This is a tuning issue - Therefor you did not write about any changed
parameters.
Have a look at master.cf in the "smtp" line - Rise the maxproc number.
I am currently doing 250 delivery processes on a single 128MB P166 Machine
this is ok as most of the time the smtp process just blocks waiting
for network input etc.
Another thing is the "qmgr_message_recipient_limit" in the main.cf.
I also discovered that i get an statistical slowdown
if i open/start with too many concurent remote connections
(default/initial_destination_concurrency(_limit) as many mailers out dont
keep pace with postfix delivering multiple messages in parallel it seems.
