Aaah... <light dawns> I'd gotten used to the dates being the release numbers,
before the 19990906+patches convention (which I'm guessing came about due to
the experimental/official split).

I hesitate to suggest more documentation, but perhaps the steps you've been
outlining to me in this thread could be added to the DEBUG_README document?
