I used postfix in the "early days" (12/97) when it was still called vmailer.
I don't remember however what version of the kernel I was using but it may
well have been 1.2.x.

You're best bet is probably to build it, and then if that succeeds attempt
to install it independently of your current MTA, as Wietse describes in the
notes, probably listening on another port.

If you get that far it may be well worth dropping us a note, just to know.

As far as I'm aware postfix runs on redhat's latest versions, back down to
5.x (i think I had it running on 4.x too), on Debian, and SuSE.
1.2.13 though is quite an old kernel these days.
