or even postfix on linux, or postfix on pretty nearly anything.

sendmail's the killer in Jerry's setup, not linux.

an example: a mailing list with under 30,000 subscribers regularly
crashed the machine when it was running sendmail (originally a P-200
with 64MB running linux) due to the extreme load (we had further
complications because we were using smartlist which really doesn't
scale very well). switching to postfix cured that instantly, with no
other changes. the list is now over 60,000 subscribers and was, until
recently, still running on the same old hardware (the entire setup just
got moved to a PIII-450 with 256MB, and smartlist has finally been
replaced with listar)
