Indeed, from a GUI it handles really nicely.

1.6x can do this; I forget which specific rev. The new auth scheme
however, from reading it, looks like it's not going to be terribly FreeBSD
happy, since auth is now a lib instead of a server, and we don't want the
imap server itself to be setuid root. It's the biggest reason I'm still
running 1.5x.
1.6x does it's hashing differently that what you're asking (as well
as it's off-shoot Netscape Mail Server 4.x). They do a hash of the name
itself, generate hex numbers, and mostly-evently distribute the name
space. They have a custom tool where given a username, it will spit out
the path, for scripting purposes.
