In the first semester of computer science I learned about spin wait times and
max. transfer rates. There are physical limits for HOW FAST a disk can
be.That particular IDE disk CANT be faster when it actually had to write
that data. It would have to write faster than it spins.

This implies some sort of cacheing/ansynchronous writing, which explains the
speedup.
