using a patched imap/pop like http://www.inter7.com/courierimap/
and vpopmail http://www.inter7.com/vchkpw/ -- or -- through
an already pathced for SQL qpopper

the format is somewhat different from normal nsswitch's db, but
it works in a very similar way
(in my case I'll have scripts creating userb on the fly directly from SQL)

sorry, for what I read from Malcom on Server-linux he talked about
a complete setup. nice to now it works fine with postfix.
