Subject: Amavis, Postfix and Performance (or not)

I finally went live with the twin postfix and AMaViS-perl set-up.

Unfortunately, after a while it went into melt down and I had
to back out.

The problem was the effect large messages had on the AMaViS perl
script. We have people here who receive plain text messages of
upto, say, 20MB. These are not attachments. They are genomic
sequences and associated stuff. The AmAvIs script seems happy
to grow upto 160 MB. With several of these running, I was getting
some swapping. It appears to me that most of the effort was in
unpacking the contents (MIME or not (as in this case)). The
virus checker (Sophos) could barely be seen running, i.e. it
was fast.
