His sendmail sucks or one of the intermediate (check the Received:
headers in the mail you receive) is not 8-bit safe. It's suggested that
the sender updates to sendmail 8.10.0 (or 8.10.1 if he needs SMTP
AUTH).
Postfix can and will handle 8-bit mail. Postfix does not convert.
