 That's a phony argument, at best. Show us some evidence. That said,
 I'm familiar enough with auto{conf|make} to understand that it's not
 everyone's first choice :)

 Nevertheless, I think that the current make system takes care of
 system dependencies well enough.

 I have thrown together a quick hack, relative to 19993112-pl06, which allows
 building outside the source dir. It is based on the bind-8 makefiles. Seems
 to work well, but I didn't try installing (as that requires root :)

 As I didn't want to post it here, and have no ftp site to put it on,
 would someone else want to make it available for web and ftp? Otherwise,
 I'll just email it out on request (14k; 2k as .gz).
