Maybe I'm living in a cave, but I certainly never encountered these
problems with either Sendmail or Postfix. While in your case the -f
would probably work just fine, I instead configured pgnus to talk
SMTP directly to the mail server, so I know without a doubt what the
envelope sender is. I think the latest PINE with its roles support
does a sendmail -bs so that it talks SMTP, but to the sendmail
command. It's been a while since I fiddled with that so I could be
wrong.

The only way you're really going to know is if you give Postfix a try.
