Depends on your programming background, but I get the feeling you have
none :-)
So PHP is strongly recommend. Once you learn the basics and go for the
'only available if compiled' functions, ASP seems ridiculous weak....

i agree that it depends heavily on your
personal biases and experiences.
if you like Perl/C++/java syntax and constructs,
then you'd probably like PHP.
if you're used to evilness like VB and BASIC
you'd probably like ASP.

ASP.. YUCK.. you think M$ is great?? yeah right.. ask any poor serveradmin
who has now codered on his hands..
Dear friend,
We did adopt you.. send you more then enough info to keep anyone busy for a
while. You still keep on sending messages at the speed of light.
Make up your mind about what you want to use.... get some info from an ASP
list and decide.. but don't please don't start trolling. You demand in your
second mail with this subject to get an answer. That's unusual to say the
least.
Bye,
B.

Hmm...you can get in sooo much trouble with that statement. Microsoft, in
any language, is not a synonym for 'quality'. Innovative? maybe. Quality?
no.
That statement should be your first reason why PHP is better. :-)

I much prefer PHP, obviously... But posting to a PHP list isn't going to
get you a very objective answer. I find PHP more versatile and easy to
use, but an ASP programmer may tell you the same thing about ASP.
Also-- try looking stuff up for yourself sometimes... I realize you're
new to PHP, but at last count, you've sent 46 e-mails to this list in
the past 10 days... 99% of your questions could be answered by going to
the PHP manual, www.phpbuilder.net, or any of the FAQs that have been
posted to this list in the past few days.

Hokay, my 2p...
I'm a (former) ASP programmer who just made the leap from ASP to PHP about 2 weeks ago. A week ago I got my entire web-portal recoded to use PHP, a move that experience tells me can't be done as quickly and easily with ASP. All religious arguments aside, one must admit that (1) PHP is well documented and VBScript isn't (period); (2) PHP has many more USEFUL functions built-in that are already debugged and working; (3) the examples one finds on php.net, phpbuilder.net, or any other knowledge base actually WORK and are usually pretty clear; (4) there is absolutely no question that PHP's notion of security is truly secure, 100% in diametric opposition to IIS/ASP. I've tested that to destruction and am confident enough in it to release PHP as an alternative language for my web-hosting customers.
I cannot repose the same confidence in ASP--even less confidence when Front Page extensions are wrapped around it. Note that I have never released ASP as an alternative language for my customers and given its documentation and security shortcomings, it's not likely to happen.
Mind, I've used ASP for several years and am (unfortunately) intimately familiar with its shortcomings. Many of the string-manipulation functions inherent in PHP must be provided by third parties (like Vantage Point PowerStrings http://www.vpsoft.com) in order to do some tricky URL or input-cleaning routines. I challenge anyone to use M$'s mail objects with the same degree of security and reliability. Try and find real docs on VBScript -- there aren't any with any substance. M$'s site is useless as are the examples they give (which, by the way, NEVER work as demonstrated). M$ should be taking notes from php.net on how to present and maintain documentation.
Now, if a paying customer insists that I do work for them using ASP, of course that's what I'll use. But I strongly advise against it now, given the points above. With only a couple of weeks of PHP under my belt, I'm still confident enough in the language itself and the documentation around it that I will be able to do any web job that comes along. I might have to have the manual at my side a bit longer, but as time goes on I find I refer to it less and less. All in all, a very natural succession of events.
Guess that was more than two cents...keep the change :-)
Bill

Hi Kyle,
Yes, one such ultimate tutorial exists, it's called the PHP Manual. It's large and nice and contains many examples and user comments. If you find it scary, try out some less ultimate tutorials first. Go through the tutorials on devshed.com phpbuilder.com zend.com and related places, spend some time. No tutorial exists that'll make it immediatly click, you're going to have to spend some time on this, quality time. You will encounter scrapes, bruises, and bloody noses on the way and when that happens, php-general is here for you.
I posted some lengthy rambling posts in the past on this topic (please don't laugh), here's one perhaps it'll help your quest for PHP stardom :

What does this mean? Please be more specific. If you want to use these functions, have a look at the PHP Manual as it contains information and examples. In fact, these two functions have the most examples.
http://www.php.net/mail http://www.php.net/date
Spend some time alone in a softly lit room with these functions. If ye first don't succeed, try try again. A good way to learn is to first fail. You'll figure it out, I'm sure of it.
Btw, what's an "extra function", mail and date are not "extra". I can see how you might have a few issues with mail on your windows machine but date?

it's a little bit complicated, but here goes.
1) format your harddrive 2) take out your motherboard and spraypaint it bright orange. 3) dance around the desk three times holding the motherboard above your head chanting "mail mail, give me mail" "date date, give me date" "ooooga booga woooga shooga" 4) install linux 5) install apache 6) install PHP

I think the problem with spreading out discussions that can be as broad as the PHP discussion is that you still tend to have people gravitate towards some of the more "general" or "higher level discussion" groups regardless of whether or not it should fall into the "newbie" category or not.
This is for a couple of reasons: 1) Newbies may think that their newbie group is read mainly by newbies...so their question either might not get answered at all or will not receive the thorough answer they were hoping for. 2) Being a newbie, they might think that their question is "worthy" (for lack of a better term) of higher level discussion because, to them, it is a very difficult problem to solve.
...not to mention that questions would then be "spammed" across multiple mailing lists anyway.
Either way, we would still need a PHP General Forum, so I am not convinced that creating more specialized mailing lists would accomplish much more than creating MORE mail traffic (from the spammed questions) and alienating people who used the more specialized lists because most everyone else is still mainly reading the "General Forum."

Unfortunately this kind of thing happens on all the mailing lists I've seen that are devoted to questions. The real problem here is that the list is simply too busy. I can do no more then skim the subject lines and then usually delete all of it unless something jumps out at me.
It might be helpful if some new mailing lists were created, it wouldn't be a perfect solution but it would help if there were some degree of self selecting behavior possible. Currenty all questions go to php-general. If there were, say, a php-newuser and a php-questions list then perhaps php-general could be used for slightly higher level discussions. Actually its probably too late to "save" php-general, hard to get people to change. Maybe a new list that caters to a higher level of discussion, say php-authoring or the like?
Just a thought. So much tends to get lost or over looked in high volume mailing lists.

Darren, et. al.,
Everything gets posted here - general syntax, database and install questions. Just look at the volume of php-mysql related questions; if they were directly posted on php-db the volume would drop to a more manageable level. Similarly, usage of php-install would help reduce traffic on php-general.
VB used to be on just one list; it was broken up into several lists and all that resulted was a slew of cross postings, with no drop in volume.
Similarly there is no dearth of material on getting started with PHP. Maybe we just have to be a little tougher, collectively, and when truly elementary questions appear, politely and firmly direct the inquirer to the tutorials.
I'd also suggest that links to the FAQ and Tutorials be prominently displayed on php.net's home page. NO NO NO - I'm wrong they ARE there, and pretty easy to find, and the tutorial page has links to other tutorials. Similarly the FAQ is easy to find, and I do believe the words "support" suggest where help may be found.
Maybe the problem is a poor educational system; some people are just too lazy to do research / properly phrase a query for a search engine / experiment a bit before posting?
I also suppose that the demand for dynamic web pages is driving people who primarily worked with html (maybe with visual tools) into a programming environment. They suddenly have to cope with flow control, tests and, quite often, use of a database too. Pretty daunting.
I do not believe a PHP-Newuser or PHP-Questions list would solve anything; all questions at that level can be answered through various tutorials and by WORKING THROUGH examples. I don't mean just cutting and pasting them, but changing them, breaking them, and finding out what happens.
And as for newbie-ishness, hell's bells, all languages /environments reduce us to that state at one time or another. I've been guilty of misplaced "}", most famously when I plaintively demanded why my while loop wasn't looping. A keen-eyed reader spotted it. Newbie question? Yes. What I was trying to do with the loop? Don't think so.
I've written enough - Miles

In what way doesn't it work? Do you get an error message (if so, what does it say?) or just not the result you were expecting?

it also appears that you're checking for the same thing over and over and over
'0' is the same as "0" and 00000000000000 is the same as 0 and "00000000000000" is the same as '00000000000000'
try checking for either 0 or "0000-00-00"

OK, this bugs me. Jeff -- you're obviously getting a kickback for any business you refer to them -- why not mention that in your email so we all know you have some financial interest in the company?

Kurt,
Believe it or not, I am not receiving any kickback for the referrals. The owner of the company is a friend of mine. I help him out by testing features and such(I did mention this in my post). The guy is one of those who is honestly trying to build the best services he possibly can by making sure he listens to what his customers want. He is a programmer himself and so he understands the issues.
If I made any money from it, I would have made sure to have mentioned it. Like you, I hate those posts from people with suggestions to check something out only to find it a selling job for their own benefit. I honestly think this is what the people in the thread is looking for and was trying to help them out.
My apologies if I did not communicate myself properly and gave you the impression I would trying to mislead/take advantage of anyone.

It's not an exact country = locale assignment.
language_dialect.characterset
de_DE.DIS_8859-15 Deutsch (as used in Germany) in the DIS_8859-15 charset. de_CH.ISO_8859-2 Deutsch ( Swiss dialect) in a ISO_8859-2 charset.

On Unix boxes the supported locales are usually in /usr/local/share/locale.
For Windows, a search on Google turned up: http://www.microsoft.com/globaldev/FAQs/Locales.asp

Agreed. Seen it happen quite often.. a special newbie list is created.. that list become a very very low volume list and the other lists are still getting everything.. why? dunno.. convinient?? the people with more knowledge then others stay away??
I'm still thinking about an solution.... Perhaps another description about the mailinglists.. Telling more about the archive.. Or a solutions database for common problems.. but I think this kind of info is already available on other websites.. Some procmail rules to make an autoreply giving some solutions which depend on certain words in the message.. That might certainly help.. but it's a daunting task to make such a beast..
And please.. leave my name out of the subject.. it has been yelled on this list more then enough.

Q: How many mailing list subscribers does it take to change a light bulb? A: Thousands! 1 to change the light bulb and post to the list that the light bulb has been changed. 14 to share similar experiences of changing light bulbs and how the light bulb could have been changed differently. 7 to caution about the dangers of changing light bulbs. 27 to point out spelling and grammatical errors in posts about changing light bulbs. 53 to flame the spell checkers. 156 to write to the list administrator complaining about the light bulb discussion and its inappropriateness to this mail list. 41 to correct spelling in the spelling/grammar flames. 109 to post that this list is not about light bulbs and would they kindly take this email exchange to alt.lite.bulb. 203 to demand that cross posting to alt.grammar, alt.spelling and alt.punctuation about changing light bulbs be stopped. 111 to defend the posting to this list saying that we all use light bulbs and therefore the posts **are** relevant to this mail list. 306 to debate which method of changing light bulbs is superior, where to buy the best light bulbs, what brand of light bulbs work best for this technique, and what brands are faulty. 27 to post URLs where one can see examples of different light bulbs. 14 to post that the URLs were posted incorrectly, and to ask for corrected URLs. 3 to post about links they found from the URLs that are relevant to this list which makes light bulbs relevant to this list. 33 to summarize all posts to date, then quote them including all headers and footers, and then add "Me Too." 12 to post to the list that they are unsubscribing because they cannot handle the light bulb controversy. 19 to quote the "Me Too's" to say, "Me Three." 4 to suggest that posters request the light bulb FAQ. 1 to propose new alt.change.lite.bulb newsgroup. 47 to say this is just what alt.physic.cold_fusion was meant for, so leave it there. 143 votes for alt.lite.bulb. 27 to post in HTML because they are using the IE or Netscape that had it turned on by default and are too clueless to look. 48 to complain about the HTML posts. 27 to post 'sorry I didn't realize it was on' -- in HTML. 96 to complain about more HTML and post detailed instructions on how to change the setting. 58 to mumble something about using a web browser to read mail. 12 MIME posts with useless colors and bolds saying thanks for the help with the HTML mail. 1 to post a GIF/JPG of the lightbulb hanging too close to his digital camera. 58 to complain about the binary post. 14 to say they liked the binary and didn't mind it. 1 post about how you can M*A*K*E M*O*N*E*Y FA$T!!!!! by selling lightbulbs and this report available for only $5. 1328 to reply to the list with the full spam attached and then put 'remove' at the end. 3 to flame the other morons for replying to the spammer and CC'ing the list. 1 from the list admin notifying that the list is looking for a bigger server to handle the load.

Hello,
How does one do the trick of hiding a folder's directory listing from a public browser?
i.e. Lets say the full address is www.mysite.com/php/magicphppage.php
Well I still need some other files to read and write to magicphppage.php I don't want the public to be able to simply type www.mysite.com/php/ and have all of my php files show up on a funky "virtual directory".
Thanks, Marcus

if you're using apache, there's a *much* easier/secure way of doing this.
setup an .htaccess file to restrict access to certain username/passwords.
check out both: man htaccess man htpasswd

Because you've asked an incredible amount of questions, 99% of which you could have solved on your own had you taken some time to look around, IMO abused this wonderful list, demanded answers which, if given, would "make you post less", something you "wouldn't like",and have in general pissed off many people on this list, including me...

HI I don't know why you are like G.Bush. But I have a vision that formed while scanning some of the lists recent postings. I see a man shoveling snow, again, from the sidewalk. While this is going on a kid is running around building a snow man, making a fort, throwing snow balls, hollering at friends, in general, having fun. Keep the fun going as long as you can. If you get good enough, you can hire someone else to do the shoveling.
Good Luck...

I'm trying to clean up a bunch of code on our website and was wondering if there was a best practice on using ocilogoff and/or ocifreestatement. We have a lot of queries within functions that have many multiple exit points. For some reason, I'm feeling like it's sloppy to have ocilogoff() and ocifreestatement() in 6 different places where the function exits. How do other people use these?
Thanks, Mike

I was just looking through the mailing list archives for some help with my gettext problem (basically, I can't get it to work).
Anyway, I came across your post:
> Thanks for the reply. This will not solve my problem. The problem is, for some > languages the sentence structure may be different. For example, the sentence > may need to be, > $greeting = "$first_name, welcome!" > as opposed to, > $greeting = "Welcome, $first_name!"
This can be handled by gettext. Change your english code to something like:
$greeting = sprintf( gettext("Welcome, %s!"), $first_name );
Once you run xgettext to extract all the strings, you'll end up with
msgid "Welcome, %s!" msgstr ""
So just convert it into whatever language, and move the "%s" as needed, eg:
msgstr "%s, bonjour!"
This even works with multiple "%s"'s, in later versions of PHP where you can rearrange the arguments in the format string, but not the way they are passed to sprintf():
msgid "%s is %d years old" msgstr "$2%d Jahrs habe $1%s"
Check www.php.net/sprintf for details.
Hope that helps.

(I posted this on php.i18n, but I'm hoping that the bigger audience here might get me an answer sooner).
Okay, here is what I've done:
I have a file /www/test.php:
<? putenv('LANG=en'); setlocale(LC_ALL, ''); bindtextdomain("messages", "./locale"); textdomain("messages");
echo _("Hello world."); ?>
I then do:
xgettext --keyword=_ -C /www/test.php
This makes "messages.po" which looks like:
# SOME DESCRIPTIVE TITLE.
# Copyright (C) YEAR Free Software Foundation, Inc.
# FIRST AUTHOR <EMAIL
ADDRESS>, YEAR.
#
#, fuzzy
msgid ""
msgstr ""
"Project-Id-Version: PACKAGE VERSION\n"
"POT-Creation-Date: 2001-08-01 17:13-0400\n"
"PO-Revision-Date: YEAR-MO-DA HO:MI+ZONE\n"
"Last-Translator: FULL NAME <EMAIL
ADDRESS>\n"
"Language-Team: LANGUAGE <LL
li.org>\n"
"MIME-Version: 1.0\n"
"Content-Type: text/plain; charset=CHARSET\n"
"Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit\n"
#: /www/test.php:9 msgid "Hello world." msgstr ""
I then do:
mkdir /www/locale/fr mkdir /www/locale/fr/LC_MESSAGES cp messages.po /www/locale/fr/LC_MESSAGES
I then edit that messages.po so it reads:
msgid "Hello world." msgstr "Bonjour monde."
Then:
msgfmt /www/locale/fr/LC_MESSAGES/messages.po -o /www/locale/fr/LC_MESSAGES/messages.mo
I then check the test.php file in a browser: it's in english.
I edit test.php to read:
<? putenv('LANG=fr'); /* <<< changed here */ setlocale(LC_ALL, ''); bindtextdomain("messages", "./locale"); textdomain("messages");
echo _("Hello world."); ?>
Reload in a browser, and it's still english. What am I missing?!?!

On which system?
You can fined for Win9x an Nt/2000 a lot of usefull info there: http://benoit.noss.free.fr/php/install-php.html
If like me you use 2000 you will save a lot of trouble by changing the way you are making the file association for php files. You need to have the shell->open->command directly under the .php key in the registry.
Hope it's help

Ok, I'm trying to seperate my php from my html.... the method I've been trying to use is like so:
$html = fread(fopen("htmlpage.html", "r"), filesize("htmlpage.html")); print $html;
This works perfectly fine, except if I want to use a variable....
lets say that my htmlpage.html includes the following:
<CENTER><H2>Hello! Your variable has a value of: $myvar</H2></CENTER>
and my test.php file is as follows:
<?php $myvar = "It works!"; $html = fread(fopen("htmlpage.html", "r"), filesize("htmlpage.html")); print $html; ?>
I would expect the output to be:
Hello! Your variable has a value of: It works!
but what I get is:
Hello! Your variable has a value of: $myvar
any hints/tips/suggestions? Is there another way that I should be doing this?
thanks!

I'm still trying to compress an entire directory on a linux server to be decompressed probably in windows client. I'm trying to use exec command and tar (compressor for linux), but I don't know how to do it. Can anybody pleeeaase help me?
I know I should test these, but sending a message is easier. :) If a connect the server using ftp_connect and ftp_login, when I try to create a directory using mkdir or ftp_mkdir or a file using fopen, will they belong to me or to nobody???
attached mail follows:
try using this syntax:
'tar cvzf name.tgz directory/'
here's a breakdown of the syntax
tar c = create new archive v = verbose (lists all files added as they are added) z = filter thru gzip f = filename of archive
tar by itself does not compress archives. you have to either specify the "z" or filter the .tar file thru a compressing program.
if you have Winzip, you're set... winzip understands tar/gz files and opens them just like they're regular zip files.

The Virtual() command works on my hosting server, I am running windows, idigostart perl/apache with php4 installed, how do I get this virtual() command to work on my machine, I assumed that the php4 I had installed was an apache module.
I have .shtml pages using includes for html, and "exec cgi" for executing .cgi scripts, as I am using php more and more is there an advantage in me changing my .shtml pages to php and use the equivalent include, and virtual commands ?? But I do need somehow to be able to use the virtual() command on my machine so that I can develop my scripts.

As far as I understand the idea behind PHPLIB, you should be off by exchanging the class db_mysql to db_oracle
From the manual http://phplib.netuse.de/documentation/documentation-2.html#ss2.1
You must change prepend.php3 to reflect the database interface that you are using: Change the require statement for db_mysql.inc appropriately.

I have a string can look like either of the following: <p>some stuff</p> <p align = "left">some stuff</p>
I want to use eregi_replace to take out the first p tag whether it be <p> or <p align......> with a space
I assumed that $str = eregi_replace ("<p.*>", " ",$str); but it matches the entire string and thus turns the whole string into one space. aparently regex will match the biggest possible match rather than the smallest my question is how do i get it to match the smallest.
thanx in advance..

Or $str = eregi_replace('<p[^>]*>', ' ', $str);
This matches <p (or <P), followed by any character string that DOESN'T include a >, then the trailing >.
Preg functions are faster, though. And, if you're interested in little speed tweaks, use single quotes - ' - rather than double quotes - " - here. With double quotes, PHP searches the quoted string for variables or escape characters to replace.

Glad to hear...steve's post was a good one...something else to think about: sometimes people go for the .*? method, and sometimes the [^>]*> way...they give the same results in most cases, but the .*? will match the least amount it can, using the dot...the negation will match anything...so, unless you have the s flag enabled, the . will not match a newline, while the negation will... Just a lil extra info

Hi Julian,
personally, I'd take out both tags, using something like:
$str = preg_replace("/<\/?p.*?>/i", "", $str);
Which gets rid of: <p> <p align="whatever"> </p>
Or any case insensitive matches. That's probably just me though ;)

shows two No's basicaly indicating that GetImageSize is not working
Here is the code:

My System: Windows NT4.0 SP6 (same happens on Windows XP) Apache 1.3.20 PHP 4.0.6 Sun Microsystems JDK 1.3.1
Java settings from php.ini: [Java] java.class.path="D:\php406\java\php_java.jar;D:\jdk\lib" java.home=D:\jdk java.library=D:\jdk\bin\hotspot\jvm.dll java.library.path=D:\php406\extensions\
Program I am running: <?php $system = new Java("java.lang.System"); print "Java version=".$system->getProperty("java.version")." <br>"; print "Java vendor=" .$system->getProperty("java.vendor")." <br>"; print "OS=".$system->getProperty("os.name")." ". $system->getProperty("os.version")." on ". $system->getProperty("os.arch")." <br>"; $formatter = new Java("java.text.SimpleDateFormat", "EEEE, MMMM dd, yyyy 'at' h:mm:ss a zzzz"); print $formatter->format(new Java("java.util.Date")); ?>
When I start the apache server service, the program runs ok (several reloads on the browser). But, if I close the browser and open it again, the program no longer runs and give me a "Fatal error: Unable to create Java Virtual Machine in d:\http\info.php3 on line 9". After several reloads, sometimes I get it to run again (just one time).
If I restart the apache server service, the program works again, but with the same behavior: if I close the browser window and open it again,
it does not work.
While all the above is happening, if a go to the command prompt and type: "d:\php406\php d:\http\myprogram.php3", it works fine, every time.
I ran out of options and, if anyone could help, I'll appreciate.
Tks, Marcos

Does anyone know of a more-or-less authoritative source that states that the common convention for HTTP GET/POST queries is a series of "name=value" pairs joined by "&" characters? I know I'm not just making this up, but I need to persuade someone that it is a commonly-accepted practice. Before you look... it's not in the HTTP RFCs.
Also...would it be accurate to say that life as a PHP and/or ColdFusion programmer is easier if the aforementioned HTTP GET/POSTs are performed in this manner? I know as a frequent user of Perl's CGI.pm module that I take this convention for granted. ---scott

Read the CGI Specification, or simply create a GET method form and submit it with a couple of different browsers and look at the URL it sends. There isn't much arguing with this.

Sure, but technically the separator shouldn't actually be & it should be & or simply ;
In PHP you can change this in your php.ini file with the arg_separator directive. But since most browsers don't send GET-method forms this way it is somewhat pointless unless you are building something where you have full control over the clients that access your server.
By the way, that was a pretty crazy cross-post!

Hi I have a question about parsing a page on another server to grab some headlines.
I want to search down the page until I find a string "-headlines-" then I want to grab everything between the next pair of <table></table> tags.
Anyone have a quick solution?

Is there a routine out there to strip all characters from a phone number except the numbers? I was going to write my own but figured there must already be one out there I can use. Thanks. Jeff Oien

Just as the solution to spray paint the m/b green made me smile, this did too.
This will strip out all characters except numerals at the beginning, right!

No, the ^ inside the [] means the negation of whatever's inside...so, it'll strip out anything except 0-9.

actually, it removes everything from $string that is not in the range 0-9. when a ^ is the first character inside [], it negates whatever is inside.
ereg_replace ("^[0-9]","",$string); would remove the first character from $string if it were in the range 0-9.

Hi all,
Does anyone know of any functions / tools / utilities / whatever that can be used to provide a timing of the execution of each line of a php program? I'm guessing this would probably be a test harness or a debug app or something.
I've used timing functions to record the execution of blocks of code or entire scripts, but I'm interested in taking it this one step further.
Anyone got any ideas?
TIA, Tom

If I am talking to other geeky types I explain the full history of "Personal Home Page" outgrowing it's name to become "PHP: Hypertext Processor" , recursive like "GNU" ete. etc.
If I am talking to non geeky types, and they bother to ask, I go with "Professional Hypertext Processor".

Hi all,
Is it possible to use here docs in php without expanding the variables. Its possible in perl, but perhaps there's a reason only this way is described. If there's no reason not to include this, would others find it useful to add as a feature?
Something like
$var = <<<'EOF' something with a $var EOF;
Then you could use eval. I have another way of doing this, just wanted to see if this was/could be possible.
Thanks, Jack Dempsey

Hello all,
I just discovered PHP this week. I'm reading about include statements. If I have a text file 2000 characters in length that I want to include, I would do this to include to whole file:
<?php include ("file.txt"); ?>
What would I do if I only wanted to include the first 250 characters and spaces of the file "text.txt?
Thanks

OPen the file and read in the required number of characters (short explanation). Have a look at the file handling functions.

I came up with this, but it doesn't work. Does text file need to be in a special format? It is 4 paragraphs of plain text created in notepad. ------------------------------------------------------------ <html> <head> <title>Include Abbreviated File</title> </head>
<body>
<pre> <?php $txtfile = fopen("text.txt", "r");
while (!feof($filePointer)) { $line = fgets($txtfile, 250); print $line; }
close($txtfile);
?> </pre>
</body> </html> ------------------------------------------------------------
Thanks

?? shouldn't that be $txtfile rather than $filepointer ??

Not quite. fgets will read up to length-1 bytes _OR_ a NewLine or EOF, whichever comes first. So if your first line is < 250 chars, it'll just read that line, then go on to the next one.
What you might want to do is something like
$line = ''; $fp = fopen("text.txt", "r"); while (!feof($fp)) { $line .= fgets($txtfile, 250); //append to $line print $line; if(strlen($line) >= 250) { break; // jump out when enough chars received } } $line = substr($line,0,250); // bring it down to 250 chars close($fp);
Or even better :-)
$line = ''; $fp = fopen("text.txt", "r"); $line = fread($fp, 250); close($fp);

For the ImageCopyMerge() function in the PHP manual (http://php.net/manual/en/function.imagecopymerge.php) it states at the top that "(PHP 4 >= 4.0.1)" is required in order to use it. However, farther down the page, it says "Note: This function was added in PHP 4.0.6"
Am I mis-reading something? Can anyone tell me which is the correct version of PHP in which this function was added?
Thanks.

In mySQL, how do I set an auto increment field to start at a certain number-let's say 10000? Do I just insert the first record with the desired number I wish to start with?

it appears to depend on the table type. i believe you are ok with MyISAM or InnoDB tables. check out the docs on table creation and column types at mysql.com.
