    You are on windows, aren't you? I remember seeing such a thing some two
    years ago. It vanished after php reinstallation. After that I did the
    right thing and had microsoft vanish from my life forever.

    Anyway, it was something in the ereg that gets the symbols to substitute
    in the template. You should look there. But before you turn your HTML
    templates upside down do try and reinstall PHP. As far as I can remember
    everything worked by taking away the {} containers around the symbol
    (and in the ereg expression). Which is to say you should go thru
    thousands of HTML fragments. But really, it's been a long time.

    As for version problems, I use FastTemplate since ages and never saw
    anything like that on a LinuxBox. Right now I am running the last
    version on the machine I am writing from. And FastTemplate runs with no
    problems.

    There's a PHP Pocket Reference in this office... (O'Reilly, ISBN

    Ask your sysadmin (I can almost bet the answer will be NO, I have to
    tell you).

    Apache should be running on your system as user nobody, and most
    probably does NOT have the permission to write anything at all (apart

    Thank you for the reply (I don't speak or read Russian if that's what that
    other stuff is). I forgot to mention that the server is a Win2k server with
    IIS 5 running. Obviously I'm not the server admin (otherwise I would be
    using Apache).

    I hope that I can get permissions, but I bet you're right. Probably just
    have to create a database, which I planned on doing (and know how to). I
    really did want to use XML though, oh well.

    Thanks for the response,

    99% you are right, it will definitely be too long for a GET. Besides,
    before writing the process_this.php?this=$this thing your *$this* should
    be serialized. Watch the docs for it.

    Most probably you have access to some database, so you can just save
    your serialized version to a table (the type depends on the size of your
    serialized object) and just pass a pointer to the row for the process
    script to retrieve and unserialize the object back to normal life.

    Just one more thing: if your object contains any reference they will
    definitely become invalid, methinks. And I would never do object
    serializing if I expected performance to be there. But this really
    depends on the nature of your object, so handle the suggestion with
    care, it's just way too generic.

    This can be pretty risky if your object contains references to external
    objects. Works okay for insulated instances, though. Yet I would suggest
    not trusting sessions with objects.

    You never know how your class is going to evolve on time and you never
    know how sessions are going to evolve on time either (just think of the
    register globals thingy).

    I'd rather map object attributes to a good old table of mine and be sure
    I can build it back whenever I want to, no matter what surprises lie
    ahead on technology boulevard. Well, almost sure :)

    But why bother? Certainly you would not think it secure. Use https for security, anything else is a mirage afaik.

    There is a module in Perl that encrypts and unencrypts post/get data intended for hidden fields. I guess it uses a checksum as well.

    I personally prefer to just create a session and keep it on the server side.

    Oh heck, but now as I read your email closer I guess you are asking how it can be done from a form the first time. Perhaps with javascript but then use post instead of get and of course make
    it via a secure connection if security is a concern.

    You could use POST rather than GET, which would hide it from someone
    watching over your shoulder, but the data is still there as plaintext.

    Try taking the pass by reference & off of the result set. The man page for odbc_fetch_into states: As of PHP 4.0.5 the result_array does not need to be passed by reference any longer.

    I've used the code below on 4.1 and 4.2. If that doesn't work, you might say what php version is on each machine, and what line 82 is.

    Wait though, I'm already doing this myself. To explain further, what I

    form with say 10 questions, and I want to define each question and set of
    possible answers (input types and ranges) manually, and have the action
    script automatically check that the input types and ranges for each question

    Why not just make the form's input names "var[]" then PHP will make them
    into an array:

    for ($i = 1; $i < 100; $i++)
    {
     if ($var[$i -1] > 0)
      echo "Yup. ". $var[$i - 1] ." is greater than 0.";

    Thanks very much in advance.

[/snip]

    I am not going to go at this from a JAVA vs. PHP viewpoint as each have strengths in certain applications. What I will do is evangelize about PHP for the application you describe.

    We regularly use PHP for "Enterprise Level" applications for a number of reasons including development time, application speed, modularity, cross-platform stability, usability in many situations (for instance, we have many PHP functions that run as standalone scripts or in conjunction with other shell scripting languages that can be called from timed events, such as those found in CRON jobs and other command line executions). I will give you an instance;

    Retrieve files from remote location each day, Extract needed files each day, Parse files, Import parsed files into database, Do multiple reports in multiple versions (Excel, HTML, PDF, etc), Request needed files from database, Put those files into usable form for billing application, Forward those files to the appropriate location for billing.

    Eventually we will move our entire billing, customer service, aging and collection information to a PHP application(s) running in a set of web-interfaces...replacing legacy software, some of which still runs as a DOS application. PHP is a terrific solution for developing such a large scale application as modules can be added to the application either singularly or in groups to add needed functionality to the overall application without compromising other modules utilizing the same data. We receive millions of records each week that are handled by the PHP applications, it has the needed horsepower.

    From a testing and approval standpoint it allows the cycle to be shortened from conception to production, a very good thing. Errors can be quickly found and corrected while new functionality does not require rewriting tons of code. If you plan carefully each module can remain independent enough from other modules, allowing modules to be added or depricated without affect the performance of other modules. Sound database planning is also key to this.

    As for the PDA's PHP plays well with XSLT, CSS, and any other formatting tool that you can think of to deliver reports. The same report data can be formatted by PHP using these tools for many different interfaces (again, modularity).

    PHP, to my way of thinking, is easier to maintain for others who may have to come in contact with your code after you have gone down the road to another project. It is well documented and features tons of extensions that can be added to the core for increased functionality (i.e. http://www.phpclasses.org/mirrors.html?page=%2Findex.html).

    And finally, you can use JAVA with PHP should the need arise, therefore not locking yourself into a particualr technology and allowing you to flex the strengths of appropriate technologies for appropriate tasks.

    My .02¢

    Jay

    attached mail follows:

    I agree with the other reply to your question. My thoughts could be summarized as follows:

    - Java solution would be more expensive and involved to build and maintain. - PHP would be cheaper and quicker to build and maintain.

    - Java would require more resources on your server. - PHP is light weight and fast.

    - Java is a mature OO language. So, if designed properly, would be easier to modify and/or extend functionality. - In my opinion, PHP is not a mature OO language. It might get there sometime in the future. However, PHP is very well suited for the goals it was designed for.

    My choice would be Java. (Keep in mind that it will be easier to sell Java to the corporate guys. Some executives shy away from open source.)

    Good luck!!!

    Hey,

    for good (and funny) tutorial on cookies: http://www.htmlgoodies.com/tutors/cookie.html

    you can find some examples here: http://www.php.net/manual/en/function.setcookie.php

    A web connection is made by two machines: 1) the server, where the site is 2) the client, that is, the machine at which sits the user

    Once the client sends a request for a web page (an URL, in tech language) some sort of program gets executed on the server. At the very least a program called "Web Server" will receive the request, look for a file that has that name and send it back to the client.

    But usually the file does not end in .html, so something more gets executed, like PHP.

    Well, this new thing being executed may need to write data somewhere, and it usually does write it in a database (that is, a set of tables). When it does so, it writes data on the server, that is, the very same machine it is running on.

    But for some reasons it is sometimes useful to write data on the remote machine, that is, the client. This process of writing data on the client machine is called "sending a cookie".

    The client machine may actually accept or refuse doing so, the server cannot know that, so no important data should ever be written in a cookie, as it may not get written.

    Now suppose I (the program coder) need to now that you like to receive pages with lots of flowers and hate to receive pages with lots of machine code diagrams. I put a menu on my page and let you choose, right? Only it would be nice, if the next time you come to visit the site you were immediately presented the pages you like.

    But, unfortunately, I have no way to stock this information on the server, because I cannot associate it with you in anyway (thank god, otherwise bye bye privacy).

    So what I do is writing on a cookie that you like flower pages and hate machine code diagrams.

    Next time the client machine (your comp) will connect to my site it will first look in its cookies list. It will find that there is a cookie for this particular site and send it to the server along with the request. Bingo! now I know you hate machine code diagrams.

    I oversimplified, of course, cookies have much more than just this. Thay have expiration dates, limits on directory tree validity and so on, but that's the root of it.

    I got it fixed by changing the Max Execution Time in the php.ini file... However, this is ridiculously slow... Does anyone else have any idea how I can run through a 4 MB+ Database checking 2 fields Without having to wait longer than 30 seconds... If it was a simple text file it would have been easy using different search strategies (possibly even Hashing Keys...)

    Please give me some suggesstions...

    I'm a bit confused... what SQL statement are you executing against the database? It kinda looks like you're returning every row in the database, and using PHP to find the one that matches. Why can't you use a WHERE clause?

    djo

    attached mail follows:

    Index your database on the name and password fields and issue this query

    Select count(*) where name = '$namevar' and password = '$passvar'

    If count > 0 you have a hit, proceed with rest of authentication, else send appropriate error msg. Whatever you do, DON'T make sequential searches through a database. They are agonizingly slow.

    I am new to PHP & Sessions myself.

    But I think $_SESSION['varname'] may be what you are looking for.

    e.g. $_SESSION['count'] = 2;

    From the work I have done, I have found that in the event PHP doesn't do this automatically (such as in some javascript code), you need to ensure you include a PHPSESSID varible in the URL something like:

    print "www.mysite.net?PHPSESSID= " . session_id();

    I have read that, I am still confused, I have made it so that the session_start is at the top of all the pages, and I can't get some of the variables out of the script (i.e. I set a variable with session_register('user')) and on the next page I could not get the user variable out of the session on the next page.. does that help out? Thank You, Mike

    Not sure - but i've heard that this works:

    $mbox = imap_open ("{localhost:995/pop3/tls/novalidate-cert}", "user_id", "password");

    So maybe it does, no promises though :)

    header() simply sends response headers - I.e adds/replaces server headers - it has no effect on request headers sent by the client.

    If, for some reason, you want to alter the user-agent you've received from the client (for testing maybe?) you can do this:

    echo $_SERVER['HTTP_USER_AGENT']; $_SERVER['HTTP_USER_AGENT']='Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 7.0; Windows NT 5.1; .NET CLR 1.0.3705)'; echo $_SERVER['HTTP_USER_AGENT'];

    Question on optimizing code for quicker runtimes. Which is quicker (this is on a webpage also..NOT commandline)?

    <?php if ($a){ echo 'abc'; } ?>

    OR

    <?php if ($a) { ?> abc <?php } ?>

    Both do the same thing and are legit but wondering which is better from an optimization standpoint (NOT interested in readability or *proper* code here)

    I'm just guessing but I would think there would be no difference. The only way I think there would be a differnce is if you did many many echo statements as opposed to one echo or one ?>output block<? becuase it would have to parse that many more instances of the function. Again.. just a guess. -Kevin

    The difference is very marginal. Write whichever makes more sense in the context. Short tidbits just don't matter. Larger stretches of text are easier to just send out as is rather than echo.

    Because the difference is going to be undetectable, this would probably be a question that only someone really familiar with the engine would be able to answer with any sort of assurance.

    My bet is that the second method is faster in theory, because switching in/out of PHP is likely marginally faster than executing the echo function. Maybe if you create some scripts that loop through these statements 10,000 times each and measure the time with microtime(), you can get a more affirmative answer and let the list know your results.

    Happy hacking.

    I could be wrong, but I seem to remember reading somewhere that using ?> text <? is actually just shorthand for echo " text "; as far as the php engine itself is concerned.

    Again I'm not positive, but if this is the case it would coincide with the comment made earlier that they are in fact the same speed, but that outputting a large amount of text through a single ?> <? would be slightly faster than using numerous echo commands.

    What I did was set up a mail rule where every email I get from him I forward back to him then delete it. So basically he's getting the email that's going to the list then he's getting my forwarded copy. Gawd, I love technology. ;p

    I assume by straight line he means disregarding the curvature of the earth, which at such small distances would be insignificant but add a lot of calculation.

    What formula are you using to calculate distance?

    You see, the Earth is not flat :-)

    So, after a certain distance, the error margin of the curvature of the Earth becomes quite significant.

    There are several formulas you could be using...

    Geographics and Cartographers have been known to challenge each other to duels over the relative merits of these formulas, so be careful which one you pick :-)

    A quick search for "longitude, latitude, distance, and Great Circle" should turn up several options, with explaining text about their relative merits. (Or it did when I did this same thing years ago...)

    In the end, though, *I* ended up just using Cartesian distance, since anybody searching for things "close by" is not going to be worried about curvature of the Earth in their calculations.

    So, yeah, it's way wrong for those establishments thousands of miles away... So what? Nobody cares about how far is the Jiffy Lube 2000 miles away from them :-)

    In *SOME* applications, you'd need a *MUCH* more accurate formula -- But if you're searching for "nearby" establishments, forget worrying about the long-distance error.

    The performance on the trigonometric functions for the "better" formula were intolerable, even in PostgreSQL user-defined functions. YMMV.

    But there's just no way you're going to want to download all the establishments to PHP and do the calculations there. Dog-slow.

    You'll *HAVE* to get them into SQL some way.

    Also, don't even think of doing a JOIN with your establishments and the Zip Code table.

    It's rule-breaking time. :-)

    Add long/lat columns to your establishments and fill them in with the Zip Code data if you haven't already.

    Again, YMMV, but the JOIN of 2000 music venues and the ~10K Zip codes was intolerably slow.

    > What I have is a database of establishments and their corresponding >latitudes and longitudes, and I need to have users enter their own >postal / zip code, and have the system calculate which establishments >fall into a set range ($range) from their location. Not only does it >need to find the establishments, it needs to calculate the distances >(straight line, of course).

    So long as you keep that "distance" small -- a few score miles, the curvature should not be that big a deal...

    You will need a "fudge factor" of "arc" (long/lat) to miles to divide your Cartesian long/lat "distance" (using the term distance very loosely).

    Also note that the closer you get to the North/South Pole, the worse your error rate will be, since the longitude lines converge.

    > Now, I have dug through the PHP archives, but there is no single >clear explanation of how to do this, from beginning to end. I will >start by putting down what I need, and then maybe other people can >contribute to this and in the end we will have the solution, nice and >tidy, in one place.

    There really can't be a tidy solution, due to the underlying formulas' relative merits and the performance issues, and the widely different requirements of the definition of "distance"...

    Still, a summary of the options would be nice.

    >*** NOTE: I know doing this in PHP will be SLOW, but I do not want to >write a MySQL user-defined function and recompile it and blah, blah, >blah... (unless someone wants to cover that aspect!!! :D)

    If you switch to PostgreSQL instead of MySQL, you can define a function in PostgreSQL for *MUCH* better performance. (Actually, PostgreSQL may even have a good built-in long/lat distance function by now...)

    > Step 1: Take the postal / zip code that the user entered, and >search the national postal / zip code database (which I already have) >and return its corresponding latitude and longitude ($userLat and >$userLong). > > Step 2: ??? > > Step 3: Return the establishments information to the user, complete >with the distances to them, ordered by smallest distance to largest.

    For sure, limit the number of responses. In fact, let the *USER* decide how far they will travel. Somebody in Idaho is probably willing to drive a lot further than, say, a Manhattan resident...

    For the short distances you are talking about, you could *ALMOST* get away with:

    # Assume $longitude/$latitude is the user's location. select name, address from establishments where sqrt((longitude - $longitude)*(longitude - $longitude) + (latitude - $latitude)*(latitude - $latitude))

    IE, the plain old cartesian (x, y) distance from Algebra II class.

    You could then take those results and divide by a "fudge factor" of arcs to miles (long/lat to mile conversion) to get a pretty close approximation for *NEARBY* establishments.

    Once you get past a few score miles, though, it will be noticeably "off"

    Seek out the formulas as I suggested, though, and you'll be able to get pretty accurate distances, but you'll have to use the Trigonometric functions MySQL might not have, so then you get to review Trigonometry and play some identity function games to convert it to the ones that MySQL *does* have, assuming it has any. If MySQL has *no* Trig, your options just got real easy, if not attractive, to choose...

    Sample with the Cartesian crappy fake "distance" and fudge factor I chose:

    http://chatmusic.com/venues.htm

    When I calculate LA to Chicago, it's way off, but so what? Nobody needs it to work that far away if they're using the application for what it's intended.

    To unsubscribe, visit: http://www.php.net/unsub.php

    Although this has been pointed out to Erik by several different people several different times, he has proceeded to flood the list with e- mails with long subject lines similar to the subject line on this message and no body. There have been at least 25 or more in the past 5 minutes.

    This is a quite large mailing list so no doubt thousands of people are beginning to get quite annoyed with Mr. Hegreberg. If there's anything you can do to assure that he won't continue doing this, it would be much appreciated.

    Usually people just say "Help I can't get off the list!!" and then some other people write back to them "you idiot, read the bottom of every single message" and then that's the end of it.

    Can you ask the corporate web site people to insert a distinctive HTML comment just before the image? It would just take them a second, have no impact on their users, and make your job much easier.

    If the filename is in fact a timestamp then you can find it using a brute force method. All you need is a for() loop and fopen(). Start your search at midnight the previous night and add one second to the timestamp each itteration. If the fopen() function returns something other than FALSE then you know you've found a file. There are only 86400 seconds in a day.. peanuts. Probably take PHP two minutes to run through, if that. You could put the script on a cron job to have it give you the new filename each morning. You may even find that the script building the image file is also on a timer.. so after a few days you may be able to skip the brute force method and simply predict what the next filename will be.

    Hows that sound?

    I assume it's not as simple as the year/month/day...

    They crammed in the hour minute and seconds as well???

    Cuz if it's YYYYMMDD.jpeg, just do:

    <?php $filename = date('Ymd') . ".jpg"; # Snag $filename ?>

    >closer to the bottom of the page. How do I walk through the contents of the >page searching for the image starting further down the page than from the >beginning if the page? > >2) Is there a better way of trying to find/strip the image name in the page >contents than by using the strpos & substr functions? If so how?

    Look at the basic structure of their HTML.

    Is there any comment or TABLE tag or something that's always right before that IMG tag?

    If, so, you can probably do:

    <?php $html = file('corporate.com'); $html = implode('', $html); $html = explode('SOMETHING UNIQUE HERE', $html); ?>

    At this point, the IMG tag will always be in the same place in the $html array.

    Might be $html[7] or $html[53] but it will be there.

    Also, you can probably just do a single substr() at that point to get the filename.

    >3) Once I've found the image file name, is there then some way that I can >download the image from the corporate site to our local site? If so, how do >I do this? If I can download the image locally, then I can rewrite the code >to check for the existence of the file locally before going out and >accessing the corporate site every time.

    Oh, yeah, definitely cache the image.

    <?php $file = file("corporate.com/$image.jpg"); $image = implode('', $file); $cache = fopen("corporatecache.jpg", 'w') or die("Couldn't opne image for writing"); if ($cache){ $wrote = fwrite($cache, $image); if ($wrote != strlen($image)){ die("Only wrote $wrote bytes of " . strlen($image)); } ?>

    You'll need to make corporatecache.jpg writeable by PHP.

    That's not good...

    Ideally, you'd have that *outside* the web tree, and then use PHP to suck it in again, and check that it "looks like" an image before you do that. Just call http://php.net/getimagesize on it, and if that says it's a JPEG, that should be a pretty good check.

    I looked around the net, and php API list, and found that i can only read the JPEG header markers with exif_read_data. Is there a exif_write_data function?

    You're basically paging through results. You have a SQL statement to get the data - just limit the statement to only draw information applicable to the page you're on. Like this:

    select * from table limit 0,10;

    That will select the first 10 records.

    Then you can use variables.

    if (empty($P)) $P = 0; $C = 10;

    select * from table limit $P, $C

    Make a link at the bottom

    $NextPage = $P + $C; if ($P > $C) $PreviousPage = $P - $C; else $PreviousPage = 0;

    print "<a href='next.php?P=$NextPage'>Next Page</a>";

    You get the idea...

    Ok.. what I have is a database of first names and last names, and some other columns that don't matter here.

    A form is presented to a user, lets them enter a bunch of names, attributes of the person, etc.

    After submission, each record is checked against the current database to see if the name currently exists, or names similar to it exist.

    If so, it gives the option of either:

    a) entering the new record or b) selecting one of the existing records

    Example:

    Enter your names, positions: Joe Schmoe, LW Random Guy, RW

    (submit button)

    After DB check for existing users:

    Found:

    () Joey Schmoe Click radio button to se this record () Create New Record

    No matches found for Random Guy, must be a new user.

    (submit button)

    My problem is keeping this data consistent form by form, and updating the data when an existing record is selected instead of creating a new one (the existing data needs to go into another table, so I need to grab the user id # of the existing record, etc)

    Any thoughts on how to approach this? After the first form, should I make a multi-dimensional array, and have the second form update/change the elements of it? I haven't used any PHP arrays in this yet, just been messing with the HTML form array stuff..

    Sorry if this is confusing.. if any part needs clarification, please let me know.

    Thanks, Chad

    It sounds like you're trying to do too many things at once. If you create a form to accept entries, process the entries when the form is submitted. Check each entry and only add ones that don't already exist in the database. After that, if you want to display results, start at the beginning of the array from the submitted form and pull information from the database for each entry - by this point every one of them should have an account and it's just a matter of listing their information... Sorry, rambling a little here... did that all make sense?

    "Hex" isn't enough detail.

    In order to do this you'll need to figure out the specific format that ZPL II wants.

    How many bits per pixel? Any prologue? Interlacing? Row-first or column-first? etc. etc.

    Actually, some of us don't check mail from this list until the evenings. By the time I'm receiving the 1000 messages from my public email addresses, it's far too late to create a filter.

    He may as well consider his email address useless now. I don't think many people will hesitate to subscribe him to every ounce of spam they can.

    No you cant.

    All Received:, Date:, Message-ID headers are added to the message at the SMTP server... Hence, any halfly decent configured SMTP server will *always* add those headers to *any* message.

    If you have administration over the SMTP server, you can with allot of tweaking configure the SMTP server to remove the headers after it was added if, for instance, the sender is httpdlocalhost. However, the next SMTP server that the message is forwarded to, will just add them again in anycase.

    I have a client that is looking to generate unlock codes for a cd and has given me a calculation that is new to me. There are a number of numbers associated with each CD, i.e. CD id, CD serial #, hardware code. Based on the info entered, they've provided a calculation that can be used to generate an unlock code, ie. Example: ABCD-12AZ-RTG5-02GH-CSWZ-76TG.

    I was wondering if this is possible using PHP and where I might get more information on such a topic.

    Here are two parts to the calculation;

    (4) The serial # of the CD (6 digits) is converted to the 20 bits binary code.

    This looks like it should be simple using decbin();

    Here's another part;

    (11) The 112 bits are divided by 8 bits, then there are 14 bytes. These 14 bytes is calculated by EX-OR. Then the result is added to the last, and the total data becomes 120 bit.

    Not too sure about dividing bits and EX-OR. Where could I get more information about doing something like this.

    Once again, I'm not sure if this is possible using PHP and any other additional information would be greatly appreciate. Also let me know if the entire calculation would help.

    Thanks, Tom

    (4) The serial # of the CD (6 digits) is converted to the 20 bits binary code.

    This looks like it should be simple using decbin();

    Here's another part;

    Thanks, Tom

    Hi Brian...

    I have it set up just like Robert, and I really think it's the way to go - having Apache as the web-accessible server gives me much more peace of mind than having IIS sitting out there just waiting to be attacked.

    Do you realize you can have content served by IIS accessed without using the :8080 (or whatever) port number? I'm not sure if you're aware of this but here's the relevant parts of my httpd.conf:

    NameVirtualHost * LoadModule proxy_module modules/mod_proxy.so LoadModule proxy_connect_module modules/mod_proxy_connect.so LoadModule proxy_http_module modules/mod_proxy_http.so

    <VirtualHost *> ServerName zevi.net ServerAlias zevi.net www.zevi.net ProxyRequests Off ProxyPass / http://zevi.net:4040/ ProxyPassReverse / http://zevi.net:4040/ </VirtualHost>

    <VirtualHost *> ServerName newworkstudio.com ServerAlias newworkstudio.com www.newworkstudio.com DocumentRoot "C:/htdocs/newworkstudio.com" DirectoryIndex index.html </VirtualHost>

    So, for each ASP site (or for each site served by IIS), just add a VirtualHost entry using the ProxyPass directive to send it to the IIS server. The IIS server doesn't have to be on the same computer by the way - or even the same network...

    Hope that helps.

    If there were any holes in PHP itself, they'd get fixed quickly and a security updated would be released, rendering your research obsolete. This isn't Microsoft we're talking about.

    If you mean common programming errors that PHP developers tend to make, well, I'd say search the web - there are many, many sites about this topic.

    #1. Improper Installation. Solution: Don't do that.

    #2. Invalid Assumptions. Solution: Don't do that.

    #1000: Not upgrading for the one (1) security flaw identified in PHP Solution: Upgrade.

    You may want to start with the Zend sites' Top 21 mistakes of PHP Developers, and also search the Mailing List archives for "Security".

    There is tons of info, but separating fact from fiction and understanding all the ramifications and finer points will take you quite a lot of research.

    So do I.

    I just love it when Windoze update tells me "You can only download XXX upgrade separately from other components ...... After installation [after rebooting several times], you can return to Windoze update to download additional components ..."

    I just don't understand why Redhat allows you to download and install all the upgrades in one step without giving you the chance to reboot the computer in between.

    It seems someone has some catching up to do :)

    Hello,

    Considering all of this... Would it be better simply to turn register_globals = On if the vast majority of the stuff you have on your site is simple search engine type stuff and/or GET variables?

    Considering the fact that anyone can forge GET, POST, & cookies, is there really any purpose in turning register_globals = Off ??

    Patrick

    attached mail follows:

    I'm not sure if it's true or not, but someone said all data coming through _POST and _COOKIES is filtered - making it safer than pulling the raw data from variables.

    While you're forging cookies, I'll take a few chocolate chip ;)

    Filtered? Nothing is filtered. Only you know what data the users should be sending, validate accordingly and assume all request data is unsafe. The only "filter" I see here is how the data is seperated by type, ex. only GET is in $_GET.

    Your problem might be that you use $user here, where everywhere else you seem to think it is called $username.

    > mysql_select_db("$db", $aDBLink); > $aSQL="select * from administracija where > administracija_username=$username"; > $aQResult=mysql_query($aSQL, $aDBLink);

    You can also make a call to mysql_error() here, because MySQL is probably ready to tell you why your query did not execute correctly.

    > > $broj= mysql_num_rows($aQResult); > P.S. I tried to send this message to General mailing list, but i could > not. I am subscribed!

    You should really try to figure out why you can't post to php-general. I receive nearly 1000 messages a day and cannot be relied upon to reply to every one. Also, others may benefit from your question and the fact that it is archived on the list, and it is always better to get a few different perspectives on a particular problem.

    Luckily no. :-)

    There are vulnerabilities in IE 4.0 - 6.0 that will let you read/write cookies not in your domain, but this is a result of a bug in IE and not ordinary behavior.

    >Hey, but all those stupid "Banner Ad" sites give me a cookie from the >*other* guy's site. > >All ya gotta do is have three invisible GIFs on all three sites that come >from the *other* sites and the GIF does the set_cookie() of whatever their >user ID is. >

    I'm not sure where you got this idea, but you should investigate further. A banner ad is usually nothing more than an image, and your browser will make a complete separate HTTP GET request for that image. When that is the case, there is no way the remote site can read or write cookies outside of its own domain. They can set cookies from their own domain, and you might see the cookies warnings on the same "page" or whatever, but the domains will definitely be different.

    Happy hacking.

    You can't have the IMG tag and the actual image output in the same script.

    Put the IMG tag into an HTML file, and the image output into a JPEG file.

    The JPEG file can't output *anything* except headers and image data.

    Speaking of headers:

    > imagejpeg($dst_img, '', 50);//sends the image to the browser

    Right *BEFORE* this line, you need to do:

    header("Content-type: image/jpeg");

    Otherwise, the browser doesn't know it's a JPEG and has to guess. It might guess right. It might not.

    Is 'track_vars' turned *ON* in php.ini? That's the one that fills in all those variables.

    If your version of PHP is "too old" you'll need $HTTP_POST_VARS instead of $_POST and similar.

    track_vars is always on for recent versions of php (4.0.3+).

    If it starts with yayo, only with umlats over it, almost for sure, yeah, that's the JPEG data. There will be JPEG/JFIF in the text shortly after that.

    If you are getting that, you know you are "close" :-)

    >Code is as follows: > > </tr> > <td><img alt="text" src="<?php echo CreateThumbnail(); ?>" >valign="top" /></td> > </tr>

    You can't just smush the image into the SRC=

    The SRC= needs to be a URL, and that URL needs to spew out the image.

    In other words, that URL needs to "fake out" the browser into thinking it really is just a static image.

    <SRC=createThumbnail.php>

    Then just put all the stuff below into createThumbnail.php

    If there was no php.ini, then blame whomever installed PHP :-)

    You can download a php.ini and put it where-ever <?php phpinfo();?> thinks it should be, and it will work just fine.

    Sorry I can't help much with the actual iso-8859-1 part -- I'm woefully ignorant of charsets.

    How slow?

    There's, like, a couple seconds slow, which is just how slow reverse-DNS can be, and *MINUTES* slow...

    Minutes slow, most likely, indicates that where-ever you are trying to look up the DNS records is trying to do a reverse DNS on *YOU* (or, rather, PHP's web-server) and timing out.

    If you have any control over that machine where you are doing the reverse-DNS, be sure they have your IP address associated with a name.

    For DSL, you can use something like http://dyndns.org to give your dynamic IP address a domain name. There are dozens of competitors to http://dyndns.org, and feel free to shop around.

    >I thought the best >way to speed things up would be putting the entire script into a file and >then using <img src="stats.php"> within the page. The problem is that I >don't know how to output the image with PHP.

    Like, I don't even understand the theory here...

    How would the script being in a file (and where is it now?) make the DNS lookups any faster? I'm so confused.

    At any rate, a sample of how to dump out an image was already posted in this thread.

    I went there and got no cookies.

    You have to call session_start() if you want the cookies to go out.

    You also have to session_register() each variable that you want to "keep" in the session.

    Hi, I am trying to import some tables from a dump file into a MySQL database from a php web page. What is the best way to do this without using backticks (fpassthru, system, exec or something else) and test for success or failure? I tried the following and while it works, my test for success or failure always produces a "Success" even when I change something to make it fail. I thought system() outputs the last line of the command on success and FALSE on failure. Any examples appreciated.

    <?php

    $status = system("mysql -umyuserid -pmypassword mydbname < /path/to/mydumpfile.txt");

    if($status == 'FALSE'){ echo 'Failed'; } else { echo 'Success'; }

    Thanks for pointing out the syntax error. I added the space after the -u but it did not make any difference. It still gives the same result, that is "Success", when it actually fails. What I am trying to figure out is how I can tell if it failed (did not create the tables)? The $status variable does not appear to hold the output of the system() function. Anyone know how to get the output of system, passthru or exec into the $status variable to check for success or failure?

    Your test for failure should be:

    Nope. In order for the password to be considered a password, there should be no space between the -p and the password. Otherwise it gets interpreted as the name of the database you want to access.

    I'm working on this site that is all shtml files... in order to add some dynamic content, it just includes php scripts in different places. However, sessions don't work unless you start it before outputting anything to the server and that's what's needed now...

    I don't want to change all the links to end in .php and do the includes in php just so I can put <? session_start(); ?> at the beginning of all the pages.

    So I was trying to get the server to treat shtml files as both server-parsed and as php scripts. Not working too well. ;)

    We'd need to know more about your setup, but if you're using Apache, you should be able to edit your httpd.conf file to include a PHP handler for files ending in .shtml. Just look for the directive for files ending in .php and add the same thing for .shtml. Then, both will be parsed by PHP first.

    Of course, by doing so you eliminate the purpose of the .shtml extension, which is supposed to indicate static content. I'm not sure if that concerns you.

    Hi All,

    Just wondering if some can explain this to me.

    Lets assume I ahve retrieved a person entry from an LDAP server. It contains uid, and cn with 2 values.

    I would expect the object when assign to $entry to look like.

    $entry['uid'][0] = "Jsmith" $entry['cn'][0] = "john smith" $entry['cn'][1] = "john doe"

    But if I run a each loop over the return object I find I get something like:

    $entry['uid'[0] = "Jsmith" $entry[0] = 'uid' $entry[cn][0] = "john smith" $entry[cn][1] = "John Doe" $entry[1] = 'cn"

    My point here is that the array being returned is not a true representation of the data on the LDAP server, and has extra values that are. not really needed, and should probably only be returned when they are requested.

    Is there anyway to get a array withonly the ldap data, i.e. no extra info?

    Thanks,

    Stewart

    Hello,

    For some reason the following line is not behaving

    $os = eregi_replace( "Win[^dows]", "Windows ", $os );

    this should take any form of Win9x (or WinNT, or Win2k, etc) & convert it so it shows Windows 9x (or Windows NT, or... you get the picture). After running "Win98" through the above eregi_replace I end up with "Windows 8". Same problem with any of the other strings.

    What's my problem??

    I'm pretty sure (I'm not a regular expression expert) this matches "a string that begins with Win followed by a character that is not d, o, w, or s.

    Thus, in the case of Win98, it replaces "Win9" with "Windows " and leaves the 8 alone.

    Happy hacking.

    Exactly.

    To get the behavior I think you want, do this:

    $os = eregi_replace('(Windows|Win)', 'Windows ', $os);

    The order of the pattern matches "Windows" before "Win" so if the input is "Windows" you won't wind up with "Win Windows"

    In a weak attempt at improving my knowledge of regular expressions, I came up with a less elegant solution than Dan's. :-)

    $os=eregi_replace("Win([^0-9NT]*)", "Windows \1" $os);

    This adds some additional handy replacements, such as:

    Winblows98 -> Windows 98 Windoze98 -> Windows 98

    It's a decent (well, so maybe not) example of using a replacement string, which I've always thought was neat.

    Happy hacking.

    Glory!

    Im creating a .php file that will be uploading & putting in data from a .csv file into mySQL Tables on the server. However, my problem is that if there is any kind of a problem during the transaction, i.e, system shut down, electricity problem, or any reason why the transaction is interrupted, i would like the transaction to roll back.. that is, all the records entered before the interruption SHOULD NOT remain in the database, they should get deleted or something, so that the transaction can begin Fresh from next time.

    How can i make such a function that will see this happens, in my PHP/mySQL.

    Thanks, T. Edison Jr.

    What about uploading the new data to a temporary table... once you're assured that every thing was completed, you can delete the old and rename the new to suit...

    Simular thing could be done with copying the existing table, etc.

    Well be sure that your MySQL supports transactions. InnoDB or something. In perl it's just a case of eval {sql here} if($ ) {rollback}else commit, the $ is empty unless the eval created an error. Now, let me see how PHP does this, Google, where are you?

    http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&q=mysql+php+rollback

    Might want to be sure your MySQL supports transactions and is configure appropriately or you can drive yourself nuts.

    http://www.mysql.com/doc/I/n/InnoDB_transaction_model.html

    And then some ideas about how to do it with PHP:

    http://www.php.net/manual/en/ref.mysql.php

    (wow, right from php.net)

    http://hotwired.lycos.com/webmonkey/02/11/index4a_page3.html?tw=backend

    I've never used mysql for anything but a data store so I have no examples myself.

    Glory,

    I use phpMyAdmin which enables me to take dump of mySQL Table Data into Comma Seperated Values file (.csv)

    Now, i have to create such a program that accomplishes this, without using phpMyAdmin. Can someone guide me to this procedure..

    Thanks, T. Edison Jr.

    Something like :

    <input type="submit" name="go" onSubmit=wow();>

    Wherein wow() defines a the window.open function?

    > and also attach the form values to the url. How do i do this? Because the 3 or 4 form fields i have, which are Hidden Fields, contain values coming in from $myrow[stuff], that is, coming in from a Database Table. How do i define these values up in the Javascript function in the <head> of the file?

    Hello,

    I want to add a set of values to the session variable $BOOKS. This is the code which I used.

    if($BOOKS=="") { #this seems to be the first book which the user has selected $BOOKS = $bookid; #this param comes from the URL } else { $BOOKS = $BOOKS+","+$bookid; }

    Here the 'if..' part gets executed, and because of that I cannot add details of another book. I have initialised the session and added the registered the value "BOOKS" in the previous page.

    Thanks in advance, Sachin.
