Add to that (2a) if the machine stays up but the sendmail daemon was killed
without being restarted, it make take awhile to notice that no one is
getting your mail. (This happened to me on my workstation at my last
job... needless to say, the admin got an earful after I figured that all my
outgoing mail for a week was sitting in a queue file).
