oh, easy. we just skipped the whole bad flash idea.
I'm on linux/ppc and flash doesn't even work here, how many other ppl do you
not want to visit your page?

so... I also got three other boxes running, but those on x86 arch instead.
Noone cares about the dist.
The difference lies in the architecture. Don't assume everyone got the same
equipment you got.
And sorry to say, flash is horseshit, just look at youre cpu usage. I play two
xvid encoded movies the same cpu overhead (with libavcodec). Ey skip the
flash, put out a high resolution movie instead, you just need a better uplink
for that.
Oh just to convince you, you read online newspapers?
open some of those windows... nah you don't need many, I usually tab, say 5 -
10. Then come back and say, this is some tool I got right here.

I never use Flash for anything functional.
It can be a nice enhancement or visual aid, but never reply on it to
do anything -- especially a menu. Instead, use css or css with php.

Since the issue is that a page reload forces the movie to start over, i can see three options...
1. use frames (not recommended for a variety of reasons, but the top frame w/ your menu won't need to reload and keeps its place)
2. get into ajax and try not to reload the entire page that often
3. pass a variable into the movie each time the page loads, so that it knows what frame its on, kinda like a counter or placemarker to keep the continuity correct.

Um. Palm OS Garnet (what every remotely modern Treo runs) is completely
incapable of running multiple simultaneous processes without hacking the OS
beyond recognition. It is an absolutely horrid concept for a server, if it
were even possible to port Apache, MySQL, and PHP to Palm OS (which in no way
resembles Unix, Linux, Windows, or anything even remotely Posix). I don't
know if anyone has successfully managed to port Linux to a modern Treo, but
even if they had it would be just to prove that they can, not because it
would be actually usable.
Seriously, don't even waste time thinking about making a Palm device into a
dev server. There are some mobile devices you can do that to; this ain't one
of them.
(Disclaimer: I currently own and use a Treo 680, and used to work as an IT
journalist reviewing, among other things, Palm handhelds and smartphones.
That was a few years ago, but I've not heard anything to suggest that
anything has even remotely changed in this regard. In fact, everything I
hear is lamenting that it hasn't. <g>)

Hi all,
Design patterns are really hot today.
And I am really interested when and how often they are used.
It is said that 99% of the projects don't need them.
Any opinion appreciated.

First you need to know of them, and understand them to determine if
they're applicable. Sure, short one-off scripts probably won't benefit
much, but longer endeavours almost certainly will.

Design patterns???
Does that answer your question?
Design patterns are for the really smart people. Us dumber ones never
more up to management and thus stay in the trenches programming.
Maybe that's the reason why 99% of projects don't use them -- but, I
don't know for sure, I'm not that smart. :-)

Design patterns are used to solve common problems to in OOP programming.
If you use OOP, chances are you have used a design pattern without even
being aware of it.

Thinking about this a little, you still don't need mod_rewrite.
"rental" could be a PHP script, forced through PHP with:
<Files rental>
ForceType application/x-httpd-php
</Files>
In either a .htaccess file or, if performance is an absolute necessity,
your httpd.conf file (ie .htaccess files are turned off). In your rental
PHP script you simply look at the REQUEST_URI $_SERVER variable to
determine the correct data to show.
You could also forego the <Files> bit if you're willing to accept URLs
like this:
/rental.php/property/23425

I'm sorry, but the concept of God himself evaluates to the same infinite
regression as the concept of existence. The question should be "What is
existence?", not "Is there a God?". For surely if a God exists, then
from whence does it exist.
> Take the other side of that coin -- if God didn't exist, would we be

We would still be asking from whence do we exist. God is merely a hocus
pocus answer to the question. Why delve when you can wave your hands in
the air and say "God".
> I imagine there are a great number of things that don't exist
> that we never mention -- so why this one?
It is in our nature. We see the things that we create and naturally in
our ignorance many assume that we ourselves must have been created. This
may be true, but it still begs the question of the existence of our
creator. Let's look at it this way... if we create Artificial
Intelligence (aside: remember the discussion about randomness... are we
Artificial Intelligence or somehow more real? >:), but we never allowed
it to know of us directly... would we be it's God? Certainly it would
the same in all comparative understandings for which we hold our concept
of God. As such, would we look no further and say that there can be no
God but we? Do we consider higher up the chain and ask if we are Gods to
our AI, is our concept of God held servant to another higher God (and so
on up the regression)? Or do we just skip the whole idea of God and dig
at the real question... existence (which incidentally parallels the
problems of God with respect to the root of existence).

Ok, so we'll wave our hands and say "It is in our nature". I don't
see much of a proof either way.
Faith is one of those "begging the question" concepts. If you knew,
then it wouldn't be called faith.

I never offered proof... I offered argument :)

If you knew it would probably be called bullshit. That's ok, I have
complete faith that many millions more people will die in the name of
religion. I have faith it will be one of the most inhibitory aspects to
mankind's progress. I certainly have faith-- but I have no religion.

Well because this one bilks money from people who usually can't afford
to be giving it in the first place. It has over-reaching influence

That's my viewpoint to some extent, as long as it's not harming me then fine.
But the truth is it is harming all of us. Do we really want our
children taught about a magical sky-god who insists on genital
mutilation at birth? Do we want influences into our governments that
inhibit natural advances in modern science? Do you really believe in
virgin birth and resurrection?

I have a shiny new Intel processor. It has billions of transistors on
it, billions per square inch in fact, and they're all good
transistors, not some half-baked capacitors or diodes or other ilk.
The same arguments can be made with hard drives and ram. Having the
capacity to create a lot of something in an orderly fashion does not
prove existence.

Good, now I know who to blame when a tornado takes out a trailer park
in the southern bible belt.

I love what Steven Weinberg, the Nobel Prize-winning physicist said,
"Religion is an insult to human dignity. With or without it, you'd
have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things.
But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion."

Of course it does -- to me. But, that's the point. We all have our
own thresholds for belief.
For us to criticize each other for our beliefs would serve no purpose
other than to exhibit intolerance. And, I think we can all agree that
intolerance should not be tolerated.

Yeah, but that's the Bible -- don't beat God to death with it. He may
not have written it. In fact, in a global sense, He has supposed to
have written many books -- are they all His? If so, then that only
raises more questions. I think things get complicated when you get
man into the mix.

I love the book written by Carl Sagan the "The Dragons of Eden" -- he
has an interesting perspective on the God thing and it contains more
substance than a cute quote.

I believe it was Thomas Jefferson who said, "Ridicule is the only
weapon which can be used against unintelligible propositions."

Well as long as we're quoting famous old fence-sitting agnostics, lets
not forget Sagan's best:
'If by "God" one means the set of physical laws that govern the
universe, then clearly there is such a God. This God is emotionally
unsatisfying... it does not make much sense to pray to the law of
gravity.'

Hello all
I got "glibc detected" errors about several php extensions on my debian
box both by executing php-cgi or php-cli.
Config:
# cat /proc/version
Linux version 2.6.24-rc7-vs2.2.0.5.0.7 (root
etch) (gcc version 4.1.2
20061115 (prerelease) (Debian 4.1.1-21)) #2 SMP
# gcc --version
gcc (GCC) 4.1.2 20061115 (prerelease) (Debian 4.1.1-21)
# dpkg -l libc6
libc6 2.3.6.ds1-13etch5
I'm running on debian-etch stable/backports.
I build php-5.2.5 with this configure line:
./configure --enable-bcmath --enable-calendar --enable-exif
--enable-ftp --enable-shmop --enable-soap --enable-sockets
--enable-sysvmsg --enable-sysvsem --enable-sysvshm
--enable-memory-limit --enable-wddx --enable-fastcgi --enable-dio

--with-gmp=shared,/usr --with-gettext=shared,/usr
--with-mysql=shared,/usr --with-pdo-mysql=shared,/usr
--with-mysqli=shared --with-gd=shared --with-jpeg-dir=/usr
--with-png-dir=/usr --with-zlib --with-zlib-dir=/usr

--enable-filepro --enable-sqlite-utf8 --with-mcrypt=shared,/usr
--with-pspell=shared,/usr --with-unixODBC=shared,/usr
The errors occurs when i want to activate several shared extensions:
pgsql, snmp, mcrypt.
I'm really confused because if i build these extensions statically all
works fine ( ./configure ..blabla... --with-pgsql ... --with-mcrypt )
I've a little script script to test pgsql connection :
<?
$dbconn = pg_connect("host=192.168.0.230 port=5432 user=demo
password=demo dbname=demo");
$query = pg_exec ($dbconn, "SELECT * FROM agenda");
....
?>
If i call this script via a web browser i got in apache log:
[Fri Feb 22 21:40:30 2008] [error] [client 192.168.0.22] *** glibc
detected *** free(): invalid pointer: 0xb6b3f880 ***
[Fri Feb 22 21:40:30 2008] [error] [client 192.168.0.22] Premature end
of script headers: listepg.php
If i call this script on command line, same error:
etch:/web/clients/client1/www# php -c ../php.ini listepg.php
connexion*** glibc detected *** free(): invalid pointer: 0xb48b8280 ***
Abandon
I'm knocking my head on the walls since several months about this issue
which i didn't meet with previous versions of php (i compile myself
since php-5.0.0RC1). All was working fine until i upgrade to php-5.2.x.
More strange: i've installed php-xxx.deb from dotdeb packages (added in
my sources.list) where these extensions are shared and in this case all
works fine. I've asked dotdeb developper what may cause this issue on my
box but he couldn't spent many time to debug my problem.
In doubt, i've reinstalled all libxxxx-dev invoked by configure script
but always same error. I've tried on 2 others machines with same distro
and i got same error, too.
I think i make a mistake during php configuration but can't find where.
Any help/idea please ...
If you need more info, i can provide them
Thanks

From witch pool?
5.2 is in lenny and so is the dependencies.
I don't know if you compile because you miss a feature, or simply because of
the version.
If you compile for the version just install from lenny,
if you compile for features, install required dependencies.
Oh wait, it compiled fine? and it just don't work afterwards?
You tried from testing pool? does it work there, if the maintainer can't help
you seems like a compile flaw for some reason.

Hello
download the php-xxx.diff.gz from dotdeb source repo and see if there
any differences in the debian/rules file from this diff to your
configure options. The debian/control file has listed all the
dependencies for build the php-xxx.deb packages. See also in this file
for mistakes in your environment.
Greetings
Mario

Just get the number from mysql_num_rows($resultado). It will return
the number of rows returned by the query and you can use it anywhere
as long as $resultado is a valid resource.

Kista:
No way would I write a shopping cart. I might steal one and rewrite
for myself, but even then it would take me more than a week.
You might want to check out some commercial shopping carts and
present them to your client. At least they usually have support to
help you install. I think that would be the way I would take -- I
have done that before.
Try not to be the guru here, but rather the person who can guide your
client to get what they want -- if you know what I mean.
Good luck,
tedd

Tedd - the world is not limited to PHP contractors. Think about people
writing products that they sell.
Also, it's usually not the code that matter as such, it's the algorithm
or the method.

How about Acrobat Reader or ATI graphics drivers? There's plenty of
closed source products about on Linux.

If you've got a competitive edge, you don't want to hand it to your
competition free of charge. It's as easy as that.

My competitive edge is my own skill and knowledge and time efficiency. I get
paid quite well to give it away to my clients.

I don't see a question here... what exactly are you trying to do and how does it relate to PHP?
Last time I heard, COBOL was best for working with cinnamon and supercritical carbon dioxide extract.
