Subject: 8 to 7 bit conversions (confused and slightly off topic)

I am having problems receiving mail from one
person without getting it converted from 8 bit
to "quoted-unreadable".

He uses elm and sendmail 8.8.6 on the
origination machine. He also says that he
can send mail between machines on his network
without it getting converted, and that
postfix doesn't understand how to receive
8-bit mail which forces the sending machine
to convert.

Several hours of research have convinced me
otherwise. I can send mail from other places
to the destination machine, and it arrives 8
bit clean as advertised (even using sendmail
and elm).

Can someone explain what happens when an 8 bit
message arrives (in general)? Does anyone know
what might cause this (and more important, how
to stop it)? Thank you for your help.
