For one, it's currently required to get all the benefits from
Sieve. Apparently the envelope sender is only retained when deliver
is run in LMTP mode, and the envelope sender is required for the
vacation extension to Sieve.

LMTP is also required if you want a message to multiple recipients
to be hard linked to all those recipients (on the same Cyrus
partition). LMTP is also nice because it reports per-user delivery
status, rather than the entire message bombing. And if you have
several IMAP servers, you can use LMTP on some central machine to
pump the incoming mail directly into the message store on each IMAP
server, without having to run another mail queue on each box. We
have found this feature alone to be really nice.
