setting at work.

    hey gang.

    here is my sql statement from my php script.

    $sql = "UPDATE TABLE seminar SET title=$title,speaker=$speaker,event_date=$tdate,time=$time,bldg=$building ,rm=$room WHERE id=$id";

    it appears just like that in my code.

    here is the $sql string echoed to the screen to verify the variables.

    UPDATE TABLE seminar SET title=Something amazing,speaker=Mr. Black,event_date=2001-08-05,time=11:00:am,bldg=BCC ,rm=201 WHERE id=48

    all of the variable are valid.

    here is my error.

    1064: You have an error in your SQL syntax near 'TABLE seminar SET title=Something amazing,speaker=Mr. Black,event_date=2001-08' at line 1

    I'm baffled.

    and I couldn't find error 1064 in the mysql manual.pdf either.

    any ideas. I know this is going to turn out to be something silly.

    thanks,

    strings in a mysql query need to be quoted. So change it to

    $sql = "UPDATE TABLE seminar SET title='$title',speaker='$speaker',...";

    Matt

    attached mail follows:

    You will need to put single quotes around your variables in your SQL statement. Like this:

    $sql = "UPDATE TABLE seminar SET title='$title',speaker='$speaker',event_date='$tdate',time='$time',bldg='$bu ilding' ,rm='$room' WHERE id='$id'";

    Without the quotes, SQL doesn't know that Something Amazing is supposed to go together in the same string.

    *always always always* quote everything in SQL statements. you run the risk of letting people insert arbitrary SQL statements into your script if you dont quote values.

    if you're using MySQL, try mysql_escape_string http://php.net/manual/en/function.mysql-escape-string.php

    or you could roll your own with relative ease:

    function db_quote($value) { return "'". preg_replace("/'/", "''", $value) ."'" }

    no offense to you sam, but please dont ever simply place single quotes around values. you have to escape the values *themselves*.

    what if someone submitted the form field title as: $title = "'; DELETE FROM seminar; "

    if you didn't escape the single quotes in there, it would get interpreted as a valid DELETE statement and your seminar table would get wiped.

    however, if you escaped $title, you'd end up setting title to "\'; DELETE FROM SEMINAR; " (rather than have the contents of $title interpreted as SQL commands)

    hey-

    ok, so I've worked on my problem a bit, and here's what I came up, and note this is the whole page.

    <?php

    include("/home/fplg/lib/functions.php"); include("/home/fplg/db/db_config.php");

    $conn = db_connect("fplg");

    $bandquery = "SELECT linkid,title FROM links WHERE cat='band'"; $sitequery = "SELECT linkid,title FROM links WHERE cat='site'"; $miscquery = "SELECT linkid,title FROM links WHERE cat='misc'";

    $bandresult = mysql_query($bandquery,$conn); $siteresult = mysql_query($sitequery,$conn); $miscresult = mysql_query($miscquery,$conn);

    header_start("FPLG:Links"); ?>

    <table width="692" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0"> <tr align="center"> <td width="230" bgcolor="#ff6600" align="center"> <font face="verdana,arial" size="2" color="#ffffff">Bands</font> </td> <td width="230" bgcolor="#ff6600" align="center"> <font face="verdana,arial" size="2" color="#ffffff">Sites</font> </td> <td width="230" bgcolor="#ff6600" align="center"> <font face="verdana,arial" size="2" color="#ffffff">Other</font> </td> </tr> <tr align="center"> <td width="230" bgcolor="#a9a9a9" align="center"> <?php while($band_data = mysql_fetch_array($bandresult)); { ?> <a href="/jump.php?linkid=<?php echo $band_data["linkid"];?>" class="hov1" target="_new"><font size="2" face="verdana,arial" color="WHITE"><?php echo $band_data["title"];?></font></a> <br><br> <?php } ?> </td> <td width="230" bgcolor="#a9a9a9" align="center"> <?php while($site_data = mysql_fetch_array($siteresult)); { ?> <a href=/jump.php?linkid=<?php echo $site_data["linkid"];?>" class="hov1" target="_new"><font size="2" face="verdana,arial" color="WHITE"><?php echo $site_data["title"];?></font></a> <br><br> <?php } ?> </td> <td width="230" bgcolor="#a9a9a9" align="center"> <?php while($misc_data = mysql_fetch_array($miscresult)); { ?> <a href="/jump.php?linkid=<?php echo $misc_data["linkid"];?>" class="hov1" target="_new"><font size="2" face="verdana,arial" color="WHITE"><?php echo $misc_data["title"];?></font></a> <br><br> <?php } ?> </td> <td width="230" bgcolor="#a9a9a9" align="center"> </tr> </table> </body> </html>

    this is supposed to display link information from my db in three columns, one for bands, one for sites, and one for misc. only problem is that it's not displaying correctly, as you can see: www.fplg.net/links.php

    any ideas on what the problem is?

    I think it's impossible to read/understand my own scripts if i don't do it.

    Do:

    <?php if ($submit) { echo "Counting from 1-32<br>"; for ($ii = '1'; $ii <= '32' $ii++) { echo $ii." "; } } echo "<br>All done!"; ?>

    instead of:

    No, no, I indent my code normally, just not after the <?php i.e.

    <?php

    if($submit) { for($i=0; $i < count($fileArrray); $i++) { echo "File $i -> $fileArray[$i]<br>\n"; } }

    ?>

    Not indenting after the <? tag just makes it easier for me when I have hundreds of lines of php code following.

    not at all. the only kind of "scripting" that the client controlls is client-side scripting. browsers do not have any control over server-side scripting.

    PHP, Perl, C++, etc. are server-side. Javascript is client-side.

    if you disable scripting in MSIE, absolutely nothing related with PHP will be affected, but javascript will not work...

    that's why i asked for a better definition of your question - becuase "Scripting" can mean so many different things.

    PS: just remember that client and server are completely separate.

    Here's a more detailed explanation of my problem. I am setting up a form with multiple text boxes. I am trying to send a formatted version of the form, via e-mail... Here's kinda how I have it layed out.

    <html> <head> <script language='javascript'> function formatText() { message = 'Textbox label1 : ' + document.forms[0].text1.value + '\n'; message = 'Textbox label2 : ' + document.forms[0].text2.value + '\n'; message = 'Textbox label3 : ' + document.forms[0].text3.value + '\n'; message = 'Textbox label4 : ' + document.forms[0].text4.value + '\n';

    location.href='mail.php?message=' + message; } </script> </head> <body> <form method='post'> <input type='textbox' name='text1'> <input type='textbox' name='text2'> <input type='textbox' name='text3'> <input type='textbox' name='text4'> <input type='button' value='Submit' onClick='javascript:formatText'> </form> </body> </html>

    mail.php has just a basic php mail function call and a thank you message.

    When I test this, it sends the e-mail, but the message isn't there. I think it is because of the line breaks I added to the message. What can I do to get this working?

    Also, I don't have a perl script to do this for me...

    Thanks. Craig

    Change "HTTP_session_VARS" to "HTTP_SESSION_VARS", since variable names are case-sensitive.

    Kirk

    attached mail follows:

    if there aren't any session vars, $HTTP_SESSION_VARS won't be an array.

    i use something like

    if(isset($HTTP_SESSION_VARS)) { reset($HTTP_SESSION_VARS); while(list($k, $v) = each($HTTP_SESSION_VARS)) { do_something($k,$v); } }

    it's a piece of cake for windows... two steps:

    1) download the .EXE and double-click on it or download the .ZIP and unzip it somewhere (usually C:\php)

    2) configure & restart your webserver

    if you download the .EXE it'll configure any non-apache server for you. if you use apache, you'll have to configure a few things manually.

    read the README and INSTALL files and documents and things... all the info you really need is in the documentation...

    I have a popup window that populates a table with rows from a database and it normally takes about 15 to 20 seconds to load. Does anyone know how I can display a 'Loading... Please Wait.' that will disappear once the data comes up?

    I did this myself, for the exact same reason. First I define this javascript in my page:

    function itsThinkingOpen() {

    imgWindow=window.open("thinking.htm","thinkingWindow","toolbar=no,scrollbars =no,resizable=no,width=400,height=200"); }

    function itsThinkingClose() { imgWindow.close(); }

    and then at the beginning of the page, before the search begins, in php I put echo "<script>itsThinkingOpen()</script>";

    and after the code to search the database I put echo "<script>itsThinkingClose()</script>";

    It works fine here.

    use javascript.

    put this at the top of your big document: var waitwin = window.open( ... );

    and this at the end: waitwin.close();

    you might have to double-check the syntax, as i dont really use javascript too often, but that should work fine.

    Thanks for the response. The only problem is that the page that I'm waiting on is already a popped up window, so I'd hate to open up another popup window on top of that to say that the first one is loading. Is there a way to do this within the same window?

    Thanks! Mike

    Ahh, OK, I thought you wanted a popup window. There is no way to "unwrite" text on a page. The only thing that comes to mind is using a textfield and changing its value through javascript, but that leaves an ugly text field on your page, unless you want to do some CSS to hide it best you can.

    make the same window say "Loading"?

    not unless you used DHTML to create an IFRAME or DIV or some similar HMTL element (i havent kept up on DHTML, so i dont know exactly what you'd need to use).

    set it to be the entire size of the browser width and height = 100%, then, at the bottom of the page, put in a javascript statement to hide it.

    i did something very similar to this once, and i don't reccomend it. it's a bad kludge...

    but it does work, so definately check it out if really want to have the "Loading" message in the same browser window as the document that's being loaded....

    my suggestion is to start with IFRAME, DIV, and FRAME HTML elements and experiment.....

    Found at Google, searched for 'page loading javascript'. There are more complex options, like with a bar graph.

    I've been looking in several places and can't find a good PHP code resource site. The ones I have found have stuff that isn't very good.

    Anyway, I'm looking for a PHP app with MySQL back-end that will do a Portal/directory listing like Yahoo or the Open Directory Project.

    By the way. This problem occurs under the ISAPI version of PHP but works just fine with the EXE version. I understand the the ISAPI version has some potential problems but everything seems to work fine under W2K IIS5 with PHP 4.0.3 whereas with W2K IIS5 and PHP4.0.6 it does not under ISAPI only.

    Be willing to help their users in any way they can, as far as service goes.

    > Is access to professional PHP developers useful when an issue arises?

    Depends on the issue.

    > Are hosting companies reluctant to give you more access rights?

    Usually, and that really sucks, because I've found myself having to set up my own "pseudo-server" on my computer, with PHP4, Apache, and MySQL, just to develop, because the hosts I've found are very reluctant to either upgrade from PHP, or build PHP with the necessary extensions I need. IMO, PHP4 on web hosts should always be compiles with *all* options, so there will be no issue there. And it should always be upgraded to the newest stable version within a week of its release. This may be asking a lot, but people should get what they pay for, right?

    > Are they willing to re-compile their PHP build to add other options?

    No. See above.

    > How long do requested changes to the server take?

    Way too long. The changes requested should take place (ideally) in less than 24 hours.

    > What other suggestions do you have for improving the relationship between > the server administrator and the PHP developer?

    Be nice, and be available to help.

    > I spent some time going through the PHP site looking at the list of hosts > supporting PHP, but I didn't find any real discussion about what people want > in a host (although I did find plenty of things they don't want :).

    Because things they don't want are obviously more abundant. ;) I think people just want to be happy with the service their host provides, and that means the host needs to be prompt and attentive and ready to assist.

    my background is networking. i've built and maintained a number of increasingly complex networks over the years and at times have been intimately involved in the customer support piece. i have had many jobs in the customer support area outside of technology too. now i write and host php apps.

    > We want to make sure that we are providing appropriate support to our PHP > developers. I see too many hosting companies saying that they support PHP, > but not having anyone familiar with PHP on hand. We want to have actual > support, a developer to call when you have a PHP issue.

    do you _really_ want to pay someone 24x7x365 to maintain a php help line? the best coding happens outside the 9-5 window.

    the way i see it, as a php hosting site, your job is to keep the servers up and running, 24x7x365, bug-free and up-to-date. php support is for software consultants (which isn't to say that you can't do both) folks who need hosting want realiable hosting. > > > What do you think a medium sized hosting company could do to give you (the > developer) better service and support?

    honesty, reliability, communication, response, bandwidth.

    > Is access to professional PHP developers useful when an issue arises?

    i doubt it, but imagine you could come up with a business model for providing php development support. probably long term stuff. maybe write and maintain an application for someone, or possibly training...

    i would think of hosting and consulting as separate symbiotic businesses. you'll get some referral business and a little cross-over, but don't expect most hosting customers to want support or for folks who've used you to consult on a project to host their app with you.

    > Are hosting companies reluctant to give you more access rights?

    if they say 'no', does their reason atleast seem reasonable? are they willing to think about it and get back to you? do they say 'yes' when they should be saying 'yes'?

    > Are they willing to re-compile their PHP build to add other options?

    as someone else has said, all options. php hosting should be php hosting.

    caveat--if there are some options that most folks would reasonably call 'optional' or 'dangerous', these shouldn't be expected. i am pretty new at programming and php, so i have no idea if things like this exist. i personally only compile in the options i use.

    > How long do requested changes to the server take?

    unreasonable delays are unacceptable. i mean, if you can get it done, do it. these are our customers. they are giving us money :)

    you (or your server dude(ette)) should be as excited as your customer is for the new features. you should be saying "whoa, i can't believe that's not in there. hold on... ... ... ok, try it now. it works? cool, have a good one. <click>" :)

    (obviously, don't do anything to your box you don't understand, and security, security, security, but you get the picture)

    > What other suggestions do you have for improving the relationship between > the server administrator and the PHP developer?

    do the right thing!

    i've been on both sides of this (positive and negative :) tell your customers everything you know. make it easy for them to obtain any and all reasonable information 24 hours a day. anticipate customer needs. constantly re-evaluate all of your policies and let your customers know them.

    your business should constantly evolve to your changing customer base. when a customer makes a request for something you haven't considered, your response should be "hmmm..., that's interesting. let us talk about that a little and get back to you". and then, slap yourself for not having anticipated the request, talk about it and get back to them. keep them informed.

    the successful enterprises i've been involved with cared about their customers, educated themselves about their endeavor and did the right thing. too many businesses make decisions for the wrong reasons--political infighting, process management, knee-jerk reaction, unmotivated employee, you name it. when a question arises, folks need to openly discuss it and come to concensus. too many folks can't admit they might not know something (or even that times have changed) and they keep doing the wrong thing.

    do the right thing!

    > I spent some time going through the PHP site looking at the list of hosts > supporting PHP, but I didn't find any real discussion about what people want > in a host (although I did find plenty of things they don't want :).

    think about what you want in support from your vendors. support is support. even monkeys can be trained. it takes someone who cares to provide good support.

    Please tell me what host you use!! I cant even seem to get the host I am going through to upgrade php. They'll do it when they feel like is pretty much the response I get. Other host responses: "We don't support php or mysql" "Sometime in the future, but currently no support", "You're the only person that has requested it, so until more demand, we're not going to support it" Frustrating, frustrating, frustrating, especially when I feel like it's the wave of the future. A host that provides everything you've specified... is to die for :)

    So if you have a list... please do tell! :)

    See what this does within your code :

    $count = mysql_result($result,0);

    Should give you your count (number of users in db). Btw, don't escape single quotes in double quotes. In otherwords, the following is fine :

    $string = "I'm a nice string";

    See :

    How would the PHP code know what directories exist on the remote machine?

    You can set the filename, not the directory.

    Maybe you should just install a package, much easier. Check out :

    http://hotscripts.com/PHP/Scripts_and_Programs/Installation_Kits/

    phpTriad and nusphere are popular, as are others. Once it's setup play with the configurations, etc. Usually mysql/apache/php will be installed.

    My guess is that it is working, just not like you'd expect. You're generating HTML, so if you want a new line to be displayed in your HMTL document you need to do echo "Hello there<br>"; instead of "Hello there\n";

    \n will give you a pretty new line if you look at the source of the page

    A couple possible reasons :

    1. Mixing \n and <br>

    \n won't create a newline within your browser but rather it will within your html source code. Meaning, look at your html source and notice the newlines.

    2. Using single quotes

    echo '\n'; will literally print '\n', in otherwords, it won't be evaluated. Odds are this is not your problem but oh well. "\n" will expand into a newline.

    Perhaps this faq will help too :

    http://www.faqts.com/knowledge_base/view.phtml/aid/901

    Also, have a look at the nl2br() function. Regarding the above faq, if anyone can make it more "understandable" feel free.

    Is that "can't" as in "I tried, and it didn't work" or as in "I wasn't able to/didn't try"?

    If bugs.php.net isn't an option for some reason, I'd imagine your next best bet would be to post something to the php-developers list. Keep in mind, though, that using bugs.php.net is a good thing, as it gives your request a trackable identity that can be reviewed, assigned, followed up on, etc. Simply posting a message to a mailing list doesn't do that (unless the idea is so wonderful that somebody else is motivated to enter it).

    Hi

    I faced following problem:

    I've a form where which could have one or more input text fields (it is not clear how many they will be - one or more). Thay have same name - pn - and if they are more that one JavaScript treat them as an array - pn[x]

    The problem is that when I receive this form with more than one field - i.e. pm[2] - in my php script only the last value is seen, others are lost i.e. I loose pn[0], pn[1] and receive only pn[2] as a *pn* variable. I mean that it is NOT an array at all.

    What's the problem and how could I solve it? Thank you

    you have to name the fields pn[0],pn[1]... (you can name them all pn[] but you might have problems with the javascript)

    then to access them from javascript you go something like: document.forms[0].elements['pn[0]'];

    ---> using document.forms[0].pn[0] won't work.

    Okay, not quite easy. You have this option to accomplish multi-uploads. But, as an user, I think it is better to have only one Upload Field, and one browse/submit button.

    When I choose a file, the page is reloaded, with information about the file I just uploaded, and two options. Either upload another or click at somekind of 'Done with Uploading' button.

    Pretty much like when you attach something using Hotmail's email, or at www.delphi.com and attach stuff too.

    But that is just my opinion...

    I'm actually revisiting this after 8 months or more. I have never gotten sessions to work on my server and here's the problem:

    Page 1:

    Create session register a variable. SessionID created is say: 555 (for example) On the drive in /tmp I get a file sess_555 and it contains my variable. I submit a form to another page with additional variable info.

    Page 2 Page two creates the session and recalls the first variable, it is empty. I set the variable which I posted to the page. If I echo $PHPSESSID to the screen I get 555. But in /tmp I have another file sess_777 Contained in sess_777 is my second variable.

    Is this too abstract? Do I need to give code?

    I even do session_name($PHPSESSID); before session_start() and get the same results.

    8 months ago, nobody had an answer for me. Does anyone now?

    Page 2: session_name(login); // target session session_start(); // start target session session_register("Message"); // register new session variable

    If you do not specify the session name you will create a new session each time, which it sounds like is happening. All the session variables should be there on Page 2 and when you add the Message variable all the others (Email and Password) are still there, you're just adding another variable. I hope that helps.. I didn't understand your question fully... we'll see :)

    Look at the headers of an email. If the sender is savvy, they sent it in plain text...

    Content-Type: text/plain;

    This works fine as long as you don't include the tag "<html>". On IE5 for the Mac at least, this causes the browser to interpret the tags regardless of the header. Without <html>, the rest of the html tags will show up as plain text.

    Thanks Philip, its all become clear now.

    I have actually seen that user session stuff a long time ago but forgot all about it. I really should have thought of that.

    Hello! :)

    I have a form with a textarea that contains a template e-mail with variables in it. I would like to be able to replace those variables with values. The variables named in the template are actual variables in my script. This doesn't seem to work:

    $newmail = preg_replace("/\$(\w+)/e", ${$1}, $template);

    ...and neither does anything I've tried to do as far as eval() goes. I either get a parse error like this:

    Parse error: parse error, expecting `T_VARIABLE' or `'$'' in c:\path\file.php on line 16

    ...or some other sort of eval() error. Any ideas? TIA! :)

    This always works for me...

    eval ("\$message = \"$message\";");

    I use it in the same type of scenario you've described, and also with E-Mail bodies stored in a DB. Works like a charm.

    HTH,

Now, obviously, mkthumb.php needs to be modified to handle filetypes other than jpeg. That should be a simple task, I just haven't done it yet.... should be as simple as checking the file type (I insert the type into a column when I store the original image) > > this works..... if anyone can think of a better way to do anything I have done, feel free to add your 2 cents.... Hi Jason!

    Your solution is very interesting, but I think it is necessary GD library to built dynamic thumbnails. My PHP provider has no GD library installed, so I am searching for some other miraculous solution. Here another idea: it is possible to store thubnails into JPG header files, this is allowed by JPG specifications, but I don't know PHP functions to retrieve thubnails from into JPG streams. The <img .... heigh=value width=value > html code won't prevent downloading all bytes from image. I think I am lost.

    Any idea?

    maybe you (the user your script is running as) don't have permission to write the file?

    Use the full ISO lang.charset definition : 'fr_FR.ISO_8859-1'. (Linux allows aliases as defined in locale.alias, that's why "french" works).

    Making mod_so active should be a case of using --enable-shared when you configure Apache.

    Getting mod_so active and using the DSO install is probably the easiest and coolest way at this time.

    >I have already uncommented the lines in my httpd.conf file which read: > >> AddType application/x-httpd-php .php >> AddType application/x-httpd-php-source .phps

    You also need to either:

    1. If you compiled as DSO, uncomment the AddModule and LoadModule about PHP 2. If you compiled as Static, you didn't manage to get the new httpd running A. Perhaps you skipped make install in the Apache compilation process B. Perhaps you skipped stopping/starting Apache C. Maybe you tried to "restart" Apache, but it didn't really happen... 3. If you compiled as CGI, you need to add Alias and Action lines to your httpd.conf
