Design for Multi-Server Multi-Domain System

Hi,

I want to construct a back-end mail server for serving IMAP or POP mailboxes.
This is for things like outsourced e-mail.

The mailboxes would be in the thousands to tens of thousands, and must support
multiple domains, spread across different servers.

The only hard requirement is that it runs on PC hardware and on a Unix-like
system.

What I've found so far in the free software department is Courier IMAP, and
Cyrus IMAP. While apparently these can mix different domains in the same
box, I couldn't find out how it can distribute the mailboxes across different
servers.

Of course there should be a front-end MTA which routes the incoming mail to
the proper box; this would need some database to know who goes where.
Also, for the IMAP or POP retrieval, there must be a way for the user to
locate the server (through a proxy POP/IMAP? or by using DNS to point
username.imap.isp.net to the proper server?)

And, some sort of system to coordinate the creation of the mailboxes and
routing tables.

The only mail cluster I've seen so far grown on free software is the Oxford
University Herald system, and I believe that uses only one domain.

We could write our own code for this, and make it free... would anyone find it
useful?

Or failing all that, what commercial solutions are recommended.

Any thoughts?

Thanks!
