I'm not sure about which bits do not work but one that I've spotted is the extra ";"! A common and frustrating bug, see below:
> IF (!$accion); {
should be
IF (!$accion) {
The ";" means that if not $accion then do "nothing". The brace after then only starts a scope which is always executed.

I did already put this . after the message. This is described in the spec, but I might have put it into the wrong spot?! What do u suggest to put it? What is utf7 encoding? Can you make an example?

What kind of server do you use? On Apache, you can specify session.gc_maxlifetime in an .htaccess file (provided that Apache allowes overrides). On IIS I don't know if there's a way...

I have PHP 4.2.2 with register_globals=off.
It seems like session vars stored in $_SESSION[] aren't visible to functions. For example, this won't work for me:
$status = user_access();
function user_access() { if ( isset($_SESSION['user']) ) { return 1; } else { return 0; } }
Result is that $status = 0 even though I know those session vars are set.
if ( isset($_SESSION['user']) ) { echo "Logged In"; } else { echo "Not Logged In"; }
Result for the above is "Logged In" even though I'm checking the same session var. My script does include session_start(); as well.
So, is there a way I access session vars stores in $_SESSION[] from a custom function? Thanks!

I want to include a parameterised URL in a php script. Something like
<?php
include "http://www.myprimary.com/form.php?persion\1
?>
where form.php might contain something like
<?php echo "<form><input type=hidden name=person value=$_GET['person']></form>"; ?>
Is this possible (in particular is it possible if the script is on a different machine)?
Is there some way to achieve this effect. I'm trying to keep things as modular as possible even to the extent that some modules live on different servers.
TIA

Yes, you can do that. But I wouldn't do it because it's 'tainting' php supplied variables. Once you do that, you won't really be sure if a variable was posted or supplied by your script. It's probably more important for the person who follows in your footsteps and modifies the scripts -- as they may assume it's posted from a form, and yet isn't. Could cause a lot of confusion, not for you, but for, perhaps, me. If you do it though, you might be nice to the next guy/gal and put a nice note at the top of the script saying you're doing it.

How long is a piece of string? Horses for courses. You pays your money and takes your choice.
Zope is based on Python and seems to be completely object oriented which may or may not be a good thing.
Because it is not as widely used as PHP there seems to be less support all round (fewer 3rd party code, less support for DBs, fewer libraries etc).
However because of it OO-ness the code is very reusable.

I just skimmed over the documentation and the tutorials on line and couldn't make heads or tails of it... I know a good deal of other languages, most bear similarities but from one of the coding examples I saw it looked weird... The tutorials available don't explain much which probably says something about the programming skill of the supposedly expert Zope coders...
The manner in which their official website is presented fails to generate any curiosity on my part... In the case of php upon hearing about it I visited the official website and learned a great from it...
The people at Zend have introduced some awesome features to PHP as have the first peeps who wrote it (They are definitely geniouses)...
I have no idea as to who developed Zope... So far since I started messing with Server Side Applications i have found PHP to be the most convinient Scriptor, as well as reasonably efficient... As for Zope???!!$#$# ...(Though I am not familiar with it - I don't think I ever will be either)

Check this page out: http://www.zope.org/WhatIsZope .. And click the links on that page too. I don't know much about it. But what I gather is that it's sort of like an open source "cold fusion" type application written in python. Not that it necissarily resembles cold fusion in any way, but that it's sort of a framework for building web applications. I don't know a whole lot about python either, but it looks really cool. I think python is probably a better general-purpose scripting language than php, similar to perl in that respect. But as far as building applications that are strictly for the web, is there anything as good as php? I would probably say no, but a lot of it is a matter of taste.

try nedit from nedit.org you can download the patterns from the site to do php syntax highlight..
I have combined it with cervisia from kde 3 and made it look smth like an IDE :) .. and I've been working 4-6 hours per day for about half an year with it with no problems.
I also have tried Quanta but it is too huge for nothing... but if you need syntax completion maybe you should take a look at it.

yeah.. and if you have 3-4 netscapes open and xmms for music, kmail for spams, mysql and apache locally you'll also have to buy a two GHertz Computer with only one of RAM ;) i have tried zend also, but on my Intel PIII 750 with 256RAM was not worth.

Try this: http://www.scintilla.org/
Scintilla is a free source code editing component. As well as features found in standard text editing components, Scintilla includes features especially useful when editing and debugging source code. These include support for syntax styling, error indicators, code completion and call tips. The selection margin can contain markers like those used in debuggers to indicate breakpoints and the current line. Styling choices are more open than with many editors, allowing the use of proportional fonts, bold and italics, multiple foreground and background colours and multiple fonts.

Last time I tried it (about a month ago) the syntax highlighting was atrocious. I've always favoured quanta over bluefish but Redhat 7.3 seriously broke quanta. That only leaves vim (nedit is good, but has problems integrating with the KDE clipboard which renders it impotent).

Something rarely mentioned in these discussions on "PHP Editors", is FTP capabilities. That's something that is absolutely critical for me. I maintain several websites on different web servers. As such, the ability to log in and remotely edit sites is invaluable. And no - downloading the entire site, editing it, and re-uploading it isn't an option.
Here's some Linux ones that satisfy this requirement:
1. Zend IDE: Nice, but $$$ is the big inhibiting factor. 2. Quanta: its implementation remains a bit buggy. Perhaps the next version will be better. 3. jEdit: the Windows version has a plugin to do FTP, so I would assume the Linux version does too.
Can anyone else add to the list of Linux-based FTP-enabled PHP-supporting editors?

I would have to say that Zend Studio is tops, and worth the money (if you got it). Lots of cool features that make coding easier like curly brace matching, f1 help to the manual, debugging, function parameters and types show as you type them (even user defined functions if the file is opened) etc.

I had problems compiling quanta on my redhat 7.1 box, I had to grab some cvs files to fix it (Don't remember which files.. Probably whichever ones had problems compiling - and the makefile). Quanta is a great program, it's basically a homesite clone for Linux.

Last time I tried it (about a month ago) the syntax highlighting was atrocious. I've always favoured quanta over bluefish but Redhat 7.3 seriously broke quanta. That only leaves vim (nedit is good, but has problems integrating with the KDE clipboard which renders it impotent).

I'm sure you can also use vim or jedit or Zend's mentioned earlier.

That probably means your error-reporting level has changed, since that warning has been around for some time (since at least 4.0.6 to my certain knowledge).
> > on this line: > OCIFetchInto ( $GLOBALS["oracle_statement"], &$row, OCI_NUM + > OCI_RETURN_NULLS ) > > if I can't use &$row anymore, what do I do? The warning says > that "future versions may not support this", so will this > function be fixed? Or will this function be dissappearing?
Simply remove the & -- in fact, you never needed it as the definition of the OCIFetchInto() function itself specifies that the second argument must be passed by reference. The description of OCIFetchInto() in the PHP manual as:
int OCIFetchInto ( int stmt, array & result [, int mode])
corresponds to a PHP function defined like this:
function OCIFetchInto ( stmt, &result, mode=OCI_NUM) { ... }
so the result parameter is *always* passed by reference, whether or not you put a reference in the call. This define-time call by reference is *not* deprecated, and indeed was recommended as the preferred way even before call-time pass by reference was deprecated.
Cheers!

Hello all,
I have got a doubt, Is there a way to pass a array from one from to another form while submition.
I have tried to do it, but in the second form I just get the string "ARRAY" I'am not able to get the expected result.
Please let me know if there is a way to do the above.
Thanks in adv,

The best/easiest way is to use serialize() and unserialize().
-- Jason Wong -> Gremlins Associates -> www.gremlins.com.hk Open Source Software Systems Integrators * Web Design & Hosting * Internet & Intranet Applications Development */* I've got all the money I'll ever need if I die by 4 o'clock. -- Henny Youngman */
attached mail follows:
this can be done through many ways:
1. serialization: serialize() the array and then send it as a string, deserialize it back in form2 2. join the arrays with a seperator and send as one string, and split it back in form2 3. use hidden fields with same name whose name is similar too: hiddenfield[] , and output something like: <input type='hiddenfield[]' value='array element0'> <input type='hiddenfield[]' value='array element1'> <input type='hiddenfield[]' value='array element2'> upon submition, form2 will receive an array called $hiddenfield with the correct values!
good luck, Elias

Use print_r($ret) to see why it's not working. Use array_search() or in_array() to make it work.

Hi again, I hope u can help me with this. I have to parse an html file and replace src attribute of an img. I'm using 'preg_match_all' but it seems i'm having problem with patterns. This is the part of code that should find the appropriate img src:
$preg='/<img(.*?)src=[\'|"]'.addcslashes($original,"/").'[\'|"](.*?)>/si'; if (preg_match_all($preg,$arrFile,$match)) { echo $match[1][0]; }
where $original contains the value of src that it should find. For expl, $original can be: ../../MyMCMSSite/images/pic1_abeoway.gif.
But the problem is it's not catching the right img src.
Hope u can help me. Thx a lot Alia

First off, if you're doing a search and replace, use preg_replace().
> having problem with patterns. This is the part of code that should find > the appropriate img src: > > $preg='/<img(.*?)src=[\'|"]'.addcslashes($original,"/").'[\'|"](.*?)>/si';
The "|" OR operator is not for use in "[]" character range blocks.
> where $original contains the value of src that it should find. For expl, > $original can be: ../../MyMCMSSite/images/pic1_abeoway.gif. > > But the problem is it's not catching the right img src.
I don't know why it's not working for you. A slightly tweaked version of that works for me... Do note, you weren't escaping the periods in your addcslashes() call.
<?php
$document = 'begin <img size="5" src="../../MyMCMSSite/images/pic1_abeoway.gif" height="3" /> end'; echo htmlspecialchars($document);
$original = '../../MyMCMSSite/images/pic1_abeoway.gif'; $original = addcslashes($original, '/.');
$preg = '/<img(.*?)src=[\'"]' . $original . '[\'"](.*?)>/si'; echo '<br />'; echo htmlspecialchars($preg);
$document = preg_replace($preg, ' REPLACED ', $document); echo '<br />'; echo htmlspecialchars($document);
?>
Enjoy,

If it's internal stuff to your application, you can write in a 777 directory (such as /tmp) and retrieve it from there. If you want to write in a specific directory, you can set up a cron job to copy the file from the 777 directory to wherever you please from time to time. I'm not aware of any direct solutions to the problem (which is good - otherwise this posting would be renamed to "Short Hacker's Guide to Arbitrarily Bypass Linux Permissions" and thankfully that's not available). So you'll basically have to find a workaround with maximum functionality and minimum risks involved.

Matt,
I wish you were my boss :) I love MySQL and would want to use it instead of db2 (seeing i could probably have had it working with php last week ;) ) but.... Somehow my boss loves to waste money on IBM products....... and then hires on people who don't know how to use them well (i.e. me!). My philosophy is: don't waste money on it, if you can use some open source -- for example he wanted to use IBM WAS (websphere application server) but, PHP will do everything we need to do, and is a lot easier to deal with than the bulky WAS.
Anyways.........
I had seen the IBM document that you referenced about connecting DB2 to PHP, in fact, it's the main document i used to start attempting to get PHP to work with DB2. The second doc you referenced from phpbuilder.net was definately a good find -- had a couple ideas that i hadn't tried (i.e. catalogging the db, running apache as db2inst1 [still trying to get that to work, db2inst1 doesn't have the priviledges that root has, and henceforth can't access all the files needed by apache])
Matt, thanks again for all your help!

Hi all, Is there an easy way to connect php to rainingdata db ? Where can i find documentation on this ? regards.
Rémy
attached mail follows:
I get the following errors when I run my script. It works fine with only 20 records, but at 100 I get errors.
"PHP has encountered an Access Violation at 00DA088E Warning: Unknown list entry type in request shutdown (2) in c:\www\htdocs\demos\ct.org\directory.php on line 0"
or
"PHP has encountered an Access Violation at 00DA088E "
Basically, I have a CSV file with about 3500 records (lines). I have a while statement that goes through the file line by line. I am using fgetcsv(). While on a line I also open another file and search for a matching field (CustomerID) and if it matches print the information on that line unless a field in that file is set to "1".
This was initially tried using a query since this data is in a database. That did not work. I exported the data into csv files. It worked in testing limiting the amount of records to be displayed to less than 30. I just tried it with limit set to 100 and that's when I got the problem.
Here is the code;

Hi,
I just noticed a little problem(?) while using databases.
Some time ago I wrote myself a little class that made it easier to handly my mysql-tasks. The class connected to a database and used a query like "use $database" to switch to the given database.
This worked without a problem just as in the command-line tool "mysql", today however I had a database called like "data-ba_se".
"use"ing it gave me a note "cannot use database data-ba_se" as result. However it worked in the command-line mysql and it works using mysql_select_db(). Login, Database and password were checked for typo's of course.
PHP is 4.1.2, default woody-package.
Any idea what can be the reason for this?

JUstin,
Thanks a lot... Hmm... I gues for the beginning I would go and process the purchases manually. Later on if the purchases increase, than I would opt for proccesing credit cards via the server. Can you please give me some details on this? I know php, have Apache on a Win2k machine.
Many thanks, gabi.

Your error message is complaining about line 2. Well, that right there is line 2. I bet you retyped the code for your email message. But, in your script, you had mistakenly left off a "(" as it says in the error message.
PS: May I suggest not putting sooooooo much vertical whitespace in your messages? The email you sent was hard to read.

Believe or not the code today works , without any change.
I guess is somethhhing related to browser cache., who probably was holding one old version.

Greetings.
I've had to reinstall linux/apache/php on my new laptop ... if i browse http://localhost, i'm told that i'm running apache-advancedExtranetServer/1.3.20 (mandrake linux/3mdk) mod_ssl/2.8.4 OpenSSL/0.9.6b PHP/4.0.6.
sounded as though i'd successfully recreated my server, yet when i try to browse my *.php files, i see the code, in its entirety ...
so, what have i done wrong? how can i fix this mess i've gotten myself into?

$connect = connect-to-db() or (alert("error") xor die());
or

It makes for much cleaner code than what I used to do:
$connect = connect-to-db() if (!$connect){ alert("Error"); return(false); }

Hi All,
Are there standard functions for removing multiple spaces (or even better limiting contiguous space to specified lengths)?
i.e
foo("Hello peeps, happy times",1) -> "Hello peeps, happy times" foo("Hello peeps, happy times",0) -> "Hellopeeps,happytimes" foo("Hello peeps, happy times",2) -> "Hello peeps, happy times" (notice single space between "," and "h")
Can I do it with reg exp?
TIA

If there was an HTTP request, then the HTTP_HOST will be set.
The only problem you can run into is if someone hits the site via the IP address, since you said you only have one. In that case, the HTTP_HOST will hold the IP address. So, decide now which scripts you want to use in that case.
Even better, set up two options in your logic: if domain name 1, use script set 1 everything else, use script set 2

I was wondering if I could get alittle help in this issue. I have extinguished all other resources, with no avail to help. I am trying to get a directory listing for a dropdown list to choose for connection to a MySQL database for the correct image name to be printed into the database. I have the database part working perfectly as far as the printing the correct name from the directory list, although I am only being able to list the first file in each of the directories. Not the entire directory. This is in a .inc script running with two other scripts a .php script and another .inc script for the reference to the following. I was wondering if someone could give me some insight as to how I could resolve this issue to make the list actually appear like it is supposed to displaying everything in the list that has the extension '.jpg', '.JPG', '.gif', '.GIF', '.bmp', '.BMP', '.jpeg', '.JPEG'. Although, the only files I really need out of the directory are going to be '.JPG', '.jpg', '.GIF', '.gif', '.JPEG', '.jpeg'. some assistance would be greatly appreciated.. the following is the actual script as I have written it.

While this doesn't do exactly what your script does, it will point you in the right direction...
<?php
$DirHandle=opendir('.');
while ($FileName = readdir($DirHandle)) { switch ( substr($FileName, -4) ) { case '.jpg': case '.JPG': case 'jpeg': case 'JPEG': case '.gif': case '.GIF': $FileList[] = $FileName; break; } }
# Sort the list alphabetically: asort($FileList);
echo '<ul>'; while (list(,$Name) = each($FileList) ) { echo "<li><a href=\"$Name\">$Name</a></li>\n"; } echo '</ul>';

Hi.. I have found a strange problem. I try to use php output buffering, but I found this problem. Working with small amount of data everything is fine. But If I set example script like this:
<?
function callback($buffer) { return do_something_with($buffer); }
ob_start("callback") . .
do_something_that_produce_big_output() // more than 1.5 MB . . . ob_end_flush();
?>
Everything works fine when $buffer < approx 1.5 Mb, but if the size of the output, that need to be bufered exceeded some strange limit aprox 1593400 bytes, buffer is cut to that length and rest of the output is lost(!). I look in docs and manuals, but found nothing about it. Is it posssible to set large size for the output buffering operations or this strange limit is hard coded and cant be exceeded ??? I try to play with PHP.INI or add swapspace and DIMs memory with no effect..... Please help.

Probably a quote problem, or you are adding a ; at the end. The mysql_error() output after the failed query would tell you exactly. Much easier than asking here.

I'm not a JSP programmer so don't quote me but... A) The syntax isn't really that similar to Java. In Java, EVERYTHING is an object. You could write PHP like that if you wanted to but most people don't, especially those who are working with MySQL, for example. PHP is really a cross between C and Perl, syntax-wise. B) Yeah, you'd find JSP's to be faster. You misunderstand what they are. JSP stands for "java server pages" and they are processed server-side like PHP. No Java is interpreted by the browser. PHP is better suited for smaller applications and/or inexperienced programmers - not to say that it isn't powerful, but how many huge dot-coms wrote their sites in PHP?

You are mixing up some things here. JSP is server-side Java, applets are client-side. The two have very little to do with each other. You can use PHP and still send a Java applet to the browser, for example.
But if you are asking if doing client-side graphics with a java applet is faster or slower than doing server-side graphics with PHP, then I'd say the PHP version is likely yo always be faster as there is no applet loading overhead, and additionally one must assume that your web server machine is beefier than the client machines out there. But you are really comparing very different things here.
