Great idea. I think a section discussing configuration options, suggested
configurations, and general info for ISPS would be great.
I just got a dedicated server and will be doing web hosting, and I think it
would be extremely helpful.

Perhaps a section in the manual dedicated to ISP related information?

anyone know why this isnt working for me?
if (isset($PHP_AUTH_USER) && isset($PHP_AUTH_PW)) { CheckCredentials($PHP_AUTH_USER,$PHP_AUTH_PW); unset ($PHP_AUTH_USER, $PHP_AUTH_PW); } else if ($AuthAction) { auth($AuthAction); };
If someone submits false credentials, the page keeps $PHP_AUTH_USER and $PHP_AUTH_PW, and won't allow another login attempt until the browser is closed. Is there another way to effectively "unset" the variables?

I do this, with fopen() and fpassthru() ...
$im = fopen( "myImage.jpg", "r" ); if( !$im ){ // FILE WASN'T FOUND } else { // ALL GOOD - SEND IT TO THE BROWSER fpassthru( $im ); } fclose( $im );
For the sake of simplicity, I left off additional error checking I do ... but this is the core of the idea. The image functions (http://www.php.net/manual/en/ref.image.php) work well too. When just pushing out an unmodified image, the above code has proven simplest for me.

The only problem is detecting that the data is identical in the first place. If I have to do a select with 7 AND statements to see if I have identical data, I'm going to take a huge performance hit. I was hoping this had been done at a very low level, but it doesn't look like it. Maybe it's just as unrealistic at a low level, but I could swear I had heard of this feature before.
Oh well.

PS. I didn't mention this before, but a link table (ie a relational structure) is not possible in my situation.

I'm trying to get IMAP4, krb4, and php4 working happily together.
I've got the krb4 aware c-client working with php 4.0.x as a DSO and static server module with apache 1.3.x + mod_ssl.
Here's the problem.
c-client knows to use kerberosIV authentication if the KRBTKFILE environment variable is set. I'm setting it by adding by prepending this (using auto_prepend_file) to the front of every php page:
<?php
$krbtkfile = "/ticket/kerb." . getenv("REMOTE_USER"); putenv("KRBTKFILE=$krbtkfile");
?>
This works fine with PHP compiled as a CGI, because it gets a fresh copy of the environment everytime it's invoked.
If we use the server module version, it can't keep the ticket files straight. It reports that the ticket file is set to /ticket/kerb.USERNAME (which is what it's supposed to do), but in practice that's not what it's using.. say we have three users, Tom, Dick and Harry. They authenticate in that order..
Tom's ticket file contains a kerberos ticket-granting-ticket (TGT), credentials for his imap server, credentials for Dick's imap server, and credentials for Harry's imap server.
Dick's ticket contains a TGT, his imap credentials, Harry's imap credentials, and Tom's credentials.
Harry's ticket contains a TGT.
it only gets messier as more people log into the server.
/something/ is caching the value of KRBTKFILE and applying it inappropriately. I'm not sure if it's c-client, or PHP. I was wondering if there was anything I could on the PHP side of things that could further ensure that the right ticket (the right instance of the krbtkfile variable?) gets used for the right user? Store it in a session? We don't currently use kerberos 5, but I'm concerned that it will behave similarly and play mix and match with the krb5 ticket files.
We had the same issue with PHP 3.0.x, but switched to the CGI version to get around it. We migrate to the apache server module version to try and get some extra speed out of our mail application, and to take some load off of the server.
Does anyone have any suggestions?

You should be asking questions like this on the php-dev list. And post a code snippet there as well so we can see what sort of argument you are trying to pass in. Normally you would pass a zval ** here.

I downloaded and installed PHP 4.06. The readme file says that the auto install prog setsup PHP to work with PWS and sets up php.ini. However, when I look at php.ini, there are no entries for these two parameters
; The root of the PHP pages, used only if nonempty. doc_root= ; The directory under which PHP opens the script using /~usernamem used only ; if nonempty. user_dir=
is that good? I put in c:\inetpup\wwwroot for doc root, but it's still not working. Is there somethin I'm missin?

Uh? Uhmm... Is this inside a function? Or is the server running PHP in safe mode (dunno if this has anything to do with it...)?

Check if register_globals is off in php.ini. If it is, you will need to access it through the $HTTP_SERVER_VARS array, e.g., $HTTP_SERVER_VARS['PHP_SELF'].

Easiest to check this (and a load of other settings), is to create a small PHP file, which contains nothing but:
<?php phpinfo(); ?>

Well,
T1 INNER JOIN T2 For each row R1 of T1, the joined table has a row for each row in T2 that satisfies the join condition with R1.
T1 LEFT OUTER JOIN T2 First, an INNER JOIN is performed. Then, for each row in T1 that does not satisfy the join condition with any row in T2, a joined row is returned with NULL values in columns of T2. Thus, the joined table unconditionally has at least one row for each row in T1.
and as you can see join condition is nothing to do with equality of respective columns, which means you can state any kind of join condition (non-equal as well as equal join)

Hi, all.
I am using Apache and PHP. Today, I found a very strange thing about the browser IE4.0/5.0 (Internet Explorer). I have a PHP page, which will use "system" call to activate some backend program to generate a PDF file (this "system" call process will take about 30~60 seconds), the strange thing is: if I am using IE 4.0/5.0, I will get several files instead of one PDF file!! it seems that the IE kept refreshing itself automatically(keeps sending request to the server), the more strange thing is: the IE couldn't display the PDF file, and however, if I close the browser, and open the IE again, I could display the PDF file using the same URL! is there a way to fix this at the server side?
If I am using netscape, there is no such problem.
Any input is highly appreciated.
Thanks, George

Two questions: 1. Can I tell a form to post to itself without specifying the name of the web page? 2. If I have a function on one page called by another, will this resolve correctly?

As someone who has little programming experience I'd have to say jump right in and forget the "GUI" (I'm not aware of any IDE for PHP). PHP is pretty easy (to learn, becoming a master is something else I suspect) and there is always outstanding support either by reading this newsgroup's archive or posting a question if you don't find an answer. I've been dabbling for close to a year now and have yet had a need to post any questions. I have invariably found the solution after a quick search.
There are a number of good books as well. For the novice (I speak with some authority here) try Julie C. Meloni's "PHP Essentials".
If you're looking for an editor try PHPEd, http://www.soysal.com/PHPEd/index.php3
And listen to what the experts (not me) have to say.
Good luck,
Matt

Oh God, please hurry and release a stable PHP with Zend 2.0!! I &$hate &$this &$bs &$and &$can't get it to work &$at &$all!
Thank you, Greg
P.S. If any one of you has figured out how to do this: <?php class a { var $parent; function a(&$b) { $this->parent = &$b; } }
class b { var $as; var $parent; function b(&$c) { $this->parent = &$c; for($i=0;$i<5;$i++) { $this->as[$i] = &new a($this); } } }
class c { var $bs; var $test; function c() { for($i=0;$i<5;$i++) { $this->bs[$i] = &new b($this); } } } $foo = &new c(); $foo->test = 1; $foo->bs[3]->cs[2]->parent->parent->test = 5; print $foo->test."<br>"; print $foo->bs[3]->cs[2]->parent->parent->test; // output: // 1 // 5 // and should be: // 5 // 5 ?>
let me know *please*. I have 3 objects, form, table, and field for database abstraction that need this linking.

Hey all. I just started venturing into functions. I have a function that displays a form, but I have a problem with getting the multiple strings back after the submit. Im tryed a return statement at the bottom of the function, but it cannot take more than one string. I tried turning the array into a string and returning just the string made sure that the string name was in the global list, still no luck. Is it even possible to return mulitple values from a function?? Thanks

You can only return one variable from a function, but that variable can be an array.
This is probably obvious, but you are assigning the result of the function to a variable? Eg
$result = my_function($my_parameter, $my_parameter);

I was doing it like so ==> $string = array(var1, var2...); return string;
I also tried to implode the array into a string and return the result, but no go.

Perhaps if you could show some of the code?

Hrm - undefined function top()
?? <FORM> ??
But the rest of it returns what I would expect - a comma followed by two | - given that I don't have the values referenced in the array. And you won't either, as they aren't global and aren't passed as parameters.

top(); is a function that displays a menu, that works. <form> is where the form goes. In its current setup less the array/implode/explode/foreach loop I can get it to echo 'a' return that I specify. But its no good, when I have 7 seven fields in the form to process.....

Why are you putting the form inside the function? There surely must be a better way to achieve what you want (which is not clear from the snippet). .

Im beginning to think that functions aren't all that cracked up to be. I may as well go back to my old "non function" way of coding.
I was displaying the form in the function because the application Im using currently displays forms in functions. Ill try and see what I can do with this new found knowledge called 'functions'.....

If you are trying to upload a file, I think you need to have a hidden field for MAX_FILE_SIZE - check the Handling File Uploads section of the manual.

Use extract ,which makes available variables of the same name as the fields in your table.
$result = mysql_query($sql); while($row = mysql_fetch_array($result)) { extract($row); echo "$listnum $agentname $streetNum $streetName <br>"; }

Try changing your embed parameter to 0...
$font = pdf_findfont($pdf, "Times New Roman", "winansi", 0);

Sorry, I couldn't think of a well-worded, descriptive title for what I'm trying to do.
As I believe I mentioned before, I use PHP and MySQL to keep a journal. all the entries are accessed by /index.phtml?id=23 , where "23" is replaced by the id of the entry you want.
A "problem" I'm having is that some search engines' spiders (google, most notably), won't navigate through all the different ?id= variants, even though they are all linked together.
The solution I thought of would be to make /23.phtml point to the same location, by parsing the id out of the url. Then the spiders would crawl through all the individual pages and store them all. I got this to work just fine.
Now what I would like is, rather than creating 100+ files (even if all they contain is an include(); ), to ake a way where any /n.phtml brings up the same batch of code.
really te only soltion I could come up with was to change my ErrorDocument in .htaccess to point a 404 to a custom page in the directory, containing the url parsing code, or, if it detects a non-numeric file, display a default 404 message.
The problem with that was that apache would actually redirect the browser, and the URL would be replaced with /404.phtml, losing the variable/ url. Also $http_referrer would be suspiciously blank.
Anyone know a way I can succeed at the above? Or, even more delightful, a better way to achieve it?
thanks --kevin

There is a really simple solution. Replace /index.phtml?id=23 with /index/23 and use the following line of code in your index file:
$path_array = explode('/', $REQUEST_URI);
Apache will find index.phtml if it is in your directory index configuration line and get that file. The line of code I gave you will split the uri up so you can specify $id=$path_array[2]; and retrieve your file that way. If index.phtml is not in your directory index line then you must tell apache to treat any occurance of index in your url as a file with a .htaccess file. Given the task at hand and given I'm confused about why there are different length numbers, is there one particular option that allows for better change checking..or is it simply a matter of longer is better...I mean the longer the checksum number the better.

Hi folks,
I had the ... dubious ... pleasure of running some PHP code on an IIS system recently and noticed a peculiar occurrence...
I called setCookie(), and something in it caused IIS to crash. Dead. Gone. Shuffled off this mortal coil. Stuffed. Like a parrot. :)
As an alternative, I instered manual Header() commands to get the same effect as setCookie(). Same thing. Dead. Stuffed. Etc.
Has anyone encountered this kind of muckup...? And if so, what did you do about it?

What are the pro's and con's of these two methods? Can anybody suggest any pointers considering stability, efficiency, and easy upgrades?
Thanks in advance.

In the short run, its faster to install packages, and allows for easy upgrades. In the long run, if you compile from scratch you will get to know the system, you'll know more how it works, and it is (in my experience) MUCH more stable to compile it from source. I've installed PHP/MySQL/Apache combo on maybe 200 machines, and the numbers are for compiling everything from scratch.

I have never used a binary version (rpm or tar) as I use slackware. Both PHP and Mysql have been recently added to the distribution.So I have been using src all the time. U'll certainly have some performance gain by compiling the src. But the default Redhat 7.1's php distribution is very good. It is ready out of box for every thing. GD, Mysql, IMAP etc. You don't just have to configure anything. /Chandu > I am working on setting up a Red Hat Linux Web Server. Although Fred's comments appear rhetorical, the suggestion has some merit. Anyone have a feel for how many PHP devotees are out there? How many people subscribe to this list? Do these numbers make it feasible to ask for a $1-10 contribution? How about $0.02 from each of the 7 million domains running PHP?
There, that was my 2 cents worth. Or was that a 2 bit opinion? (I'll leave the next joke to the group)
Also, I'll be proactive. Send all monies to me ;)

To continue this (speculative) train of thought:
Would it be feasible to collect some kind of contest entry fee, either instead of or in addition to donations toward the prize? If maximum participation were the goal (and I'm not sure that it would/should be, but for the sake of argument...), it might be a way to get entrants intestered in recruiting more entrants by reminding them that more developers in the contest, the bigger the reward to be won by one of them...
As for collecting funds for such an endeavor, FWIW I (and presumably others) would be more likely to give if it were through the PHP.net group or Zend than through any third-party. At least then if the contest were to fall through, I'm confident that the money would still be well-spent on furthering PHP development/marketing.

it usually means the apache httpd wasn't found in /usr/bin Some distributions throw things in wierd places
do a 'locate httpd' (quicker) or 'find \ -name httpd' (longer) to find out where its situated
then configure paths accordingly.
Remember if you are going to use dso's apache must be compiled to use them that way.

Please advice me as to what may be causing this problem. The error message is sent before the headers and it generates an error that stops script execution. Maybe I can trap the error so the script can continue.

This works fine but if I try to loop through the array again in the same script the array seems to be empty (i,e, the loop douse not do any interations). Do I need to reset the array pointer at the begining? Is there something else I need to do?
Regards, Ben
attached mail follows:
I've gotten the year from the following code on page one:
date_array=getdate(); / / today's date info foreach ($date_array as $key=>$val) { $key=$val; } $current_year=$date_array[year];
I've used the $current_year variable throughout a form on the first page and the variable is picked up without problem everywhere it's used. I've brought in stored data to display on this same page using $php_self in a select box, and the $current_year variable still works fine. Finally, I've got another select box which calls a new page using get (I tried post, and it didn't work either), and the $current_year disappears never to be seen again. Perplexing, no?
attached mail follows:
Richard, I let this problem sit for awhile, did some other work, and looked
at it again. This time, I printed out all the values and found that some
values =INF. No wonder it died. Since I'm making a log-normal chart,
occasionally I'm trying to calculate the log of zero--an infinitely small
number which can't be calculated! I did try the error_log statement but my
ISP puked on the syntax.

Hi folks I just wonder as I saw someone useing session with global and some don't. What is the reason to use session together with global? Like this: session_start(); global $test session_register('test');
I look up in manual using keyword "global", but could not find anything near this. Jack
